Women at the Siege, Peking 1900 by Susanna Hoe Pdf

"The Boxer uprising; the siege of the legations; 55 days in Peking; foreign troops looting China's capital; these are images from books and films over the past 100 years. Now the story is told from the women's point of view, using their previously neglected writings and giving a new dimension. This is the author's fourth book about foreign women and China. It adds to the essential body of women's history and gives a truer picture of what happened a century ago." --

This riveting account of a good woman continuing her vocational work despite every adversity will absorb those interested Women missionaries, the China of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the turbulent time of the Boxers. Gamewell was already an 'old China' hand by 1900. She had experienced the Chungking Riot of 1886 and knew well the dangers which could beset Europeans in her position. Her view of the siege of Peking itself will interest any student of the subject. Available in soft cover or hard back with dust jacket.

A Brief History of the Boxer Rebellion by Diana Preston Pdf

This is an account of the ferocious uprising of Chinese peasants and the ensuing siege of Peking in the summer of 1900 - a 55-day confrontation between the Boxers (so-called for their martial-arts skills) and the Westerners they terrorized. The drama of this bloody battle is conveyed here through records of the personal experiences of trapped people in Peking, of missionary women confronted by Boxer mobs, chased from village to village, then savagely murdered, as well as those more fortunate, who were able to escape.

I tell you we are boiling, and long for relief, not only to get out of our (to-day) very tight fix indeed, but also for an awful and just revenge on these unprincipled murderers. At 11.30 came the news that the Nan Tang (S. Cathedral) was on fire, a building 278 years old, and of great historical interest, containing as it did a Memorial Tablet given to the Cathedral by the Emperor Kang Hsi. It was l miles from our Legation towards the tlsuin Chi Men, but for fear of weakening the Legation defence, they dare not send immediate help. Bishop Scott's (except the church and dwellinghouse, which went next day) burnt and looted. At 12.45 Capt. Wray captured a Boxer, and he was put in our cells. He was unarmed, or he would have been shot at once. It was a pity he was'nt, as the boys and Mafus, etc., in the Legation thought he could breathe fire and harm the Legations when bound, and many left. He came out to the North Bridge kowtowing and making idiotic gestures and said he was going to buy food. Two disgraceful Edicts were published condoning the Boxers.'" Another Council of War was held. At 7, the Germans on the Tartar City wall, seeing a meeting of Boxers outside the wall, fired from the wall and killed 10 odd, dispersing the rest. This started the most terrific yelling I have ever heard, you cannot conceive the row, and the yells of "Sha," "Sha" (Kill! Kill!), etc., lasted till 11.30, but the Chien Men and the Ha-ta Men were shut, and they could not get in. The Americans and Russians caught a man setting fire to Legation Street. Two large fires were reported from our south stable picket, where I went up to have a look out. I had just left and got to the Ping Gate, when I heard firing from our north picket. The Boxers had...

The Boxers, China, and the World by Robert Bickers,R. G. Tiedemann Pdf

In 1900, China chose to take on imperialism by fighting a war with the world on the parched north China plain. This multidisciplinary volume explores the causes behind what is now known as the Boxer War, examining its particular cruelties and its impact on China, foreign imperialism in China, and on the foreign imagination. This war introduced the world to the "Boxers," the seemingly fanatical, violent xenophobes who, believing themselves invulnerable to foreign bullets, died in their thousands in front of foreign guns. But 1900 also saw the imperialism of the 1890s checked and the Qing rulers of China move to embark on a series of shattering reforms. The Boxers have often been represented as a force from China's past, resisting an enforced modernity. Here, expert contributors argue that this rebellion was instead a wholly modern resistance to globalizing power, representing new trends in modern China and in international relations. The allied invasion of north China in late summer 1900 was the first multinational intervention in the name of "civilization," with the issues and attendant problems that have become all too familiar in the early twenty-first century. Indeed, understanding the Boxer rising and the Boxer war remains a pressing contemporary issue. This volume will appeal to readers interested in modern Chinese, East Asian, and European history as well as the history of imperialism, colonialism, warfare, missionary work, and Christianity. Contributions by: C. A. Bayly, Lewis Bernstein, Robert Bickers, Paul A. Cohen, Henrietta Harrison, James L. Hevia, Ben Middleton, T. G. Otte, Roger R. Thompson, R. G. Tiedemann, and Anand A. Yang.

Siege Days by Mrs. A. H. Mateer Pdf

Excerpt from Siege Days: Personal Experiences of American Women and Children During the Peking Siege We have received wonderful mercies. The larger ones have already been given to the world, but not the countless little ones that made up our daily life during that summer of 1900. Let us gather up these fragments, after the great miracle, that nothing be lost. Let us record them now lest we forget. The plan is that every lady and child among the American missionaries should write on some subject. Of course, children are not limited to any subject. Let their little hands pick up all the crumbs they can. Some will object that enough books have already been writ ten ou the siege, as they have, on the causes of the uprising, its statistics, diaries of the siege, etc. But nothing exactly like this. This is to give the small details of daily life, a record of little daily mercies, which cannot but be interesting to Chris tian women, and which would otherwise die in oblivion. Let us all pray for the blessing of God upon the book, that His name may be glorified by it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
