Understanding the Women of Mozart's Operas by Kristi Brown-Montesano Pdf

Is The Marriage of Figaro just about Figaro? Is Don Giovanni’s story the only one—or even the most interesting one—in the opera that bears his name? For generations of critics, historians, and directors, it’s Mozart’s men who have mattered most. Too often, the female characters have been understood from the male protagonist’s point of view or simply reduced on stage (and in print) to paper cutouts from the age of the powdered wig and the tightly cinched corset. It’s time to give Mozart’s women—and Mozart’s multi-dimensional portrayals of feminine character—their due. In this lively book, Kristi Brown-Montesano offers a detailed exploration of the female roles in Mozart’s four most frequently performed operas, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte, and Die Zauberflöte. Each chapter takes a close look at the music, libretto text, literary sources, and historical factors that give shape to a character, re-evaluating common assumptions and proposing fresh interpretations. Brown-Montesano views each character as the subject of a story, not merely the object of a hero’s narrative or the stock figure of convention. From amiable Zerlina, to the awesome Queen of the Night, to calculating Despina, all of Mozart’s women have something unique to say. These readings also tackle provocative social, political, and cultural issues, which are used in the operas to define positive and negative images of femininity: revenge, power, seduction, resistance, autonomy, sacrifice, faithfulness, class, maternity, and sisterhood. Keenly aware of the historical gap between the origins of these works and contemporary culture, Brown-Montesano discusses how attitudes about such concepts—past and current—influence our appreciation of these fascinating representations of women.

Mozart and His Operas by David Cairns Pdf

David Cairns weaves a brilliantly engaging narrative which puts Mozart’s operas in the context of his life, showing how they illuminate his creativity as a whole. Mozart’s unusual childhood as a musical prodigy touring Europe as a performer from an early age is well known. But even more remarkable is that the genius grew up, surviving his unnatural early years and producing works of increasing maturity and originality. Using the operas as his guide, Cairns traces the steady deepening of Mozart’s musical style from his beginnings as a child prodigy, through his coming of age with what Cairns sees as the most Romantic and forward-looking of all Mozart’s operas, Idomeneo, the later genius displayed in the three comic operas, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte, and in The Magic Flute, the final and greatest triumph of his career.

Mozart's Operas by Daniel Heartz Pdf

Renowned Mozart scholar Daniel Heartz brings his deep knowledge of social history, theater, and art to a study of the last and great decade of Mozart's operas. Mozart specialists will recognize some of Heartz's best-known essays here; but six pieces are new for the collection, and others have been revised and updated with little-known documents on the librettist's, composer's, and stage director's craft. All lovers of opera will value the elegance and wit of Professor Heartz's writing, enhanced by thirty-seven illustrations, many from his private collection. The volume includes Heartz's classic essay on Idomeneo (1781), the work that continued to inspire and sustain Mozart through his next, and final, six operas. Thomas Bauman brings his special expertise to a discussion of Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1782). The ten central chapters are devoted to the three great operas composed to librettos by Lorenzo da Ponte—Le nozze di Figaro (l786), Don Giovanni (l787), and Così fan tutte (l790). The reader is treated to fresh insights on da Ponte's role as Mozart's astute and stage-wise collaborator, on the singers whose gifts helped shape each opera, and on the musical connections among the three works. Parallels are drawn with some of the greatest creative artists in other fields, such as Molière, Watteau, and Fragonard. The world of the dance, one of Heartz's specialties, lends an illuminating perspective as well. Finally, the essays discuss the deep spirituality of Mozart's last two operas, Die Zauberflöte and La Clemenza di Tito (both l79l). They also address the pertinence of opera outside Vienna at the end of the century, the fortunes and aspirations of Freemasonry in Austria, and the relation of Mozart's overtures to the dramaturgy of the operas.

Mozart's Operas; a Critical Study by Edward Joseph Dent Pdf

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ...individuality, such as it is, is exhibited in the aria with which the opera opens; then when Don Giovanni and Donna Anna hold the scene, he sinks into the background, and his rapidly reiterated notes, so far from expressing fear, as has been suggested, merely serve to remind us of his presence, and give a touch of the grotesque, as they do throughout the opera. Let those who think the quaver figure represents fear sing through Leporello's part by itself, without the others, and judge of the effect. Leporello's fright does not become evident until just before the duel begins, that is, at the moment when his own life is obviously in danger: --The theme, it will be noticed, has a close resemblance to certain phrases in the aria "Ah! pieta, signori miei," which he sings after the great sextet in the second act. Moreover, Mozart shows us here that the theme is important by making the orchestra play it in unison, so that it stands out against the dialogue of the Commendatore and Don Giovanni. We may note too, along with this, the theme which accompanies Don Giovanni's first words to his adversary, a theme which is suggested later on when the Statue speaks to Don Giovanni in the cemetery. Another significant use of a previous theme appears in the terzetto after the duel; Don Giovanni, speaking of the dying Commendatore.uses the same melodic phrase that Donna Anna hurls at Don Giovanni when she refuses to let him go. It would be a mistake to label such themes as examples of leitmotiv, but if we have accustomed ourselves to observing this procedure in modern music, we shall find that it is equally worth while keeping our ears open for it in Mozart. It is interesting to compare the way in which the two composers have treated the death of...

Recognition in Mozart's Operas by Jessica Waldoff Pdf

'Recognition in Mozart's Operas' is a thoughful treatise that uses both literary and musicological methods to illuminate some of Mozart's best-loved operas. Waldoff argues that, rather than offering the simple happy endings or tragic climaxes of 'easier' operas, many of Mozart's work features scenes of recognition-moments.

