War Stories of the Tankers by Michael Green Pdf

This military history chronicles nearly a century of armored combat through firsthand accounts of soldiers from WWI to Iraq. Starting with the century’s first tanks as they entered no-man’s-land during World War I, War Stories of the Tankers continues through a century of military conflict, all the way to Operation Desert Storm. Here are the stories of green American tankers taking on massive and well-armored German Tigers and fighting through a screaming sea of Red Chinese soldiers in Korea. And here also are the personal tales of American tankers defending Western Europe from the threat of Soviet tanks during the Cold War. From the American soldiers who pitted their tanks against the Viet Cong in the jungles of Southeast Asia to those who put their lives on the line in the streets of Baghdad, these are the heroes of our time, taking that rare moment to tell us what it is like to face the enemy in tank warfare.

Long Night of the Tankers by D. H. Bercuson,David Jay Bercuson,Holger H. Herwig Pdf

On February 16th, 1942 a Nazi U-boat brazenly shelled the huge Lago oil refinery on Aruba and torpedoed the tankers Pedernales and Oranjestad, both tied up in Aruba's San Nicolas Harbour. Oranjestad was sunk and Pedernales badly damaged. The damage to the refinery was minor, but that same night other U-boats attacked and sank four more tankers in the waters between Aruba and Curaçao and Venezuela. It was the long night of the tankers and the opening salvo of a two year struggle to dominate the Caribbean Sea. In the last twelve days of February, 1942 alone the submarines sank 17 more ships, most of them tankers. Long Night of the Tankersis the story of the German effort to cut the Caribbean off from Britain, the United States andCanada and the desperate defence mounted by the Allies, along with a half dozen other Caribbean and South American nations. The loss of the oil threatened Britain's ability to wage war; the loss of the tankers almost strangled the oil supply to America's industrial north east. When even Churchill and Roosevelt began to worry about the vulnerable Caribbean, the US and its allies poured thousands of men, hundreds of aircraft and dozens of ships into the Caribbean region, organized an effective convoy system and rallied the Central and South American nations against the Germans. By mid 1944, the Caribbean had become an Allied lake and the submarine threat was defeated. But to this day, the old timers of the islands still remember the oil-soaked beaches, the explosions in the night and the bodies of dead sailors washed ashore that marked this dramatic chapter in the Second World War.

Tanker War by Lee Allen Zatarain Pdf

"In May 1987 the US guided missile frigate Stark, calmly sailing the waters of the Persian Gulf, was suddenly blown apart by an Exocet missile fired from a MiG fighter in the air force of Iraq's Saddam Hussein. A fifth of the ship's crew were killed and many others horribly burned or wounded. This event junpstarted one of the most mysterious and underwritten conflicts in America's history: "The Tanker War," which was waged for control of the Mideast's oil supply"--Inside cover.

Blood and Fury by Stephen L. Moore Pdf

For Dutton Caliber's American War Heroes series, the gripping and action-packed combat story of America’s most celebrated tank commander, Staff Sergeant Lafayette “War Daddy” Pool. Lafayette Pool provided inspiration for Brad Pitt’s character “War Daddy” Collier in the movie Fury, but his true story is less known. Here, acclaimed author Stephen L. Moore writes the first full-length narrative to honor the valiant Texan tanker. A champion Golden Gloves boxer turned U.S. Army legend, Pool was known as the “ace of tankers” for destroying more than five enemy tanks in head-to-head combat. Sporting a pair of cowboy boots and a confident smile, Pool and his tank, In the Mood, fearlessly led the charge into at least twenty-one different engagements across France, Belgium, and Germany in World War II. His 3rd Armored superiors credit Pool’s crew with destroying at least 275 enemy vehicles, capturing 250 or more enemy soldiers, and killing or wounding more than a thousand opponents. In one three-day period alone, they knocked out four German tanks, three anti-tank guns, and fifty armored vehicles, creating an overwhelming number of enemy casualties. Drawing on official military documents, the memoirs of Pool’s crewmen, and personal interviews with the family of Pool and his comrades, Blood and Fury is full of heated battles, suspenseful near-death experiences, and indomitable bravery. At the heart of it all is an undeniable American hero: Lafayette Pool.

Long Night of the Tankers by David Jay Bercuson,Holger H. Herwig Pdf

Long Night of the Tankers presents a fresh account of a critical but often overlooked component of the Atlantic naval theatre in World War II. Using war diaries, after-action reports, and first-hand accounts, authors Bercuson and Herwig examine the story behind Operation Neuland, the German plan to prevent vital oil supplies reaching the United States and the United Kingdom from key refineries in the Caribbean. Starting in February 1942 with the initial German success in choking the oil supply to the Allied war machine, Long Night of the Tankers details the planning and execution of German operations and the subsequent diplomatic, political, and military responses of the Allies that ultimately overcame the German effort and transformed the Caribbean shipping lanes into a death trap for German U-boats.

