Excerpt from Through the Gates of the Netherlands Moveover, there is an extra seat at our table for the man, woman, or child who may need or wish to occupy it. It is our memorial to our only boy, and by means of it we have entertained many an angel unawares. Little by little during the years, we have gathered some eight hundred pleasant acquaintances about us who, although they turn their backs upon us from the bookshelves, Open out most freely, if we approach them in the right mood, and yield their multitude of thoughts, sustain ing, instructive, helpful, uplifting, nor ever refuse Of their largess acquaintances worth having, or so it has seemed to me. If I show you above the Shelves a few choice etchings and old engravings, of which both James and I are justly proud, I think I have given a fair state ment of our entire wealth, real and common. The Netherlands (Classic Reprint) by Mary MacGregor Pdf

Excerpt from The Netherlands I believe there is no boy, the wide world over, who has not once upon a time set out in search of a hero, and found him, too, in many an unlikely corner. And thereupon he has set him up in a niche of the temple which he keeps for the most part locked, but which at rare moments he visits, reverently and with care. I who write came one day to a little sea-swept land bound by great reaches of grass-tied dunes, and there, lingering to learn the history of the country, unawares I found my hero. Journey through Landscape in Seventeenth-Century Holland: The Haarlem Print Series and Dutch Identity by Anonim Pdf

The sets of landscape etchings produced in the second decade of the seventeenth century by Claes Jansz. Visscher, Esaias van den Velde, Willem Buytewech, and Jan van de Velde drew on and contributed to a print culture that played a key role in defining "Dutch" landscape. Examination of these printed landscape series as part of a wide-ranging print culture underscores the consistent interrelationship of landscape, history, and politics. To varying degrees, the contemporaneous descriptive geographies, histories, allegorical tableaux, didactic prints, and poetic anthologies considered in this study provide parallels for the prints' serial structure, journey theme, and commemorative motifs. Moreover, as part of a wider enterprise of Dutch self-definition, they provide cultural guidelines for the interpretation of landscape in prints and paintings. Levesque's study of the Dutch seventeenth-century experience of place is two-tiered. She addresses the journey through landscape as an interpretive framework, the spatial structure of knowledge, the benefits of travel from the point of view of humanists, and the growth of a Dutch national self-consciousness expressed through landscape. She also provides a close reading of the structure and motifs in the print series of Claes Jansz. Visscher, Esaias van den Velde, Willem Buytewech, and Jan van de Velde.

A History of Dutch in the Far East (Classic Reprint) by Albert Hyma Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Dutch in the Far East Then followed years of disillusionment. Even peace did not bring back the old days of order and meticulous progress in nearly all directions. The revolution, which began with slogans of liberty and prosperity, ended with the liberty to destroy and to kill foreigners of all races. Our Indonesian friend continues with these simple words: Out of this ferment emerged the tragedy and problems of the Indonesian State and its peoples after their libera tion. Indonesia, one of the richest countries of the world and a nation with every possibility for advancement, be came, as it were, swamped in a morass. Holland by Esther Singleton Pdf

Excerpt from Holland: As Seen and Described by Famous Writers The purpose of this book, planned on similar lines to my former books on Japan and Russia, is to furnish the traveller with a general view of Holland. From many writers who treat of the history, topography, manners and customs and art of this interesting country, I have selected such essays and extracts as will best contribute towards this end; and have gathered between these covers such descriptive matter and general information as I think the tourist would like to carry with him, or to refresh his memory with on his return. Lysbeth by H. Rider Haggard Pdf

Excerpt from Lysbeth: A Tale of the Dutch There are, roughly, two ways of writing an historical romance - the first to choose some notable and leading characters of the time to be treated, and by the help of history attempt to picture them as they were; the other, to make a study of that time and history With the country in which it was enacted, and from it to deduce the neces sary characters.
