Sunshine by Robin McKinley Pdf

A small-town baker uses her magic to confront a post–vampire apocalypse world in this award-winning fantasy Neil Gaiman called “pretty much perfect.” Although it had been mostly deserted since the Voodoo Wars, there hadn’t been any trouble out at the lake for years. Rae Seddon, nicknamed Sunshine, head baker at her family’s busy and popular café in downtown New Arcadia, needed a place to get away from all the noise and confusion—of the clientele and her family. Just for a few hours. Just to be able to hear herself think. She knew about the Others, of course. Everyone did. And several of her family’s best regular customers were from SOF—Special Other Forces—which had been created to deal with the threat and the danger of the Others. She drove out to her family’s old lakeside cabin and sat on the porch, swinging her feet and enjoying the silence and the silver moonlight on the water. She never heard them coming. Of course, you don’t when they’re vampires. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sookie Stackhouse will cheer for this tough and quirky heroine. In Sunshine, which won the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature, McKinley has a vampire novel that is “a smart, funny tale of suspense and romance” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Exploring Ecolinguistics by Douglas Mark Ponton Pdf

Contributing to the rapidly emerging field of ecolinguistics, this book explores the role of language in mediating and determining our relationship with nature and in shaping attitudes and social practices in environmental areas. In doing so, it maps out research pathways for informed ecological debate that concerns both the planet and the discipline. The book centres on two case studies. The first is a nature reserve near Siracusa in Sicily run by Fabio Cilea, where flamingos have begun to breed despite the devastation of the nearby coastline by one of the largest petro-chemical plants in Europe. The second is High Ash farm, a small farm near Norwich, UK. Farmer, Chris Skinner, is a passionate naturalist who for 30 years has presented a programme on BBC Radio Norfolk. Through analysing the discourse of both Skinner and Cilea, the book explores what it can reveal about the underlying environmental visions that sustain them. Together with the discourse of other engaged ecological figures, a picture emerges of the connections that exist between our beliefs/attitudes, language and the natural world. Presenting a framework for analysing environmental discourse from a primarily positivist standpoint, the book draws attention to the discourses that underline social practices felt to be useful, necessary and beneficial in these moments of environmental crisis. Although these contexts are European, the methodologies applied, as well as the ecological and linguistic issues dealt with, are universal, clarifying the relationship between social practices and language itself, viewed in the book as an ecosystem that is also in need of loving attention.

Kiss Me Before Dawn by Ava Bradley Pdf

My name is Mystic. I’m a private investigator-slash-bounty hunter in a world gone sick. Eight years ago, a swiftly moving parasitic virus turned eighty percent of the population into brain-dead, flesh-eating monsters. It was like any zombie movie you’ve ever seen, and then again, it wasn’t. With their food source threatened, vampires came out of the closet and established a shaky alliance with us surviving humans. Yeah right. Not in this lifetime, thank you very much. Before anyone ever knew vampires truly existed, I saw one murder my mother. I will never trust a vamp, let alone allow one to dine from my vein. Now my boss expects me to team up with one to find some lost kids who’ve been kidnapped by their money-extorting mother. Christophe is as hot as a cherry pie baked in August, but a vamp is a vamp. Still, I need the perks that come with the job. So shoot me, I accepted the assignment. A girl’s gotta eat. If I can only stick to the case without getting my jugular—or any other body parts—penetrated, I might come through this in one piece.
