Handing Down the Faith by Christian Smith,Amy Adamczyk Pdf

A new examination of how and why American religious parents seek to pass on religion to their children The most important influence shaping the religious and spiritual lives of children, youth, and teenagers is their parents. A myriad of studies show that the parents of American youth play the leading role in shaping the character of their religious and spiritual lives, even well after they leave home and often for the rest of their lives. We know a lot about the importance of parents in faith transmission. However we know much less about the actual beliefs, feelings, and activities of the parents themselves, what Christian Smith and Amy Adamczyk call the "intergenerational transmission of religious faith and practice." To address that gap, this book reports the findings of a new national study of religious parents in the United States. The findings and conclusions in Handing Down the Faith are based on 215 in-depth, personal interviews with religious parents from many traditions and different parts of the country, and sophisticated analyses of two nationally representative surveys of American parents about their religious parenting. Handing Down the Faith explores the background beliefs informing how and why religious parents seek to pass on religion to their children; examines how parenting styles interact with parent religiousness to shape effective religious transmission; shows how parents have been influenced by their experiences as children influenced by their own parents; reveals how religious parents view their congregations and what they most seek out in a local church, synagogue, temple, or mosque; explores the experiences and outlooks of immigrant parents including Latino Catholics, East Asian Buddhists, South Asian Muslims, and Indian Hindus. Smith and Adamczyk step back to consider how American religion has transformed over the last 100 years and to explain why parents today shoulder such a huge responsibility in transmitting religious faith and practice to their children. The book is rich in empirical evidence and unique in many of the topics it explores and explains, providing a variety of sometimes counterintuitive findings that will interest scholars of religion, social scientists interested in the family, parenting, and socialization; clergy and religious educators and leaders; and religious parents themselves.

We Are Your Children Too by P. O’Connell Pearson,Pearson Pdf

"In 1954, after the passing of Brown v Board, one county in southern Virginia chose to close its public schools rather than integrate. Those public schools stayed closed for five years. This was the reality of the people of Prince Edward County. When the affluent white population of Prince Edward County built a private school-for white children only-they left Black children and their families with very few options. Some Black children were home schooled by unemployed Black teachers. Some traveled thousands of miles to live with relatives, friends, or even strangers. Some didn't go to school at all. But many stood up and became young activists, fighting for one of the rights America claims belongs to all: the right to learn. Revelatory and timely, noted nonfiction author and former educator P. O'Connell Pearson shines a light on this disturbing and important chapter of America's history, with ripple effects that still impact the country to this day"--

We Believe the Children by Richard Beck Pdf

In the 1980s in California, New Jersey, and New York, Michigan, Massachusetts, and Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Ohio, and elsewhere, daycare workers were arrested, charged, tried, and convicted of committing horrible sexual crimes against the children they cared for. These crimes, prosecutors said, had gone undetected for years, and their brutality and sadism defied all imagining. What's more, the abusers had photographed and videotaped their victims, distributing the images through a sophisticated international network of child pornographers. More often than not, violent satanic cult worship had also played a central role, with children made to watch forced abortions in cemeteries and then eat hacked-off bits of the little corpses. In just over a decade, thousands of people in every part of the country were investigated as child sex abusers, and some one-hundred and fifty of them were sent to prison. But, none of it happened. It was an epic decade-long outbreak of collective hysteria – on a par with the Salem witch trials or the red scares of the 1950s. Using extensive archival research conducted in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and elsewhere, and drawing on dozens of interviews conducted with the hysteria's major figures, Richard Beck shows how a group of legislators, doctors, lawyers, and parents, all working with the best of intentions, set the stage for a judicial disaster. A number of opportunistic journalists helped to carry the story from state to state, and the silence of their colleagues, who should have known better, allowed it to keep spreading long after it became clear that the story was simply unsupported by evidence. Beck reveals how a small group of skeptics finally began working to slow the runaway train in the last half of the decade, and he explores the fates of those accused and convicted of these unbelievable crimes, the casualties of a culture war. It is this culture war that is the books pervasive subtext – the conditions that made possible the demented frenzy of accusations were very specific, and at the root of them were competing visions of society and the things that threatened it most.

We Are Our Children's Future by Nancy C. Wilkens Pdf

Nobody talks about common laws anymore. We should because the true balance of power in a Democracy is the distinction between common law and statutory law. Does that balance still exist? No, because with each passing day the principles and values upon which the United States was founded are being eroded. Federal and judicial manipulation has made the Constitution/Bill of Rights nearly irrelevant. As Americans, we are the most powerful citizens in the world. We can choose our own representatives. We can choose to acquire as much knowledge as we desire. We can choose to worship God in our own way. We can choose to turn our ideas into reality. We have opportunities tha went undreamt of before 1776 and unrealized in much of the world today. We have the power to choose an environment that encourages respect and integrity. For 200 years people had the protection of the Constitution/Bill of Rights. We educated our children, we exercised our religion, we had the freedom to speak our minds, we had property rights, we could not be subjected to double jeopardy, and the states had authority. We had common laws. For 200 years we were a people. Times have changed. We have lost that power. States must educate our children in a costly federally mandated manner, our property rights are controlled by tax laws and use constraints, and when and where we choose to exercise our beliefs is governed. We may not voice objections openly or express our opinion unless it is "politically correct." We are tried on the state and federal levels for the same crime, and the states' Constitutional power has been suspended by overreaching federal power. Our common laws and choices are now bound by federal dictate that is enlarged upon by lawyers, courts, bureaucrats, politicians and special interests with every passing day. We have lost our "democratic" privileges and rights. What has this to do with our children? Everything. If we continue to let the government usurp the power of the people, our children will never enjoy the freedoms the Founding Fathers won for us.

Visual Theology by Tim Challies,Josh Byers Pdf

We live in a visual culture. Today, people increasingly rely upon visuals to help them understand new and difficult concepts. The rise and stunning popularity of the Internet infographic has given us a new way in which to convey data, concepts and ideas. But the visual portrayal of truth is not a novel idea. Indeed, God himself used visuals to teach truth to his people. The tabernacle of the Old Testament was a visual representation of man's distance from God and God's condescension to his people. Each part of the tabernacle was meant to display something of man's treason against God and God's kind response. Likewise, the sacraments of the New Testament are visual representations of man's sin and God's response. Even the cross was both reality and a visual demonstration. As teachers and lovers of sound theology, Challies and Byers have a deep desire to convey the concepts and principles of systematic theology in a fresh, beautiful and informative way. In this book, they have made the deepest truths of the Bible accessible in a way that can be seen and understood by a visual generation.
