They Fight Like Soldiers, They Die Like Children by Roméo Dallaire Pdf

"It is my hope that through the pages of this remarkable book, you will discover groundbreaking thoughts on building partnerships and networks to enhance the global movement to end child soldiering; you will gain new and holistic insights on what constitutes a child soldier; you will learn more about girl soldiers, who have not been fully considered in the discussion of this issue; you will discover methods on how to influence national policies and the training of security forces; and you will find practical steps that will foster better coordination between security forces and humanitarian efforts."-Ishmael Beah As the leader of the ill-fated United Nations peacekeeping force in Rwanda, Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire came face-to-face with the horrifying reality of child soldiers during the genocide of 1994. Since then the incidence of child soldiers has proliferated in conflicts around the world: they are cheap, plentiful, expendable, with an incredible capacity, once drugged and brainwashed, for both loyalty and barbarism. The dilemma of the adult soldier who faces them is poignantly expressed in this book's title: when children are shooting at you, they are soldiers, but as soon as they are wounded or killed, they are children once again. Believing that not one of us should tolerate a child being used in this fashion, Dallaire has made it his mission to end the use of child soldiers. Where Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone gave us wrenching testimony of the devastating experience of being a child soldier, Dallaire offers intellectually daring and enlightened approaches to the child soldier phenomenon, and insightful, empowering solutions to eradicate it.

Why They Fight by T.M. Howell Pdf

"It is 4:30 a.m. Michelle. It is time to wake up," a soft automated female voice whispers, Michelle; it is time to wake up." "Alright, I'm up, I'm up, just shut up." Michelle snaps at the clock. At that moment, the voice-operated clock begins to play the programmed music set for mornings. Michelle begins to sit up, stretching her body as she tries to shake the world of slumber; she realizes that after today her whole world will change. This was a very important day for her. As a journalist, she must be ready at all times, but it has been a while since she had to get up so early. This is a very unorthodox manner of doing things in her field. Usually all interviews had to be approved by the interviewee and management. She was personally approached by military personnel for this assignment instead of getting assigned the interview. The higher-ups had no idea and she saw this as a great opportunity to move ahead. She would be the first reporter to get an exclusive interview without the usual censorship. It was unheard of having an uncensored interview with military and political personnel. The Republic was very strict on what was put out there about its leaders. This had always been the norm for Michelle and others that grew up in the new Republic. "Telescreen on." she commands her voice activated system, "Turn to channel 3. Music off." while heading toward her bathroom in her dark apartment, passing by the kitchen, "Coffee brew." At that moment, the kitchen lights come on and the coffee maker begins to percolate. As she approaches the bathroom she reluctantly calls out, "Bathroom lights." The lights slowly come on as she enters the area. Michelle stood there looking into the mirror. This was something she performed every morning when she woke up. Running both her hands through her curly brown hair, she sighs, as her hair falls back down on her shoulders. She looks into her own light brown eyes that seem to change colors in different lights. She felt that her eyes where her best feature. She never truly felt as beautiful as others saw her. Men would always complement her on her flawless naturally tanned skin, her full lips and her nearly athletic body. She always felt that a man would say anything to get close to her. She exercises almost everyday after work, because of her belief that she is not physically where she should be, plus all her life in school and everywhere else the Republic had always pushed that sound health shows loyalty to oneself and the Republic.

Nor Did They Fight Anymore by David A. Maurer Pdf

“Two men separated by a century, united by blood, learn the true cost of war, a cost not dimmed by time. I hope this breakthrough book will steer some military writers toward regarding the inner and outer effects of war on combatants.” —Rita Mae Brown, best-selling author. An enduring dichotomy of war is that even as it evolves, its savage heart remains unchanged. For more than two decades Green Beret combat veteran, David A. Maurer, delved into the Civil War in order to compare his experiences in Southeast Asia with those of his great-granduncle, Jacob Shriver, who fought for the Union during the War of Rebellion. At times their two paths nearly merge when shared circumstances clear the blur of history. The rush of gratitude felt when sideling up to a campfire on a wet, cold night does not change. As this book reveals, just as unchangeable is the core of war that combat veterans see. “It takes one to know one. Only another combat veteran can fully understand the experience, sometimes the horror and sometimes humor, sometimes both simultaneously. Dave Maurer feels into the Civil War experience of his ancestor and puts the reader there in a way only a very talented writer-warrior can.” —Jim Morris, best-selling author of War Story, and recent book, The Dreaming Circus

They Fight Like Soldiers, They Die Like Children by Romeo Dallaire Pdf

"The ultimate focus of the rest of my life is to eradicate the use of child soldiers and to eliminate even the thought of the use of children as instruments of war." —Roméo Dallaire In conflicts around the world, there is an increasingly popular weapon system that requires negligible technology, is simple to sustain, has unlimited versatility and incredible capacity for both loyalty and barbarism. In fact, there is no more complete end-to-end weapon system in the inventory of war-machines. What are these cheap, renewable, plentiful, sophisticated and expendable weapons? Children. Roméo Dallaire was first confronted with child soldiers in unnamed villages on the tops of the thousand hills of Rwanda during the genocide of 1994. The dilemma of the adult soldier who faced them is beautifully expressed in his book's title: when children are shooting at you, they are soldiers, but as soon as they are wounded or killed they are children once again. Believing that not one of us should tolerate a child being used in this fashion, Dallaire has made it his mission to end the use of child soldiers. In this book, he provides an intellectually daring and enlightening introduction to the child soldier phenomenon, as well as inspiring and concrete solutions to eradicate it.
