The Triumph of the Cross (Classic Reprint) by Fra Girolamo Savonarola Pdf

Excerpt from The Triumph of the Cross Every syllable of this profession of Savonarola's faith in the supremacy of the successor is expunged There are no asterisks to show that words are left out. There is no footnote, no word in the Preface, to explain the uh pardonable liberty of the translator. A comma is put after the words loosed in heaven, and the translator continues, - as though this were the author's continua tion, -from which we may see that Jesus Christ, down to the words He shall sit and rule upon the throne of David, etc The entire passage about the successor of St. Peter, Hence it follows, is summarily omitted from what purports to be a translation. The Secret of Progress (Classic Reprint) by W. Cunningham Pdf

Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. The Problem of the Cross (Classic Reprint) by Vernon Faithful Storr Pdf

Excerpt from The Problem of the Cross Atonement in the scheme of Christian theology. I have tried in these lectures to indicate the form which I think our interpretation of the Cross will take. We shall make central the thought that God suffers with His universe. One of the most urgent needs for theology at this moment is to think out the relation between the twin concep tions of Transcendence and Immanence. The Cross of Christ. Certainly Wins a new significance when set against the background of the divine immanence. But the Cross was no defeat, but a triumph. That is the cardinal message of Christianity. Hence the conception of a God who suffers with His world must be shown to be compatible with the conception of a God who in suffering is transcendently Victorious other wise the Cross spells weakness instead of power. The Triumph of the Cross by Richard Viladesau Pdf

This is a sequel to Richard Viladesau's well-received study, The Beauty of the Cross: The Passion of Christ in Theology and the Arts from the Catacombs to the Eve of the Renaissance. It continues his project of presenting theological history by using art as both an independent religious or theological "text" and as a means of understanding the cultural context for academic theology. Viladesau argues that art and symbolism function as alternative strands of theological expression sometimes parallel to, sometimes interwoven with, and sometimes in tension with formal theological reflection on the meaning of crucifixion and its role in salvation history. This book examines the two great revolutionary movements that gave birth to the modern West: the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation. This period was eventful for both theology and art, and thus particularly fruitful for Viladesau's project. Using individual works of art, over sixty of which are reproduced in this book, to epitomize particular artistic and theological models, he explores the contours of each paradigm through the works of representative theologians as well as liturgical, poetic, artistic, and musical sources. To name a few examples, the theologies of Savonarola, Luther, Calvin, and the Council of Trent, are examined in correlation to the new situation of art in the era of Fra Angelico, Leonardo, Michelangelo, D?rer, Cranach, and the Mannerists. In this book, Viladesau continues to deepen our understanding of the foremost symbol of Christianity.

Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ...by men wifh the-gamp arHnnr nrf mnctanry that they have shown in following Him. This is the reason why Christians are so closely united together; f5f we see that they love Jesus Christ above all things. For His sake they likewise love each other, or wnatsoever race and country they may be; and the more their faith in Christ increases, the stronger grows their brotherly love. This could not be the case were their faith not true. For fallacy and error cause, not harmony, but discord. Again. The soul enjoys greater happiness in proportion as, by love and contemplation, it draws nearer to its last end. But the happiness enjoyed by Christians far surpasses all pleasures oi understanding and sense. This trtrttrts" proved byTKeTnvincible constancy of the martyrs, who went to death rejoicing and exulting; by the numberless monks and hermits who, relinquishing all things, and living in the practice of the greatest austerity, have yet enjoyed incomparable happiness; and by the numerous philosophers who have found such delight in the study of Holy Scripture, that, in order to devote themselves to it, they have abandoned every other branch of learning. Hence we see that the joy which souls find in Christ exceeds all other happiness. If, then, felicity be synonymous with proXllliily Ur our last end, Christ, in whom all happiness is found, must be the Last End of human life. In order to comprehend, collectively, all the properties of our Last End we reason thus. As all things of the same species tend naturally to the same end, be it proximate or ultimate, it follows that men, who are all of the same species, must be fitted for some one thing which is the common end of human life. Now, all men agree in professing that they tend towards a last end;...

History of the Cross of Christ (Classic Reprint) by William Rounseville Alger Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Cross of Christ The idea of this little book was suggested to the author by perusing cruciana, an interesting work, by John Holland, published in England in 1835. Some of the quotations, and some of the facts embodied in the followmg sketch, were derived from that source. But the plan, execution, uses of the present essay are, in most respects, so different from those of Mr. Hol land's volume, that no further acknowledgment or refer ence to his work seems to be required. The hope of the author in presenting this humble production to the public, is that it may awaken Christian feelings in those who read it, by showing how the Crossof Christ justly appeals to the reason, - t_he imagination, and the heart of a living'believer. Graciana is a collection of miscel laneous information and literature concerning the Cross. J usti Lipsi De Cruce, - a Latin book printed in 1598 is a literal account, with engravings, of the Cross, its various shapes, and its use as an instrument of torture in different countries and times. The present work gives the symbolic history of that now hallowed object - thelessons taught by its fortunes and uses. This field the writer believes to have been hitherto unoccupied; and it seemed to him so capable, that he trusts a sufficient apology will be found in what he has written, for pub lishing it.
