Theory of Single and Multiple Interfaces by Federico Garcia-Moliner,V¡ctor R. Velasco Pdf

Based on a scattering theoretic approach which effectively constitutes an extension of the Dyson or Lippman-Schwinger theories, Green functions constitute the backbone of a matching analysis. This analysis is applied to a wide range of models, materials and physical problems, from electronic structure of semiconductor superlattices or phonons in metal superlattices to surface Brillouin scattering, piezoelectric surface waves or interface waves in viscoelastic fluids.

Introduction to Surface and Superlattice Excitations by Michael G. Cottam,D.R. Tilley Pdf

Cottam and Tilley provide an introduction to the properties of wave-like excitations associated with surfaces and interfaces. The emphasis is on acoustic, optic and magnetic excitations, and apart from one section on liquid surfaces, the text concentrates on solids. The important topic of superlattices is also discussed, in which the different kinds of excitation are considered from a unified point of view. Throughout the book, the authors are careful to relate theory and experiment and all of the most important experimental techniques are described. The theoretical treatment assumes only a knowledge of undergraduate physics, except for Green function methods that are used in a few sections; these methods are developed in an appendix. The book also contains extensive references, enabling the reader to consult the research and review literature. Each of the main chapters contains problems to allow the reader to develop topics presented in the text.

First-principles Calculations in Real-space Formalism by Kikuji Hirose Pdf

With cutting-edge materials and minute electronic devices being produced by the latest nanoscale fabrication technology, it is essential for scientists and engineers to rely on first-principles (ab initio) calculation methods to fully understand the electronic configurations and transport properties of nanostructures. It is now imperative to introduce practical and tractable calculation methods that accurately describe the physics in nanostructures suspended between electrodes. This timely volume addresses novel methods for calculating electronic transport properties using real-space formalisms free from geometrical restrictions. The book comprises two parts: The first details the basic formalism of the real-space finite-difference method and its applications. This provides the theoretical foundation for the second part of the book, which presents the methods for calculating the properties of electronic transport through nanostructures sandwiched by semi-infinite electrodes.

Phase Theory by Barbara Citko Pdf

"This research survey combines an introduction to Phase Theory with an assessment of the state of the art in Phase Theory. The term Phase Theory refers to a set of theoretical innovations in post-2000 minimalism (Chomsky 2000RFA-087, 2001RFA-088, 2004RFA-089, 2005RFA-090, 2008RFA-092). One of the core ideas in minimalism is the idea that the language faculty is an optimal solution to the constraints imposed on it by the two cognitive systems with which it interacts:"--

Romance Languages and Linguistic Theory by Enoch Oladé Aboh Pdf

The volumes "Romance Languages and Linguistic Theory: Selected papers from Going Romance " contain the selected papers of the Going Romance conferences, a major European annual discussion forum for theoretically relevant research on Romance languages. This volume assembles a significant number of selected papers that were presented at the 21st edition of Going Romance, which was organized by the Chair of Romance Linguistics of the University of Amsterdam in December 2007. The range of languages (both standard and non-standard varieties) analyzed in this volume is quite significant: Catalan, French, Italian, European and Brazilian Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish. The volume is quite representative of the spread of the variety of research carried out nowadays on Romance languages within theoretical linguistics and shows the vitality of this research."

Syntactic Complexity across Interfaces by Andreas Trotzke,Josef Bayer Pdf

Syntactic complexity has always been a matter of intense investigation in formal linguistics. Since complex syntax is clearly evidenced by sentential embedding and since embedding of one clause/phrase in another is taken to signal recursivity of the grammar, the capacity of computing syntactic complexity is of central interest to the recent hypothesis that syntactic recursion is the defining property of natural language. In the light of more recent claims according to which complex syntax is not a universal property of all living languages, the issue of how to detect and define syntactic complexity has been revived with a combination of classical and new arguments. This volume contains contributions about the formal complexity of natural language, about specific issues of clausal embedding, and about syntactic complexity in terms of grammar-external interfaces in the domain of language acquisition.

Learning Objects for Instruction: Design and Evaluation by Taylor Northrup, Pamela Pdf

Learning Objects for Instruction shows how practical models of learning objects solutions are being applied in education, organizations, industry, and the military. It includes diverse strategies used across these groups to apply learning objects -- from the use of firmly-grounded theoretical contexts to practical tool-based solutions. The reader will find a thorough history, solid models and real-world practices for using learning objects for instruction in a variety of settings. Greater numbers of organizations are expected to embrace the use of objects for instruction as issues of standardization continue to be worked out.
