The Encyclopedia of Christian Literature by George Thomas Kurian,James D. Smith Pdf

The written word is one of the defining elements of Christian experience. As vigorous in the 1st century as it is in the 21st, Christian literature has had a significant function in history, and teachers and students need to be reminded of this powerful literary legacy. Covering 2,000 years, The Encyclopedia of Christian Literature is the first encyclopedia devoted to Christian writers and books. In addition to an overview of the Christian literature, this two-volume set also includes 40 essays on the principal genres of Christian literature and more than 400 bio-bibliographical essays describing the principal writers and their works. These essays examine the evolution of Christian thought as reflected in the literature of every age. The companion volume also features bibliographies, an index, a timeline of Christian Literature, and a list of the greatest Christian authors. The encyclopedia will appeal not only to scholars and Christian evangelicals, but students and teachers in seminaries and theological schools, as well as to the growing body of Christian readers and bibliophiles.

The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature: Volume 4, 1900-1950 by George Watson,I. R. Willison Pdf

More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 4 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Reconciling Science and Religion by Peter J. Bowler Pdf

Although much has been written about the vigorous debates over science and religion in the Victorian era, little attention has been paid to their continuing importance in early twentieth-century Britain. Reconciling Science and Religion provides a comprehensive survey of the interplay between British science and religion from the late nineteenth century to World War II. Peter J. Bowler argues that unlike the United States, where a strong fundamentalist opposition to evolutionism developed in the 1920s (most famously expressed in the Scopes "monkey trial" of 1925), in Britain there was a concerted effort to reconcile science and religion. Intellectually conservative scientists championed the reconciliation and were supported by liberal theologians in the Free Churches and the Church of England, especially the Anglican "Modernists." Popular writers such as Julian Huxley and George Bernard Shaw sought to create a non-Christian religion similar in some respects to the Modernist position. Younger scientists and secularists—including Rationalists such as H. G. Wells and the Marxists—tended to oppose these efforts, as did conservative Christians, who saw the liberal position as a betrayal of the true spirit of their religion. With the increased social tensions of the 1930s, as the churches moved toward a neo-orthodoxy unfriendly to natural theology and biologists adopted the "Modern Synthesis" of genetics and evolutionary theory, the proposed reconciliation fell apart. Because the tensions between science and religion—and efforts at reconciling the two—are still very much with us today, Bowler's book will be important for everyone interested in these issues.

The Letters of T. S. Eliot Volume 5: 1930-1931 by John Haffenden,T. S. Eliot,Valerie Eliot Pdf

The letters between Eliot and his associates, family and friends - his correspondents range from the Archbishop of York and the American philosopher Paul Elmer More to the writers Virginia Woolf, Herbert Read and Ralph Hodgson - serve to illuminate the ways in which his Anglo-Catholic convictions could, at times, prove a self-chastising and even alienating force. 'Anyone who has been moving among intellectual circles and comes to the Church, may experience an odd and rather exhilarating feeling of isolation,' he remarks. Notwithstanding, he becomes fully involved in doctrinal controversy: he espouses the Church as an arena of discipline and order.Eliot's relationship with his wife, Vivien, continues to be turbulent, and at times desperate, as her mental health deteriorates and the communication between husband and wife threatens, at the coming end of the year, to break down completely. At the close of this volume Eliot will accept a visiting professorship at Harvard University, which will take him away from England and Vivien for the academic year 1932-33.

