Discover the best places to spot 300 of the world’s most exciting and unusual creatures, from the soaring Andean condor and prowling Bengal tiger, to singing humpback whales and migrating wildebeest. For many people, one of the most rewarding experiences of travel is seeing creatures you wouldn’t encounter back home. Whether you set out to see them on safari or spot them by sheer luck, there’s a thrill and a beauty in watching a wild animal in its natural habitat. That’s why we created Lonely Planet’s A-Z of Wildlife Watching. It’s packed with stunning photos, details of each creature’s habits and characteristics, and tips on how to increase the chances of an encounter. Inside, you’ll find all the most iconic animals like lions, tigers, elephants and sharks, but we’ve gone even further than these headline acts to showcase the mind-blowing diversity of the natural world, with other animals including: snow leopards, mountain goats, antelopes, fennec foxes, giant albatrosses, hog-nosed bats, giant clams, corals, whales, wobbegongs, birdwing butterflies and Hercules beetles. Created in consultation with biologist and writer Amy-Jane Beer, and with a foreword by nature photographer Mark Carwardine. Watched by Wild Animals (Classic Reprint) by Enos A. Mills Pdf

Excerpt from Watched by Wild Animals In the wilds, moving or standing, I was the observed of all observers. Although the animals did not know I was coming, generally they were watching for me and observed me without showing themselves. As I sat on a log watching two black bears playing in a woods opening, a faint crack of a stick caused me to look behind. A flock of mountain sheep were watching me only a few steps distant. A little farther away a wildcat sat on a log, also watching me. There probably were other watchers that I did not see. Animals use instinct and reason and also have curiosity - the desire to know. Many of the more wide-awake species do not run panicstricken from the sight or the scent of man. When it is safe they linger to watch him. They also go forth seeking him. Their keen, automatic, constant senses detect him afar, and stealthily, sometimes for hours, they stalk, follow and watch him. I, Mammal by Liam Drew Pdf

Humans are mammals. Most of us appreciate that at some level. But what does it mean for us to have more in common with a horse and an elephant than we do with a parrot, snake or frog? After a misdirected football left new father Liam Drew clutching a uniquely mammalian part of his anatomy, he decided to find out more. Considering himself as a mammal first and a human second, Liam delves into ancient biological history to understand what it means to be mammalian. In his humorous and engaging style, Liam explores the different characteristics that distinguish mammals from other types of animals. He charts the evolution of milk, warm blood and burgeoning brains, and examines the emergence of sophisticated teeth, exquisite ears, and elaborate reproductive biology, plus a host of other mammalian innovations. Entwined are tales of zoological peculiarities and reflections on how being a mammal has shaped the author's life. I, Mammal is a history of mammals and their ancestors and of how science came to grasp mammalian evolution. And in celebrating our mammalian-ness, Liam Drew binds us a little more tightly to the five and a half thousand other species of mammal on this planet and reveals the deep roots of many traits humans hold dear.

The Grizzly, Our Greatest Wild Animal by Enos A. Mills Pdf

Enos A. Mills shares his memories of the bears who had spent years observing them in the wild. He'd follow them not to track and kill them, but to observe and learn their habits. He also rarely, if ever, carried a gun. He was also never threatened by the animals. Excerpt: "One autumn day, while I was watching a little cony stacking hay for the winter, a clinking and rattling of slide rock caught my attention. On the mountain-side opposite me, perhaps a hundred yards away, a grizzly bear was digging in an enormous rock-slide. He worked energetically. Several slabs of rock were hurled out of the hole and tossed down the mountain-side. Stones were thrown right and left. I could not make out what he was after, but it is likely that he was digging for a woodchuck."
