World Tariff Profiles 2006 by World Trade Organization Pdf

Numbers play a fundamental role in key areas of trade negotiations. They are the alpha and the omega of any tariff-reduction agreement. They provide the starting point for discussion, and after long and often difficult reformulations - as numbers are tabled and pondered - the process finally ends with a deal. Perhaps more than in any previous multilateral round of trade negotiations, "tariffs" and "formulas" are at the core of the Doha negotiations. Up to now, access to these data was cumbersome and limited to a closed circle of trade specialists. The present publication is an important step forward. It provides a comprehensive picture of tariff profiles from around the world in an abridged format. This information is essential for the current round of negotiations in the field of market access. With the joint effort of the WTO, UNCTAD and ITC, the reader will find in a single and comprehensive document the main tariff parameters for each of the 150 WTO members. A special effort was made also to include other countries and customs territories, to include ad valorem equivalents, and to ensure international comparability of the indicators. The description of the tariffs imposed by each economy on its imports is complemented with an analysis of the market access conditions it faces in its major export markets. This new publication, which will be updated on a yearly basis.

Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report 2016 by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Pdf

The Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report (APTIR) is a major annual publication of the Trade, Investment and Innovation Division of United Nations ESCAP. It aims to deepen understanding of trends and developments in trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region; emerging issues in trade, investment and trade facilitation policies, and impacts of these policies on countries' abilities to meet the challenges of achieving inclusive and sustainable development. It offers innovative policy options to meet the challenges of achieving sustainable trade and investment. APTIR 2016 shows that 2015-2016 has been a worrying period for trade and investment n the Asia-Pacific region and worldwide, and there are few signs that the current economic and trade slowdown is simply a temporary phenomenon. Instead, this pattern may be the result of a change in the fundamental structure of world trade, which might lead to a persistent trade stagnation. On the other hand, good progress was made, especially at the regional level, with furthering cross-border paperless trade as one of the approached to deal with the upward pressure on the trade costs. Special feature of this volume is a chapter on digital trade in Asia-Pacific. Accepting the rising importance of e-commerce as a new trade platform, there is opening for the possible changes in the focus of trade and investment policies in order to leverage the potential of e-commerce to support intraregional trade.

Canada and the European Union by Selen Sarisoy Guerin,Chris Napoli Pdf

This paper argues that there are significant potential economic gains to be obtained from an EU-Canada Free Trade Agreement. The evolution of trade between the US and Canada following the signing of CUSFTA in 1989 offers a good illustration of how trade might increase after an EU-Canada FTA, as the patterns and levels of protection between the EU and Canada today are very similar to the protection that existed between the US and Canada in 1989. Although many empirical studies fail to find support for 'trade diversion' created by NAFTA (or CUSFTA) at the expense of the EU and to the benefit of the US, there is some evidence of trade diversion when detailed regional trade is examined. If indeed trade diversion has occurred due to NAFTA, then an EU-Canada FTA is welfare-enhancing for Canada. For the EU, a potential FTA can level the playing field with the US and increase the competitiveness of European firms in the Canadian market.
