The Worker and His Work (Classic Reprint) by Stella S. Center Pdf

Excerpt from The Worker and His Work This book has been compiled in an effort to meet the needs of boys and girls who feel the urgent necessity of selecting the right vocation. Few subjects provoke so keen an interest as that of one's life work. The thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts. But there is danger in early selection and specialization before there is perspective. To be a vocational misfit is almost as tragic as to have no work at all. The Worker and His Church (Classic Reprint) by Eric M. North Pdf

Excerpt from The Worker and His Church Every Christian worker is interested in the church. He knows that it is due to the church more than to any other institution that he has come to know and to love Jesus Christ. He knows that the church is constantly working to bring the knowledge and love of God to men and to promote his kingdom throughout the world. He also knows that in it he often finds the very best place in which to do his own work for the advancement of the kingdom. He is himself a member of it. Because he is thus vitally con cerned with the life of the church, this little book has been written to help him to understand how the Christian church came to be and just how it has developed through the nineteen centuries of its history. Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive (Classic Reprint) by German Woodhead Pdf

Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? The Intermediate Worker and His Work (Classic Reprint) by Edward S. Lewis Pdf

Excerpt from The Intermediate Worker and His Work As education is becoming the dominant interest in society, religious education is coming to its own in the Church. Her Own children are at once her first responsibility and her only hope. She can not lose these and win anything. If she saves these she can save the world. The new life in the modern Sunday-school is the ex pression of this deepening conviction. We are coming to see that no sacrifice is too deep and no expense too great for the winning of our youth to Christ and building them up in Christ. Their responsiveness to skillful training is a moral wonder. With the decline of the feeling of hopeless ness engendered by an over - estimate of heredity, there has come into our work a new confidence based upon the teach ings of science as to the priority of environment. Oppen heim says, The human being, in the first part of his exist ence, is much more unformed than is generally thought. The determining factors are not as parents usually con sider them. He adds that the effects of heredity are not settled facts, but that the qualities of goodness and virtue are purely functional, the result of friction, social inter action, environment. This means that by supplying the right environing influences we may win and hold all the children we desire. The Worker and His Country (Classic Reprint) by Fabian Ware Pdf

Excerpt from The Worker and His Country My Dear, - I had intended to ask you to allow me to dedicate this book to you; I have decided, however, to preface it with an open letter addressed to you anonymously, without your permission. Let me explain the reasons which have led me to spare you this request. Finding myself unexpectedly enjoying a spell of absolute intellectual independence, after twenty-five years - or, to put it grandiloquently, a quarter of a century - of unconscious intellectual submission, my thoughts naturally turned to the contemplation of the whole system of wage-earning stretching out into the past behind me. I had tested it, in complete economic dependence, from somewhere very near the bottom to the top, and had discovered it to be pretty consistently rotten throughout. My own employers had been not a few, many others I had known intimately in their work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Workers by Walter A. Wyckoff Pdf

Excerpt from The Workers: An Experiment in Reality; The West That, at all events, is pretty much as it ap pears to-night to Tom Clark and me. Clark is my partner, and we are not in good luck nor in high spirits. We each had a ten-cent breakfast this morning, but neither has tasted food since, and to-night, after an exhausting search for work, we must sleep in the station-house. We are doing our best to pass the time in warmth and comfort until midnight. We know better than to go to the station-house earlier than that hour. Clark is in the corner at my side pretending to read a newspaper, but really trying to disguise the fact that he is asleep. The Senior Worker and His Work (Classic Reprint) by Edward S. Lewis Pdf

Excerpt from The Senior Worker and His Work The present Sunday - school awakening is the brightest and most hopeful Sign in the religious world. All the Churches are showing a new appreciation of the value of the child and an unwonted confidence in the Bible and its teachings. This has come none too soon. The Church can not hope to prosper as we long to have it unless it succeeds in holding more Of her young people than she is holding or has ever held. This is distinctly the pressing problem of all the Churches. The religious interests Of our own children are incomparably the Church's first responsibility and greatest work. We shall be discredited both at home and in the mission fields if we prove powerless to recruit our member ship in larger numbers from our own homes. The Senior Department of the Sunday-school exists mainly on paper. Even our best organized schools seldom have a Senior Department separately organized and worked. And yet it is important - indispensable - to successful work. TO what purpose do we win the younger scholars if we lose them in the senior years? On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire (Classic Reprint) by George Forrest Browne Pdf

Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Excerpt from The Adult Worker and His Work Is it not worth while to teach the Bible as well as we teach arithmetic and geography, to give as good instruction in the things of the soul and the life to come as in those of the counting house and commerce? - Burt0n and Mathews. The new system is the result Of developments that have been in process for many years in the educational world. The principles of the new education have been recognized and followed in the public schools for a good while; their recognition in the Sunday-school has come tardily, but can not be any longer postponed. The Management and the Worker (Classic Reprint) by George F. Johnson Pdf

Excerpt from The Management and the Worker There are scores of successful plans in this volume, all of which have a direct bearing upon conditions in every concern where the so-called labor problem exists. In some of these organizations the application of many of these plans and methods may be readily made without readjustments, while in others varia tions may be necessary or advisable in order to meet varying conditions. It will be found that as often as is consistent with adequate presentation of the subjects, plans are de scribed by the users themselves. The names of those who have given special assistance are mentioned on an earlier page. The editors of the volumes have gone to successful managers for their successful poli cies and plans, and it is believed that nowhere is there to be found in equal space an equal body of evidence that management can cope successfully, and with extraordinary results in profits, with what is commonly known as the labor problem.
