In the summer of 2000, archaeological excavations on the periphery of the Roman 'small town' at Worcester revealed extensive evidence for timber-framed buildings, probably representing the lower status homes of some of the settlement's inhabitants. This volume presents the results of the dig, setting it in the context of increasing archaeological investigation of Roman Worcester, which together is transforming our understanding of the settlement.

Worcestershire Murders by Nicola Sly Pdf

Worcestershire Murders brings together numerous murderous tales, some which were little known outside the county, and others which made national headlines. Contained within the pages of this book are the stories behind some of the most heinous crimes ever committed in Worcestershire. They include the murders of the entire Gummery family at Berrow in 1780; Catherine Gulliver, killed by John Butler at Ombersley in 1864; and Maria Holmes, slain by her husband at Bromsgrove in 1872. Cases from the twentieth century include two unsolved murders - the body of an unidentified woman found in a tree in Hagley Wood in 1943, and the brutal killing of Florrie Porter at Lickey End in 1944. Nicola Sly's carefully researched and enthralling text will appeal to anyone interested in the shady side of Worcestershire's history.

A Practitioner’s Guide to Ancillary Orders in Criminal Courts by Elaine Freer Pdf

"This book provides a clear analysis of those possibilities [created by the myriad of ancillary orders] and is to be welcomed: it will help judges and practitioners navigate the complex landscape that the law has created. [It] sets out the criteria and law surrounding orders and explains them clearly and in detail: it addresses an often overlooked area of the law but one that it is essential we understand and apply correctly." Sir Brian Leveson, President of the Queen's Bench Division, Head of Criminal Justice – in his Foreword to the book Ancillary orders often involve nuanced application of detailed law. Combined with the huge variety of situations to which they apply and ways in which they operate, the scope for error when working with them is high. This is the only guide to the law, application and analysis relating to Ancillary Orders, available to criminal courts, helping you to mitigate risk for your clients. A Practitioner's Guide to Ancillary Orders in Criminal Courts covers orders available on acquittal, such as Restraining Orders and Defence Costs Orders, as well as those only available on conviction, such as Compensation Orders and Directors' Disqualification Orders, with each Order set out in a self-contained chapter. As such, the law and precedent applying to that particular type of Order is simple to access. Legislation and case law covered includes: Powers of Criminal Courts (Sentencing) Act 2000 Prosecution of Offences Act 1985 Protection from Harassment Act 1997 Sexual Offences Act 2003 Serious Crime Act 2007 Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 Firearms Act 1968 Company Directors' Disqualification Act 1986 Costs: Lord Howard of Lympne v DPP SHPOs: Cheyne, Connor SCPOs: Hancox and Duffy Driving disqualification: Needham Directors' disqualification: Cadman In addition to providing guidance on and analysis of those Orders, this book also sets out the consequences of breaches. Update on PFI Debt Refinancing and the PFI Equity Market by Great Britain: National Audit Office Pdf

Findings from this NAO report include that the government has secured gains of £137 million from Private Finance Initiative (PFI) debt refinancings under new arrangements introduced by the Treasury in 2002 (including £102 million from four large refinancings (one of the London Underground contracts and three hospital projects: Norfolk and Norwich, Darent Valley and Bromley). The NAO found that the new sharing arrangements through a voluntary Code appear to be generally working well but there have been exceptions, for example in three road projects the public sector missed out on at least £1.7 million because gains were not shared in accordance with the voluntary code. The report also describes the emergence of the PFI secondary market which is enabling equity investors in PFI projects to sell their shares on to new investors.

Psychology and Crime by Francis Pakes,Jane Winstone Pdf

Society today is fascinated by crime. Crime is a hot topic in the media, so that people are continually exposed to criminal events, portrayals of those who commit them, and the suffering of victims. Yet the reality of crime is often very different from how it is portrayed in the media. Most crime is neither violent nor morbid; most offenders are not psychopaths, and although prison generally does not work, there may well be other, less punitive but more constructive interventions that are actually quite effective. This book exposes some of the most prevalent myths about crime and criminal behaviour. In addition it provides the reader with up-to-date knowledge on crime and offending behaviour. It also highlights the ways in which psychological methods of research and psychological knowledge can help us to understand criminal behaviour and the ways that targeted interventions are developed based upon this. Pakes' and Winstone's Psychology and Crime is essential reading for students taking courses in the psychology of crime, criminal and forensic psychology, criminology, and community justice, as well as for other courses where a knowledge of the complex relationship between psychology and crime - and its application in practice - is required. Practitioners and policy-makers will also find it highly informative.
