Urban Mobility Development in Northeast India by Tumbenthung Y. Humtsoe Pdf

Urban Mobility Development in Northeast India theoretically and empirically explores the interrelationship between and among city, transportation, economic growth and environment to contribute towards engendering green urbanization for green growth. In a time of aggravating environmental crisis, the book recognizes the duality of contrasting impact of city and transport to economic development and environmental degradation. To serve as a guide for policy research, the book accessibly presents a contextual study blending qualitative as well as quantitative methodology in the context of a highland as well as a frontier capital city of the Northeastern Indian state of Nagaland, Kohima, towards creating a sustainable city with an inclusive and green mobility. The book underscores that management of urbanization and urban mobility challenges should go beyond supply side management and demand side management by democratizing policy making as well as considering efficiency, equity, welfare and practicality concerns and suchlike rationales. By traversing from abstraction to everyday life, from global context to frontier context and from macro level to micro level, the book makes significant theoretical as well as empirical contribution. The book will be of use to students, researchers, policy practitioners as well as general readers interested in Urban Studies, Transport Economics, Growth Economics, Development Studies, Environmental Studies and Asian Studies, especially in relation to highland and frontier regions in developing economies in general and Northeastern Region of India in particular.

Routledge Readings on Security and Governance in Northeastern India by Sumi Krishna Pdf

Routledge Readings on Security and Governance in Northeastern India: Resource Conflicts, Militarisation and Development Challenges presents some of the finest essays on a region that stretches across the Northeastern Himalaya, eight Indian States and many tribal and non-tribal peoples. With a lucid Introduction, this and its companion volume, Routledge Readings on Colonial to Contemporary Northeastern India offer a compelling look into the society, polity, contemporary security and developmental issues in northeast India. It covers several critical themes and unravels complexities fraught by the unique biogeography and socio-political history of the region. The fifteen chapters in this multidisciplinary volume, divided into three sections, examine land laws, conflict and resource management and local governance. It discusses the political interplay of ethnicities and resource appropriation in a modernizing, globalizing economy as well as instances of conflicts and violence in highly militarized spaces in the region. It offers an engaged and insightful look into the rural and urban human development contexts in the region from authors who have contributed significantly to the academic and/or policy discourse on the subject. This book will serve as essential reading for students, scholars, policymakers, practitioners of South Asian studies, Northeast India studies, history, development studies, labour studies, sociology, public administration, environmental studies, law and human rights, regional literature, cultural studies, geography, and economics.

Urban Development in North-East India by A. K. Neog,Dr. A.K. Neog & H.K. Mazhari Pdf

Towns are the focal points of trade and administration. Administrative compulsions, economic and commercial necessities influence the location and development of towns. Strategic requirements also determine the setting up of new and small towns. New towns in North East India are over grown villages; trading centres with some rural development administrative outfits which become urban settlements. Most of the urban centres do not enjoy modern sanitation facilities, portable and safer water supply. Urban centre in North East India numbering 195 (1991) are like slum like situation with no civic amenities, education, health care, and modern sanitation facilities. There is hardly any agricultural surplus to sustain the urban life and social development. Social and economic compulsions lead people to migrate in urban centres where bulk of people live in dire poverty. These small towns do not have much scope and potentiality for genuine growth. They grow when Government administrative machinery expands. For their growth as vibrating life centres. North East India’s economy must be expanded with Agricultural surplus to sustain urban development. Appropriate steps must be taken to streamline the management structure by abolishing the system of multiplicity of authorities for urban planning and its execution.

Urbanisms in South Asia by Meeta Deka Pdf

Urban studies or urban history has recently emerged as a compelling framework for historical inquiry as it is a potent tool for the discovery of variations in urbanism and urbanization in the early modern and modern period. Urbanisms in South Asia: Northeast India Outside-In focuses on space syntax and social identity, power and governance, environment and ecology, culture and modernity, lived experiences, and the establishment of the transnational as pivotal for understanding the process of urbanization in the local as well as global context. With several chapters based on primary sources, the book offers new information on cities evolving on diverse topographies such as coastal areas, plains and even hilly states, as it attempts to examine the inner dynamics of cities and beyond. As the developing countries of South Asia undergo rapid urbanization, and urbanism takes on an increasingly global perspective through interactions and developments between cities and the environment, beyond nation-states and across continental boundaries, this volume strives to help its readers to look 'Outside-In' through comparative, transnational or crosscultural approaches. With an interdisciplinary approach, which includes sociology, the natural sciences, environmental history, archaeology, geography, history and psychology to understanding urbanism, these essays, variegated in outlook and geographical settings, tease out further research prospects while stimulating interest on urban studies in general.

North-East India: Land, People and Economy by K.R. Dikshit,Jutta K Dikshit Pdf

North-East India, comprising the seven contiguous states around Assam, the principal state of the region, is a relatively unknown, yet very fascinating region. The forest clad peripheral mountains, home to indigenous peoples like the Nagas, Mizos and the Khasis, the densely populated Brahmaputra valley with its lush green tea gardens and the golden rice fields, the moderately populated hill regions and plateaus, and the sparsely inhabited Himalayas, form a unique mosaic of natural and cultural landscapes and human interactions, with unparalleled diversity. The book provides a glimpse into the region’s past and gives a comprehensive picture of its physical environment, people, resources and its economy. The physical environment takes into account not only the structural base of the region, its physical characteristics and natural vegetation but also offers an impression of the region’s biodiversity and the measures undertaken to preserve it. The people of the region, especially the indigenous population, inhabiting contrasting environments and speaking a variety of regional and local dialects, have received special attention, bringing into focus the role of migration that has influenced the traditional societies, for centuries. The book acquaints the readers with spatial distribution, life style and culture of the indigenous people, outlining the unique features of each tribe. The economy of the region, depending originally on primitive farming and cottage industries, like silkworm rearing, but now greatly transformed with the emergence of modern industries, power resources and expanding trade, is reviewed based on authentic data and actual field observations. The epilogue, the last chapter in the book, summarizes the authors’ perception of the region and its future.