Tanks on the Beaches by Robert M. Neiman,Kenneth W. Estes Pdf

Robert Neiman, perhaps the most experienced combat commander of the U.S. Marine Corps’ tank arm, was one of the rare USMC officers to serve in both Iwo Jima and Okinawa battles. In Tanks on the Beaches, Neiman and his coauthor, Kenneth Estes, relay vivid accounts of fighting in the Pacific War, as well as Marine Corps service during the entire World War II period, devoid of idolatry and mythmaking. The result is a war story told from the unique perspective of men fighting from armored machines in desperate battles against a determined enemy. After the capture of Guadalcanal, Neiman endured Japanese bombardments there to gather information for his assignment as operations officer of a new tank school being formed in California. He eventually led his own tank company through four island battles culminating in the cauldron of Iwo Jima. Later, he finished the war as executive officer and commanding officer of the 1st Tank Battalion on occupation and security duty in North China in 1945–46. Neiman and Estes take the reader from prewar training at Quantico and in North Carolina through the delights of a New Zealand bereft of men, the horrors of Saipan and Iwo, the peculiar situation in China after the war, and then the trip back to the States for Neiman’s successful postwar career as a lumber retailer. Through it all, Estes translates Neiman’s eye for the interesting and the human into a multifaceted tale of a young Marine going to war. This is an adventure story with many novel turns that will attract the interest of military experts, military history aficionados, Marine Corps members in general, and veterans of armored fighting vehicle units. Neiman is not a USMC icon, just one of the unheralded thousands of officers who did the real fighting. This is their story, as much as it is his.

The Milk Cows by John F. White Pdf

“A comprehensive look at the German submarine tanker program during World War II . . . engaging.” —The NYMAS Review During the Second World War the Germans developed a specially adapted U-boat oil tanker with two aims. First, by refueling the attack U-boat fleet their range of operations and duration of patrol could be significantly increased. Secondly, these underwater tankers were far more likely to avoid detection than surface support ships. The submarine tankers, affectionately known as “Milk Cows,” were regarded by both the Germans and the Allies as the most important element of the U-boat fleet. Allied forces had orders to attack the tankers first whenever a choice was presented. Until late 1942 the German Milk Cows operated with great success and few losses. But from 1943 onwards the German rendezvous ciphers were repeatedly broken by the Allies and losses mounted rapidly. The Milk Cows were highly vulnerable during the lengthy refueling procedure as they lay stationary on the surface, hatches open. By the end of the war virtually every tanker had been sunk with severe loss of life. The story of this critical campaign has been thoroughly researched by the author and is told against the background of changing U-boat fortunes. “The author is to be congratulated on his research and writing such a thorough and readable account of such an interesting subject.” —Windscreen Magazine, Military Vehicles Trust “Readers will be fascinated not just by the mainstream replenishment work but also by the book’s accounts of German submarine operations far afield.” —Navy News

Pershing's Tankers by Lawrence M. Kaplan Pdf

“Compelling . . . highly recommended to students of the Great War or of armored force development.” —The Journal of America's Military Past After the United States declared war against Germany in April 1917, the US Army established the Tank Corps to help break the deadlock of trench warfare in France. The army envisioned having a large tank force by 1919, but when the war ended in November 1918, only three tank battalions had participated in combat operations. Shortly after, Brigadier Gen. Samuel D. Rockenbach, chief of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) Tank Corps under Gen. John J. Pershing, issued a memorandum to many of his officers to write brief accounts of their experiences that would supplement official records. Their narratives varied in size, scope, and depth, and covered a range of topics, including the organizing, training, and equipping of the tank corps. For the first time since these reports were submitted, Pershing's Tankers: Personal Accounts of the AEF Tank Corps in World War I presents an unprecedented look into the experiences of soldiers in the US Army Tank Corps. The book provides fresh insight into the establishment and combat operations of the tank corps, including six personal letters written by Col. George S. Patton Jr., who commanded a tank brigade in World War I. Congressional testimony, letters, and a variety of journal, magazine, and newspaper articles in this collection provide additional context to the officers’ revealing accounts. Based on completely new sources that include official US Army personnel reports previously unknown to researchers, this illuminating work offers a vivid picture of life and activities in the US Army Tank Corps in France; a rare glimpse into the thoughts and experiences of a broad cross-section of men from the senior leadership down to the platoon level; and a behind-the-scenes look at how this first generation of “tankers” helped develop new war-fighting capabilities for the US Army.

A Fighter Tanker's Story by John Marshall Pdf

A Fighter Tanker's Story by John F. Marshall is the true memoir of a farm-boy-turned-soldier and his poignant, crushingly real, and often unexpectedly funny experiences in World War II. In stark and almost poetic prose, the reader joins Marshall and his tank crew as they defy the odds and battle across Europe. On the first day of combat his tank commander is killed before the tank fires a single shot. But he and his crew continue to fight through every stage of the War in Europe: the Hürtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge and in the small and sometimes deadly hamlets of France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. From "regular" days (such as digging latrines and KP duty) to events that could appear in a movie (like a chance meeting with General Patton), Marshall's descriptions recount one soldier's everyday life in World War II.
