Translational Neuroimmunology in Multiple Sclerosis by Ruth Arnon,Ariel Miller Pdf

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common disabling neurological disease of young adults. More than 2.3 million people are affected by MS worldwide. Symptoms can vary widely, depending on the localization and amount of the damage induced by combined inflammatory, demyelinating, and neurodegenerative processes. Although a cure for MS does not currently exist, therapies can help treat MS attacks, attenuate disease activity, reduce progress of the disease, and manage symptoms. Translational Neuroimmunology in Multiple Sclerosis provides an overview of recent findings and knowledge of the neuroimmunology of multiple sclerosis, from experimental models and the human disease to the translation of this research to immunotherapeutic strategies. Chapters describe genetic and environmental factors underlying the disease pathogenesis of MS as a basis for development of immunotherapies, immunological markers of disease activity, pharmacogenetics, and responses to therapy. Immunomodulatory therapies currently in practice and future therapeutic strategies on the horizon—such as neuroprotective strategies, stem cells, and repair promotion—are discussed. Contributed by renowned leaders in the field, this cross-disciplinary volume is a great resource for basic scientists and clinical practitioners in neuroscience, neurology, immunology, pharmacology, and in-drug development. Provides an overview of recent findings and knowledge of the neuroimmunology of multiple sclerosis and the translation of this research to immunotherapy treatment Edited by renowned leaders in the field of neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis Contains the latest resource material for basic and clinical scientists and practitioners in neuroscience, neurology, immunology, and pharmacology

Translational Neuroimmunology: From Disease Mechanisms to Clinical Applications by Silva Lyman Pdf

Neuroimmunology is a field that combines neuroscience, the study of the nervous system and immunology, the study of the immune system, into one discipline within this field neuroimmunology. The interaction of these two complex systems is studied the neuroimmunologists throughout development, homeostasis, and response to injuries. The adaptive and innate immune systems continuously monitor the nervous system. The immune system identifies and responds to changes in cell identity and neural connectivity during development and adult life. The immune system and nervous system require suitable degrees of cellular differentiation, organizational integrity, and neural network connectivity. Pro-inflammatory cytokines which are released by activated macrophages and monocytes during infection, can impact neural targets that control thermogenesis, behavior, sleep, and mood. Cytokines are produced in the central nervous system due to brain injury, during bacterial and viral infections, and neurodegenerative processes. This book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex advancements in the field of translational neuroimmunology. It includes contributions of experts and scientists which will provide innovative insights on neuroimmunology and its clinical applications. This book will provide comprehensive knowledge to the readers.

Update on Translational Neuroimmunology - Research of ISNI 2018 by Sandra Amor,Fabienne Brilot,David Brown,Judith M. Greer,Marc J. Ruitenberg Pdf

The 14th International Congress of Neuroimmunology, ISNI 2018, was held in August 2018 in Brisbane, Australia, and is a biennial event organized by the International Society of Neuroimmunology (ISNI). The theme of ISNI 2018 was “Travelling the Neuroimmunological Translational Highway”, and the Congress highlighted many research discoveries that bridge the gap between basic and clinical sciences, and which impact our understanding of pathogenic immune-mediated mechanisms in diseases affecting the nervous system. In this Research Topic, we aim to give a comprehensive overview of topics highlighted at the Congress, showcasing the current state of the field of neuroimmunology and where it is going in the near future.

Recent Advances in Psychiatry from Psycho-Neuro-Immunology Research: Autoimmunencephalitis, Autoimmune-Encephalopathy, Mild Encephalitis by Karl Bechter,David Brown,Souhel Najjar Pdf

Growing evidence derived from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), neuropathological, imaging, genetic, and epidemiological studies link neuroinflammation and immune dysregulation to a subset of individuals with a variety of severe mental disorders (SMDs), including affective and non-affective psychotic disorders. Further, the recent discoveries of neuronal surface antibodies (NSAs) in autoimmune encephalitis (AE) presenting with diverse neuropsychiatric disorders such as psychosis and cognitive decline, among many others, provides further support to the notion that CNS autoimmunity and neuroinflammation can contribute to the neurobiology of psychiatric disturbances. Further, these immune mechanisms may contribute to a subset of patients currently diagnosed as having treatment-resistant SMDs such as schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. Additionally, mounting data indicate that various infections can serve as an immunological trigger of aberrant immune responses, presumably by causing release of excess neural antigen, thereby giving rise to NSAs or aberrant immune cellular responses to give rise to primary or secondary psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and those associated with AE, respectively. Collectively, these findings support the “mild encephalitis” hypothesis of SMD. The significant overlap among AE-associated psychosis, systemic autoimmune disorder-associated psychosis, and psychotic disorders associated with pathological processes involving inflammation and immune dysregulation has also prompted some authors to adopt the term “autoimmune psychosis” (AP). This term reflects that this psychosis subtype is mechanistically linked to complex neuroimmune and inflammatory signalling abnormalities that can be responsive to early immunomodulatory treatment. It also suggests that a subset of AP might represent an incomplete or “forme fruste” subtype of AE presenting with dominant or pure psychiatric symptoms mimicking primary psychiatric illnesses. Because data indicate that delayed diagnosis and treatment may lead to permanent sequelae, early recognition of AP utilizing neurodiagnostic workup (e.g., CSF analysis, neuroimaging, and EEG) and its early treatment with appropriate immunotherapy are paramount to a meaningful recovery. This eBook will provide an overview of the current knowledge and research areas from epidemiology, risk factors and diagnosis to the management of these conditions, in this rapidly emerging field, helping to bridge the gaps in knowledge that currently exist in the disciplines of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Neuroimmunology.
