Water Development and Poverty Reduction by I.H. Olcay Ünver,Rajiv K. Gupta,Aysegul Kibaroglu Pdf

In the book's four Parts, the interdisciplinary approach to many issues contributes to the relationship between water and poverty. Part I includes articles on the conceptual and methodological issues concerning poverty reduction through water resources development. It also offers analysis of quantitative measurements of poverty reduction, including some approaches for creating a Water Poverty Index. Part II considers the institutional frameworks for management of water and poverty reduction. Topics range from community-based decision making to international leadership. Part III encompasses discussions on participatory irrigation management and the privatization of urban water supplies and sewerage and the link to poverty. Case studies from India, Turkey, and Jordan make up Part IV. The studies present diverse water management and development practices for poverty reduction, including realistic pricing and effective irrigation practices, the use of water as an engine for sustainable development, small and large scale strategies for reducing the risks and uncertainties in water availability and food security, the economic value of improved water supplies, and the positive impact of small-scale development projects.

Defining and Mainstreaming Environmental Sustainability in Water Resources Management in Southern Africa by Rafik Hirji,Southern African Development Community Pdf

This report is the result of a joint project of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the World Bank, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and the World Conservation Union (Regional Office for Southern Africa) which investigated the threats to precious water resources in southern Africa, and to the environment that sustains them. The full colour, glossy report was intended as a SADC contribution to the United Nations summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002, and to the New Partnership for Africa's Development. The report provides a framework for the sustainable management of water resources, and presents solutions for long-term protection and appropriate utilisation of water in the counties of the region ? the DRC, Angola, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and South Africa. Some key messages that pervade the report are: firstly that the effective and sustainable utilisation and management of water resources are essential prerequisites for sustaining all forms of life and livelihoods, and for fostering overall socio-economic development and poverty reduction in the region; and that moreover, sustainable water resources management must be balanced between the short-term needs of the people and their human development, and the protection of the natural resource base and environment.

Wetlands, agriculture and poverty reduction by McCartney, Matthew,Rebelo, Lisa-Maria,Senaratna Sellamuttu, Sonali,de Silva, Sanjiv Pdf

In many places, growing population, in conjunction with efforts to increase food security, is escalating pressure to expand agriculture within wetlands. The environmental impact of wetland agriculture can have profound social and economic repercussions for people dependent on ecosystem services other than those provided directly by agriculture. If wetlands are not used sustainably, the functions which support agriculture, as well as other food security and ecosystem services, are undermined. This report synthesizes findings from multidisciplinary studies conducted into sustainable wetland agriculture by IWMI and partners in Africa and Asia. It highlights the value of wetland agriculture for poverty reduction as well as the need for more systematic planning that takes into account trade-offs in the multiple services that wetlands provide.

World Water Vision by William J. Cosgrove,Frank R. Rijsberman Pdf

More than a billion people cannot get safe drinking water; half the world's population does not have adequate sanitation; within a generation over three billion will be suffering from water stress. This text analyzes the issues in this crisis of management and shows how water can be used effectively and productively. The key to sustainable water resources is an integrated approach. The authors assert that careful planning and concerted action can make the fundamental changes needed and that the implications of not dealing with the crisis are immense. The book comes with a CD ROM containing background research and scenarios.

Water Challenges in Rural and Urban Sub-Saharan Africa and their Management by Joan Nyika,Megersa Olumana Dinka Pdf

Sub-Saharan Africa grapples with many public health issues such as food insecurity, increased prevalence of infectious diseases, limited access to clean water supply, poor nutrition and lack of improved health services for its populace (IMF, 2021). Of all these challenges, the inaccessibility of clean water supply for both the rural and urban populace is the most pressing challenge, which has been exacerbated by extensive pollution and climate change crises. The issue of water access and supply affects both rural and urban populations. At rural areas water is accessed in yard taps and in arid regions through water kiosks managed by private owners. Among the urban poor, water access is compromised by poor supply infrastructure especially among informal settlers and risks such as contamination during the supply chain are imminent This book therefore seeks to close this knowledge gap by 1) generating a water resources inventory for Sub-Saharan Africa region, 2) exploring the water crises in both its urban and rural settings, 3) understanding the causatives of the crises and 4) suggesting viable solutions to manage the water challenges using named case studies. The aim is to improve understanding on the region’s water problems and advise scholars and policymakers on priority research areas and action plans to better water management for sustainable development.

Keeping the World’s Environment under Review by Jan Bakkes,Marion Cheatle,Nora Mžavanadze,László Pintér,Ronald G. Witt Pdf

How do we take stock of the state and direction of the world’s environment, and what can we learn from the experience? Among the myriad detailed narratives about the condition of the planet, the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) reports—issued by the United Nations Environment Programme—stand out as the most ambitious. For nearly three decades the GEO project has not only delivered iconic global assessment reports, but through its multitude of contributors has inspired hundreds of similar processes worldwide from the regional to the local level. This book provides an inside account of the evolution of the GEO project from its earliest days. Building on meticulous research, including interviews with former heads of the United Nations Environment Programme, diplomats, leading contributing scientists, and senior leaders of collaborating organizations, the story is told from the perspective of five GEO veterans who all played a pivotal role in shaping the periodic assessments. The GEO’s history provides striking insights and will save valuable time to those who commission, design and conduct, as well as critique and improve, assessments of environmental development in the next decade.
