Legends of Vietnam by Nghia M. Vo Pdf

Legends are a mirror of the culture that creates them, a revealing lens through which to observe society, religion, history, and traditions. This volume explores Vietnamese legends from 1321 to today--tales of gods, spirits, ghosts, giants, extraordinary individuals, heroes, common people, and animals. It explains the mores, thought processes, and religions that formed the genesis of Vietnamese legends, traces the development of legends through time and space, and highlights the historical and social differences between northern and southern legends. Over time, this work shows, Vietnamese legends have evolved from a 14th century means of government propaganda to become a form of news, entertainment, and thought for the masses.

The Magical Starfruit Tree by Rosalind Wang Pdf

The Magical Starfruit Tree teaches children about the virtue of sharing, especially with those less fortunate than you through the retelling of a Chinese folktale by an author and illustrator who are both Chinese. The Magical Starfruit Tree tells the story of a greedy peddler, Ah-Di, a kindhearted young boy, Ming-Ming, and an old beggar on a hot day. In spite of the heat and the old man's apparent thirst, the miserly peddler refuses to give him a juicy starfruit. Although he has little, Ming-Ming offers to buy a piece of fruit for the old man. The beggar gratefully accepts and eats the fruit, saving only one seed. Calling for someone to bring him a pot of hot water, he plants the seed. The old man uses his magic to make the seed grow, blossom, and bear fruit, all before the eyes of the bewildered crowd. In the end there is enough fruit for everyone, the peddler is chastised for his greedy ways and Ming-Ming is rewarded for his generosity. Retold and illustrated by a Chinese author and Chinese artist, The Magical Starfruit Tree is a traditional story that teaches values to children through example. It also touches on one of the main tenets of the Chinese culture, which is to honor your elders and treat them with respect.

Four Decades On by Scott Laderman,Edwin A. Martini Pdf

In Four Decades On, historians, anthropologists, and literary critics examine the legacies of the Second Indochina War, or what most Americans call the Vietnam War, nearly forty years after the United States finally left Vietnam. They address matters such as the daunting tasks facing the Vietnamese at the war's end—including rebuilding a nation and consolidating a socialist revolution while fending off China and the Khmer Rouge—and "the Vietnam syndrome," the cynical, frustrated, and pessimistic sense that colored America's views of the rest of the world after its humiliating defeat in Vietnam. The contributors provide unexpected perspectives on Agent Orange, the POW/MIA controversies, the commercial trade relationship between the United States and Vietnam, and representations of the war and its aftermath produced by artists, particularly writers. They show how the war has continued to affect not only international relations but also the everyday lives of millions of people around the world. Most of the contributors take up matters in the United States, Vietnam, or both nations, while several utilize transnational analytic frameworks, recognizing that the war's legacies shape and are shaped by dynamics that transcend the two countries. Contributors. Alex Bloom, Diane Niblack Fox, H. Bruce Franklin, Walter Hixson, Heonik Kwon, Scott Laderman, Mariam B. Lam, Ngo Vinh Long, Edwin A. Martini, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Christina Schwenkel, Charles Waugh

Twentysomething Essays by Twentysomething Writers by Matt Kellogg,Jillian Quint Pdf

Selected as the winners of Random House’s national contest, a stunning collection of essays ranging from comic to poignant, personal to political, by the brightest young writers you haven’t heard of . . . yet. Here, for the first time, current twentysomethings come together on their own terms, in their own words, and begin to define this remarkably diverse and self-aware generation. Tackling an array of subjects–career, family, sex, religion, technology, art–they form a vibrant, unified community while simultaneously proving that there is no typical twentysomething experience. In this collection, a young father works the late-night shift at Wendy’s, learning the finer points of status, teamwork, and french fries. An artist’s nude model explains why she’s happy to be viewed as an object. An international relief worker wrestles with his choices as he starts to resent the very people who need his help the most. A devout follower of Joan Didion explains what New York means to her. And a young army engineer spends his time in Kuwait futilely trying to grow a mustache like his dad’s. With grace, wit, humor, and urgency, these writers invite us into their lives and into their heads. Twentysomething Essays by Twentysomething Writers is a rich, provocative read as well as a bold statement from a generation just now coming into its own, including these essays “California” by Jess Lacher “The Waltz” by Mary Beth Ellis “The Mustache Race” by Bronson Lemer “Sex and the Sickbed” by Jennifer Glaser “Tricycle” by Rachel Kempf “Prime-Time You” by John Fischer “Backlash” by Shahnaz Habib “Think Outside the Box but Stay Inside the Grid” by Emma Black “Finding the Beat” by Eli James “You Shall Go out with Joy and be Led Forth with Peace” by Kyle Minor “The Idiot’s Guide to Your Palm” by Colleen Kinder “Sheer Dominance” by Christopher Poling “Live Nude Girl” by Kathleen Rooney “An Evening in April” by Radhiyah Ayobami “Cliché Rape Story” by Marisa McCarthy “Rock my Network” by Theodora Stites “Goodbye to All That” by Eula Biss “All the Right Answers” by Brendan Park “Why I Had To Leave” by Luke Mullins “In-Between Places” by Mary Kate Frank “A Red Spoon for the Nameless” by Burlee Vang “My Little Comma” by Elrena Evans “Fight Me” by Miellyn Fitzwater “The Secret Lives of My Parents” by Kate McGovern “My Roaring Twenties” by Lauren Monroe “In, From the Outside” by Katherine Dykstra “The Mysteries of Life . . .
