Older Widows and the Life Course by Pat Chambers Pdf

Later-life widowhood is the expectation of most older wives, since statistically women live longer than men and tend to marry men older than themselves. Despite this there has been little coverage of the complexities of later-life widowhood. In this book Pat Chambers redresses this balance, combining an analysis of the literature that does exist with qualitative research amongst older widows. The research reveals a multi-faceted experience of later-life widowhood. Older widows life stories challenge the dominant public narrative of misery and decline, pointing instead to a complexity of experience which is rooted in personal biography and the female life course rather than in later-life widowhood itself. Chambers develops the concept of multiple narratives as a way of uncovering the complex, but often hidden lives of older widows. Without such an understanding, she argues, it is all too easy to subscribe to the powerfully dominant public narrative and thus to misinterpret older widows current needs and aspirations. This is an engaging and original study of a key topic for gerontological research and will be of great interest to sociologists and social policy scholars who study ageing and the life course.

In Chappaqua, New York, two elderly widows who look like grandmothers with nothing more exciting on their daily agendas than mopping the kitchen floor, are not who they seem. Originally from Afghanistan and Palestine, the widows are hiding a secret of monumental proportions. From a back room in a small secondhand bookstore attached to their house, Mrs. Abramowitz and Mrs. Silverman control the Black Widows, a worldwide terrorist organization created with a dual purpose to destabilize the Western world and to wage a personal vendetta of their own. As soon as Zach Dayan an NYPD detective and former Israeli policeman takes the case, he faces a series of apparently random murders with identical wounds slashed in the victims' chests. Desperate for answers, he seeks help from his ex-lover and expert pathologist, Dr. Jayanti Joshi. After examining the hearts, Dr. Joshi quickly discovers the common thread of the murders. Unfortunately, the clue leads nowhere. Zach's search for the murderer leads him to the hidden caves of an impenetrable ancient desert city, where he is soon swept into the heart of an evil plot. Only time will tell if he can save the Western world from another Holocaust.

“The Widows kept me on the edge of my seat. Montgomery is a masterful storyteller.” —Lee Martin, author of Pulitzer Prize-Finalist The Bright Forever Inspired by the true story of Ohio’s first female sheriff, Jess Montgomery’s powerful, lyrical debut is the story of two women who take on murder and corruption at the heart of their community. Kinship, Ohio, 1924: When Lily Ross learns that her husband, Daniel, the town’s widely respected sheriff, has been killed while transporting a prisoner in an apparent accident, she vows to seek the truth about his death. Hours after his funeral, a stranger appears at her door. Marvena Whitcomb, a coal miner’s widow, is unaware that Daniel has died and begs to speak with him about her missing daughter. From miles away but worlds apart, Lily’s and Marvena’s lives collide as they realize that Daniel was perhaps not the man that either of them believed him to be. *BONUS CONTENT: This edition of The Widows includes a new introduction from the author and a discussion guide "The Widows is a gripping, beautifully written novel about two women avenging the murder of the man they both loved."—Hallie Ephron, New York Times bestselling author of You'll Never Know, Dear "Jess Montgomery's gorgeous writing can be just as dark and terrifying as a subterranean cave when the candle is snuffed out, but her prose can just as easily lead you to the surface for a gasp of air and a glimpse of blinding, beautiful sunlight. This is a powerful novel: a tale of loss, greed, and violence, and the story of two powerful women who refuse to stand down."—Wiley Cash, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Ballad, A Land More Kind than Home, and This Dark Road to Mercy "[A] flinty, heartfelt mystery that sings of hawks and history, of coal mines and the urgent fight for social justice."—Julia Keller, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Bone on Bone