The City, Second Edition by James A. Clapp Pdf

The City is the best, funniest, saddest, and most thought-provoking compilation ever assembled on the urban scene. James A. Clapp has arranged more than three thousand quotations--epigrams, epithets, verses, proverbs, scriptural references, witticisms, lyrics, literary references, and historical observations--on urban life from antiquity until the present. These quotes are drawn from the written and spoken words of more than one thousand writers throughout history. This volume, with contributions from speakers, poets, song writers, politicians philosophers, scientists, religious leaders, historians, social scientists, humorists, architects, journalists, and travelers from and to many lands is designed to be used by writers, speechmakers, students, and scholars on cities and urban life. Clapp's text is striking for its sharp contrasts of urban and rural life and the urbanization process in different historical times and geographical areas. This second edition includes four hundred new entries, updated birth dates and occupations of quoted authors, and an expanded and updated introduction and preface. Clapp also added new introduction pages for each section containing pictures and unique quotations. The indexes have also been expanded to include more subjects and cities. The scope of this book is international, including entries on most major and many minor cities of the world. It is noteworthy for its pleasures and as well as its insights.

Dismembering the Male by Joanna Bourke Pdf

Some historians contend that femininity was "disrupted, constructed and reconstructed" during World War I, but what happened to masculinity? Using the evidence of letters, diaries, and oral histories of members of the military and of civilians, as well as contemporary photographs and government propoganda, Dismembering the Male explores the impact of the First World War on the male body. Each chapter explores a different facet of the war and masculinity in depth. Joanna Bourke discovers that those who were dismembered and disabled by the war were not viewed as passive or weak, like their civilian counterparts, but were the focus of much government and public sentiment. Those suffering from disease were viewed differently, often finding themselves accused of malingering. Joanna Bourke argues convincingly that military experiences led to a greater sharing of gender identities between men of different classes and ages. Dismembering the Male concludes that ultimately, attempts to reconstruct a new type of masculinity failed as the threat of another war, and with it the sacrifice of a new generation of men, intensified.

Freedom From America by Robert Corfe Pdf

Anti-Americanism has now become an imperative for the sanity and stability of the world. Over the past 30 years almost every foreign adventure of the US has led to failure in compounding existing problems, and after the withdrawal of her forces, conditions have been left worse than when she intervened. Added to that is the resistance of her government to recognise the reality of global warming, and most recently, blundering policies have instigated a series of unexpected terrorist outrages on innocent victims which have made the world a more dangerous place. There are many justifications for anti-Americanism, but there is one which rises about all others: viz., a financial-industrial system which clashes with the long traditions of the social democracies in Europe and the Far East. Two incompatible capitalist systems have emerged amongst the advanced industrial economies in the post-War period: the Rentier capitalism of the US, and the Productive capitalism of Europe and the Far East. Each is guided by its own ideology, the Neo-liberalism of America versus the social democracy (a broad term transcending party politics) of Europe and the Far East Tiger economies. With America emerging as the clear victor of the Cold War in 1989, her government and corporations have been sufficiently confident to impose their financial-industrial system on the rest of the world, and this is proving disastrous to the social democratic consensus and welfare polices built up since 1945 and before. The argument is propagated that the European is no longer viable, and must therefore surrender to the American way and globalisation, but this is shown to be a fiction invented by US policy makers. There is an in-depth analysis of American culture which explains its political system, and the US is revealed to be very far from a true democracy. It is in Europe and elsewhere where the ideals of democracy, justice and equity are best promoted. The final chapters home-in on a European resolution to the most difficult problems of our time, viz., the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and how to de-fuse the causes of Terror. The book is an appeal for the cause of civilisation, social justice and equity for all humanity.

The Wit and Wisdom of G K Chesterton by Bevis Hillier Pdf

G. K. Chesterton was a consummately witty man. In this new collection, Bevis Hillier draws on his most humorous epigrams and more serious extracts not only from his most popular works, the Father Brown stories, but also his contributions to the Illustrated London News and GK's Weekly, as well as his numerous novels, poems, essays and tracts on a vast array of subjects. These pieces shine a light into the margins of Chesterton's work and give a sense of the distinctive flavour of his mind. Hillier, the acclaimed biographer of John Betjeman, considers what it was that made Chesterton such a complex and fascinating character. Some of Chesterton's remarkable drawings (he trained as an artist at the Slade) are included, among them a hitherto unpublished caricature of Winston Churchill, c. 1919. This is a book for Chesterton fans everywhere.