Mozart's Operas by Edward Joseph Dent Pdf

Originally published in 1913 when most of Mozart's operas were still almost completely unknown in Britain and America, the author's classic study is now reissued in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Mozart's death. Thoroughly revised in 1947, and now featuring a new introduction by one of today's most distinguished opera scholars, Winton Dean, this volume offers a whole new generation of readers access to the seminal work on Mozart's opera. Dent was fundamental in reviving interest in the great composer's opera, and his translations of the librettos did much to popularize them with English-speaking audiences. For each of the major operas Dent examines its composition, explores the background of its libretto, provides a synopsis of its plot, analyzes its music, and offers a lively discussion of the work's public reception. In addition, he blends his study of the operas with much biographical detail, shedding light not only on the composer and the opera of his time, but on the whole eighteenth-century world of music in which Mozart thrived. Anyone interested in opera in general and Mozart in particular will find this book indispensable.

Mozart's Operas by Edward Joseph Dent Pdf

Excerpt from Mozart's Operas This book has been written with a double purpose: first, to present Mozart's principal operas as still living works to modern audiences; and, secondly, to draw from them illustrations of certain points of view from which music in general and opera in particular may be considered. These ideas have in the present work received no more than a summary indication, and I hope later on to find an opportunity of treating them more in detail. The first chapter deals mainly with principles of musical appreciation. Chapter II gives a survey of Mozart's early operas and his relation to his century, after which the more important operas are discussed at greater length. I have been careful in each case to give an account of the plot in as concise a form as possible. Quotations of music from Mozart's operas have as a rule been avoided, since cheap editions are easily available, but an exception has been made in favour of "Idomeneo," since that work is comparatively little known, even to Mozart enthusiasts. On the other hand, a number of examples have been given from the works of Mozart's contemporaries, which are for the most part extant only in manuscript or in early printed editions. Mozart's Marriage of Figaro by Michael Steen Pdf

Although the story of Figaro's success in preventing the Count of Almaviva's seduction of his fiancée Susanna was politically explosive, it was tolerated in the court of the relatively enlightened Habsburg Emperor Joseph II. Mozart's opera, Le Nozze di Figaro, uses a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, and was premièred in Vienna in 1786. It was based on a famous play by the Frenchman Beaumarchais, a sequel to The Barber of Seville. Characters including Figaro, the Countess, Cherubino the page, Doctor Bartolo and Barberina the gardener's daughter sing a succession of famous arias – such as Se vuol ballare, Non più andrai, Dove sono, Porgi amor and Voi, che sapete, to mention but a few – in which Mozart's musical characterisation is legendary. Written by Michael Steen, author of the acclaimed The Lives and Times of the Great Composers, 'Short Guides to Great Operas' are concise, entertaining and easy to read books about opera. Each is an opera guide packed with useful information and informed opinion, helping to make you a truly knowledgeable opera-goer, and so maximising your enjoyment of a great musical experience. Other 'Short Guides to Great Operas' that you may enjoy include Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni and The Barber of Seville.

The Culture of Opera Buffa in Mozart's Vienna by Mary Hunter Pdf

Mozart's comic operas are among the masterworks of Western civilization, and yet the musical environment in which Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte wrote these now-popular operas has received little critical attention. In this richly detailed book, Mary Hunter offers a sweeping, synthetic view of opera buffa in the lively theatrical world of late-eighteenth-century Vienna. Opera buffa (Italian-language comic opera) persistently entertained audiences at a time when Joseph was striving for a German national theater. Hunter attributes opera buffa's success to its ability to provide "sheer" pleasure and hence explores how the genre functioned as entertainment. She argues that opera buffa, like mainstream film today, projects a social world both recognizable and distinct from reality. It raises important issues while containing them in the "merely entertaining" frame of the occasion, as well as presenting them as a series of easily identifiable dramatic and musical conventions. Exploring nearly eighty comic operas, Hunter shows how the arias and ensembles convey a multifaceted picture of the repertory's social values and habits. In a concluding chapter, she discusses Cos" fan tutte as a work profoundly concerned with the conventions of its repertory and with the larger idea of convention itself and reveals the ways Mozart and da Ponte pointedly converse with their immediate contemporaries.

Mozart's Così Fan Tutte by Michael Steen Pdf

A couple of smooth army officers in metropolitan Naples become increasingly horrified as they find that they are losing their bet with a misogynist philosopher. The wager? That their fiancées will be faithful. Their disguise as Albanians in an attempt to entrap their fiancées, and the complicity of the naughty maid, who feigns as a lawyer organising their ‘marriage’, provide hilarious moments in an opera full of favourite tunes. Lorenzo da Ponte’s libretto was long considered indecent and unsuitable to stage. But today it is regarded as providing one of the greatest illustrations of Mozart’s art of musical characterisation, even if the story is somewhat politically incorrect. The ways in which Mozart’s music contrasts the two ‘provincial’ sisters, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, and presents their capitulation, can justify his reputation as possibly the greatest classical composer of all time. Written by Michael Steen, author of the acclaimed The Lives and Times of the Great Composers, ‘Short Guides to Great Operas’ are concise, entertaining and easy to read books about opera. Each is an opera guide packed with useful information and informed opinion, helping to make you a truly knowledgeable opera-goer, and so maximising your enjoyment of a great musical experience.
