Muadee by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Pdf

This document is the final report of the MAUDEE (Mars Upper Atmosphere Dynamics, Energetics, and Evolution) consortium. It describes a low cost Discovery mission to investigate the upper atmosphere of Mars and to understand the manner in which Mars has evolved over geologic time. In keeping with the innovative philosophy permeating the Discovery Program and in order to minimize the burden of reading an extensive prose exposition, a new presentation format has been adopted. The format involves a series of view graphs with facing text. The view graphs form the basis of a complete oral presentation of the MAUDEE mission and the facing text provides more detailed, but still brief, explanatory descriptions. Readers can scan the view graphs and/or read the facing text at their discretion. The oral presentation of this study was given to code SL personnel at NASA Headquarters on February 23, 1994. MAUDEE is an essential component of the Mars Exploration Program. It provides the information required to understand the evolution of the planet via the escape of volatiles. It provides the key measurements needed to understand the upper atmosphere of the last of the three terrestrial planets to be so studied. It connects and supplements investigations based on other Mars missions: Mars Surveyor, Planet-B and Mars-96. The MAUDEE mission plan involves a combination of remote and in-situ sensors, housed in three instrument packages. The sensors make measurements of the atmospheric regions between 60-200 km. These instruments are based on extensive heritage from Earth explorers and Pioneer Venus. The mission scenario has several phases and employs aerobraking maneuvers to lower initial apoapsis, thereby reducing fuel requirements. The spacecraft has body-mounted solar cells, enabling deep diving into the Martian atmosphere. The orbital inclination allows for pole-to-pole latitudinal sweeps in an initial elliptical phase, followed by a circular phase affording detailed diurnal measur...

Fundamentals of Atmospheric Energetics by A. Wiin-Nielsen,Tsing-Chang Chen Pdf

This beginning graduate-level text treats in detail the relations between internal, potential, and kinetic energy in the atmosphere. The first part of the book describes the generation, transformation, and dissipation of the basic energy quantities in the global atmosphere and the subdivision of these forms of energy in a number of energy reservoirs. The second part covers energetics in open domains and presents the major results of observational studies. Individual chapters discuss energetics of the tropics and the Southern Hemisphere and of such phenomena as the jet stream and stationary eddies. This will be a valuable text for advanced students in atmospheric dynamics.

Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System by Yukitoshi Nishimura,Olga Verkhoglyadova,Yue Deng,Shun-Rong Zhang Pdf

Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System provides a systematic understanding of Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere dynamics. Cross-scale coupling has become increasingly important in the Space Physics community. Although large-scale processes can specify the averaged state of the system reasonably well, they cannot accurately describe localized and rapidly varying structures in space in actual events. Such localized and variable structures can be as intense as the large-scale features. This book covers observations on quantifying coupling and energetics and simulation on evaluating impacts of cross-scale processes. It includes an in-depth review and summary of the current status of multi-scale coupling processes, fundamental physics, and concise illustrations and plots that are usable in tutorial presentations and classrooms. Organized by physical quantities in the system, Cross-Scale Coupling and Energy Transfer in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Thermosphere System reviews recent advances in cross-scale coupling and energy transfer processes, making it an important resource for space physicists and researchers working on the magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere. Describes frontier science and major science around M-I-T coupling, allowing for foundational understanding of this emerging field in space physics Reviews recent and key findings in the cutting-edge of the science Discusses open questions and pathways for understanding how the field is evolving

Examines how solar and terrestrial space phenomena affect sophisticated technological systems Contemporary society relies on sophisticated technologies to manage electricity distribution, communication networks, transportation safety, and myriad other systems. The successful design and operation of both ground-based and space-based systems must consider solar and terrestrial space phenomena and processes. Space Weather Effects and Applications describes the effects of space weather on various present-day technologies and explores how improved instrumentation to measure Earth's space environment can be used to more accurately forecast changes and disruptions. Volume highlights include: Damage and disruption to orbiting satellite equipment by solar particles and cosmic rays Effects of space radiation on aircraft at high altitudes and latitudes Response of radio and radar-based systems to solar bursts Disturbances to the propagation of radio waves caused by space weather How geomagnetic field changes impact ground-based systems such as pipelines Impacts of human exposure to the space radiation environment The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity.
