Turbulence theory is one of the most intriguing parts of fluid mechanics and many outstanding scientists have tried to apply their knowledge to the development of the theory and to offer useful recommendations for solution of some practical problems. In this monograph the author attempts to integrate many specific approaches into the unified theory. The basic premise is the simple idea that a small eddy, that is an element of turbulent meso-structure, possesses its own dynamics as an object rotating with its own spin velocity and obeying the Newton dynamics of a finite body. A number of such eddies fills a coordinate cell, and the angular momentum balance has to be formulated for this spatial cell. If the cell coincides with a finite difference element at a numerical calculation and if the external length scale is large, this elementary volume can be considered as a differential one and a continuum parameterization has to be used. Nontrivial angular balance is a consequence of the asymmetrical Reynolds stress action at the oriented sides of an elementary volume. At first glance, the averaged dyad of velocity components is symmetrical, == However, if averaging is performed over the plane with normal nj, the principle of commutation is lost. As a result, the stress tensor asymmetry j is determined by other factors that participate in the angular momentum balance. This is the only possibility to determine a stress in engineering.

The present volume comprises the contributions of some of the participants of the NATO Advance Studies Institute "Turbulence, Weak and Strong", held in Cargese, in August 1994. The book provides an original approach in the research of structural analysis of free developed shear compressible turbulence at high Reynolds number on the base of direct numerical simulation (DNS) and instability evolution for ideal medium (integral conservation laws) with approximate mechanism of dissipation (FLUX dissipative monotone ?upwind? difference schemes) and does not use any explicit sub-grid approximation and semi-empirical models of turbulence. Convective mixing is considered as a principal part of conservation law.Appropriate hydrodynamic instabilities (free developed shear turbulence) are investigated from unique point of view. It is based on the concept of large ordered structures with stochastic core of small scale developed turbulence (?turbulent spot?). Decay of ?turbulent spot? are simulated by Monte Carlo method. Proposed approach is based on two hypotheses: statistical independence of the characteristic of large ordered structures (LOS) and small-scale turbulence (ST) ?and? weak influence of molecular viscosity (or more generally, dissipative mechanism) on properties of large ordered structures.Two versions of instabilities, due to Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov are studied detail by the three-dimensional calculations, extended to the large temporal intervals, up to turbulent stage and investigation turbulent mixing zone (TMZ).The book covers both the fundamental and practical aspects of turbulence and instability and summarizes the result of numerical experiments conducted over 30 years period with direct participation of the author.In the book are cited the opinions of the leading scientists in this area of research: Acad. Following the previous ETC meeting in Lyon (1986), Berlin (1988), Stockholm (1990) and Delft (1992), the Fifth ETC was aimed at providing a review of the fundamental aspects of turbulence from a theoretical, numerical and experimental point of view. In the magnificent town of Siena, more than 250 scientists from all over the world, spent four days discussing new ideas on turbulence. As a research worker in the field of turbulence, I must say that the works presented at the Conference, on which this book is based, covered almost all areas in this field. I also think that this book provides a major opportunity to have a complete overview of the most recent research works. I am extremely grateful to Prof. C. Cercignani, Dr. M. Loffredo, and Prof. R. Piva who, as members of the local organizing committee, share the success of the Conference.
