True Warnings and False Alarms by Allan Mazur Pdf

Given time, scientists reach consensus about the truth or falsity of a wide range of alleged hazards. Today, there is broad agreement that CFCs destroy stratospheric ozone. On the other hand, research does not support claims that electromagnetic fields from transmission lines cause a noticeable increase of leukemia. But new allegations continuously arise. Are manufactured chemicals in the environment distorting normal hormonal processes in our bodies? Are genetically modified foods a cause for concern? Addressing one of the most vexing problems in risk policy, Allan Mazur asks how we can tell, at an early stage, how seriously we should take a new warning. To identify hallmarks that could help predict the truth or falsity of an alleged hazard, Mazur analyzes 31 health warnings raised during the 1950s and 1960s about diverse technologies, including fluoridation, DDT, cyclamate, nuclear weapons testing, and birth control pills. Among his considerations are the initial source of an alarm, the biases held by its primary 'sponsors,' and the type of media coverage it receives. With 30 to 50 years of hindsight, he identifies characteristics - apparent from the outset of a controversy - that most effectively distinguish true warnings from false alarms. Early recognition and a timely response to a genuine hazard are important to protect our environment, health, and economic well-being. But if we act quickly and a warning turns out to be false, money is wasted, people are needlessly frightened, regulators lose credibility, and our ability to appropriately handle the next set of risks is compromised. Mazur's findings do not provide certainty about which of today's warnings will prove true and which will prove false. But they do help us to make informed judgments about where it is best and most reasonable to direct our worries and resources.

False Alarm by Bjorn Lomborg Pdf

The New York Times-bestselling "skeptical environmentalist" argues that panic over climate change is causing more harm than good Hurricanes batter our coasts. Wildfires rage across the American West. Glaciers collapse in the Artic. Politicians, activists, and the media espouse a common message: climate change is destroying the planet, and we must take drastic action immediately to stop it. Children panic about their future, and adults wonder if it is even ethical to bring new life into the world. Enough, argues bestselling author Bjorn Lomborg. Climate change is real, but it's not the apocalyptic threat that we've been told it is. Projections of Earth's imminent demise are based on bad science and even worse economics. In panic, world leaders have committed to wildly expensive but largely ineffective policies that hamper growth and crowd out more pressing investments in human capital, from immunization to education. False Alarm will convince you that everything you think about climate change is wrong -- and points the way toward making the world a vastly better, if slightly warmer, place for us all.

Tomorrow's Table by Pamela C. Ronald,R. W. Adamchak Pdf

By the year 2050, Earth's population will double. If we continue with current farming practices, vast amounts of wilderness will be lost, millions of birds and billions of insects will die, and the public will lose billions of dollars as a consequence of environmental degradation. Clearly, there must be a better way to meet the need for increased food production. Written as part memoir, part instruction, and part contemplation, Tomorrow's Table argues that a judicious blend of two important strands of agriculture--genetic engineering and organic farming--is key to helping feed the world's growing population in an ecologically balanced manner. Pamela Ronald, a geneticist, and her husband, Raoul Adamchak, an organic farmer, take the reader inside their lives for roughly a year, allowing us to look over their shoulders so that we can see what geneticists and organic farmers actually do. The reader sees the problems that farmers face, trying to provide larger yields without resorting to expensive or environmentally hazardous chemicals, a problem that will loom larger and larger as the century progresses. They learn how organic farmers and geneticists address these problems. This book is for consumers, farmers, and policy decision makers who want to make food choices and policy that will support ecologically responsible farming practices. It is also for anyone who wants accurate information about organic farming, genetic engineering, and their potential impacts on human health and the environment.

Epilepsy by Ivan Osorio,Hitten P. Zaveri,Mark G. Frei,Susan Arthurs Pdf

Epilepsy, one of the most prevalent neurological disorders, affects approximately 1% (greater than 60 million) of the world's population. In an estimated 20 million of these patients, seizures are not controlled even by multiple anti-seizure drugs, and are extremely difficult to predict. Epilepsy: The Intersection of Neurosciences, Biology, Mathematics, Engineering, and Physics seamlessly brings together the neurosciences, mathematics, computational sciences, engineering, physics, and clinical epileptology to present to readers a highly didactic, integrated, clear and practically useful knowledge base and research directions. Laying out the foundations of signal analysis, data conditioning, linear and non-linear analysis, introduction to dynamical systems and fundamental anatomical and neurophysiological concepts, this book: Introduces non-physicians to language and concepts necessary to establish a meaningful dialog with epileptologists Introduces physicians to dynamical theory and signal processing without which interdisciplinary collaborations would not be productive Mines knowledge from fields devoted to the investigation of aperiodic paroxysmal relaxation phenomena, such as earthquakes, which bear dynamical similarities with epilepsy, so as to lay the proper scientific foundations for epileptology and foster much needed therapeutic advances efficiently Reviews spatiotemporal behavior of seizures, mechanisms of epileptogenesis and ictogenesis as well as of seizure control and ancillary technology Calls attention to nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy as a potentially fruitful paradigm for advancing seizure prediction. Of all neurological disorders, epilepsy demands of investigators the broadest and deepest knowledge of dynamical, control, and system theories, knowledge that cannot be amassed without possessing a certain level of sophistication in relevant areas of neurosciences, physics, mathematics, and engineering. Narrowing the inescapable cultural chasm that commonly fragments multidisciplinary efforts, this book captures and enriches the burgeoning interdisciplinary synergism in the nascent field of dynamical epileptology.

The Reality of Precaution by James Hammit,Michael Rogers,Peter Sand,Jonathan B. Wiener Pdf

The 'Precautionary Principle' has sparked the central controversy over European and U.S. risk regulation. The Reality of Precaution is the most comprehensive study to go beyond precaution as an abstract principle and test its reality in practice. This groundbreaking resource combines detailed case studies of a wide array of risks to health, safety, environment and security; a broad quantitative analysis; and cross-cutting chapters on politics, law, and perceptions. The authors rebut the rhetoric of conflicting European and American approaches to risk, and show that the reality has been the selective application of precaution to particular risks on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as a constructive exchange of policy ideas toward 'better regulation.' The book offers a new view of precaution, regulatory reform, comparative analysis, and transatlantic relations.

Architecting Dependable Systems VII by Antonio Casimiro,Rogério de Lemos,Cristina Gacek Pdf

As software systems become increasingly ubiquitous, issues of dependability become ever more crucial. Given that solutions to these issues must be considered from the very beginning of the design process, it is clear that dependability and security have to be addressed at the architectural level. This book, as well as its six predecessors, was born of an effort to bring together the research communities of software architectures, dependability, and security. This state-of-the-art survey contains expanded, peer-reviewed papers based on selected contributions from the Workshop on Architecting Dependable Systems (WADS 2009), held at the International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN 2009), as well as a number of invited papers written by renowned experts in the area. The 13 papers are organized in topical sections on: mobile and ubiquitous systems, architecting systems, fault management, and experience and vision.

Environmental Policy by Barry C. Field Pdf

Nations throughout the world are struggling to limit and manage environmental damages stemming from economic production and consumption. In virtually every country, collective action in the form of public policy has been undertaken to rein in these impacts. This text provides an authoritative overview of the dynamic process through which governments make decisions on environmental matters. In clear, reader-friendly language, Field introduces students to the rudiments of the public policy process, the participants and their roles, and the content of the major federal environmental statutes regarding air, water, and land pollution. Throughout the discussion, Field explores the evolving role of the federal government in U.S. environmental policy. He also highlights important ongoing policy issues, both domestic and international, that will confront policy makers well into the future. --Back cover.
