When Johnny Came Marching Home by William Heffernan Pdf

The international bestselling author of The Corsican delivers “a carefully constructed and evocative Civil War-era tale.” —John Lutz, New York Times–bestselling author When Johnny Came Marching Home is a mystery, a love story, and William Heffernan’s best book to date. The novel tells the story of three boys who grow up in rural Vermont in a seemingly indestructible friendship, then see their lives ruined as they go off to fight in America’s “great and noble war.” Trapped in a what appears to be an endless bloodbath—vividly presented with Heffernan’s meticulous historical research—the boys gradually begin to change until their close-knit childhood ties are little more than a fractured memory. By war’s end, one boy is dead, one returns a physically crippled and emotionally compromised man, and the third comes home as an unfeeling psychopath. The novel turns on the subsequent murder of the psychopath, and the offer of redemption for the wounded young man who must investigate the crime. When Johnny Came Marching Home is a story about war and how it affects the lives of all who become a part of it, both directly and peripherally. Although set during the Civil War, this book casts shadows of what we endure today and the horrors to which young soldiers are subjected. “Heffernan swings his vivid tale back and forth between past and present, war and peace—a neat tour de force he pulls off with admirable assurance.” —Kirkus Reviews “A powerful, intriguing, and complex novel about the intricacies of friendship and the devastating effects of war.” —Jonathan Santlofer, author of The Death Artist

Marching Home: Union Veterans and Their Unending Civil War by Brian Matthew Jordan Pdf

Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History Winner of the Gov. John Andrew Award (Union Club of Boston) An acclaimed, groundbreaking, and “powerful exploration” (Washington Post) of the fate of Union veterans, who won the war but couldn’t bear the peace. For well over a century, traditional Civil War histories have concluded in 1865, with a bitterly won peace and Union soldiers returning triumphantly home. In a landmark work that challenges sterilized portraits accepted for generations, Civil War historian Brian Matthew Jordan creates an entirely new narrative. These veterans— tending rotting wounds, battling alcoholism, campaigning for paltry pensions— tragically realized that they stood as unwelcome reminders to a new America eager to heal, forget, and embrace the freewheeling bounty of the Gilded Age. Mining previously untapped archives, Jordan uncovers anguished letters and diaries, essays by amputees, and gruesome medical reports, all deeply revealing of the American psyche. In the model of twenty-first-century histories like Drew Gilpin Faust’s This Republic of Suffering or Maya Jasanoff ’s Liberty’s Exiles that illuminate the plight of the common man, Marching Home makes almost unbearably personal the rage and regret of Union veterans. Their untold stories are critically relevant today.

When Johnny Comes Marching Home by Mildred Aldrich Pdf

Mildred Aldrich was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1853. After graduating from Everett High School in 1872, she taught elementary school in Boston, Massachusetts. Aldrich began her career as a journalist with the Boston Home Journal and later contributed to Arena and the Boston Herald. For a short period in 1892, she also edited the magazine, The Mahogany Tree. In 1898, Aldrich moved to France and while living in Paris became a close friend of Gertrude Stein. Aldrich worked as a foreign correspondent and newspaper critic until retiring to Huiry, a village on the outskirts of Paris. She wrote to Stein in June 1914: "It will be the bloodiest affair the world has ever seen - a war in the air, under the sea as well as on it, and carried out with the most effective man-slaughtering machines ever used in battle." During the First World War, Aldrich wrote A Hilltop on the Marne (1915), a book based on her journal entries (3rd June - 8th September 1914) and on letters she wrote to Gertrude Stein. The book sold well in the United States and she followed it with On the Edge of the War Zone (1917), The Peak of the Load (1918) and When Johnny Comes Marching Home (1919). The French government believed that Aldrich's work helped persuade the US government to declare war on Germany and in 1922 was awarded the Legion of Honour. Mildred Aldrich died in Huiry, France, on 19th February, 1928. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in Boston, Small, Maynard and Company, 1919. Morristown by John W. Rae Pdf

Morristown, New Jersey first earned its place in history during the Revolutionary War when General George Washington camped here with the Continental army, an event that led to the founding of the first National Historic Park in 1933. Morristown preserves history while keeping up with the times, often forging ahead of the pack and into the future. The Green-once a grazing ground for sheep and cattle-became the site of the first Morris County Courthouse and is still a thriving central gathering place for townspeople. Even many of the Morristown's municipal buildings tell of a past steeped in the Gilded Age, as today's citizens walk the halls once trod by millionaires. Morristown: A Military Headquarters of the American Revolution chronicles the many famous people connected to the area such as Benedict Arnold, who was tried here for treason. A landmark event of the communication industry also occurred here when Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail perfected the magnetic telegraph in a barn. This new volume invites readers for a ride through the past, with glimpses into the lives of one of the world's richest and least-known colonies of wealthy people, the hidden drama and sometime romance of a Revolutionary army camp, and the secret network of tunnels dug beneath the city during Prohibition.

The Museum Called Canada by Charlotte Gray,Sara Angel Pdf

Hold our history in your hands, with a spectacular virtual museum that is at once a sweeping exploration of Canadian history and culture, an indispensable reference guide and a remarkable treasury of information. Welcome to a museum so vast and full of wonder that it could only be called Canada. Each of The Museum Called Canada's 25 rooms houses carefully chosen exhibits that illuminate a significant historical theme. This majestic collection brings together high art and popular culture, science and nature, rare objects and whimsical ephemera. Here you will see the empty eye sockets of Tyrannosaurus Rex and be able to examine intricate and ethereal wood-carved angels built for Quebec's Rideau Chapel. Exhibits span the breadth of our nation, from the Yuquot Whaler's Shrine of Vancouver Island's Nootka to an anti-Confederation poster from the controversially soon-to-be-province Newfoundland. Your guide to the collection is historian and author Charlotte Gray. For each room in the museum, Gray has written a short essay that delves into the world of a particularly evocative artifact and its importance in the context of the room's theme and time period. The Museum Called Canada -- with its expansive vision, its surprising juxtapositions, its visual feasts and intellectual explorations -- is a beautiful and inspiring place that you will want to visit again and again.
