Writing in a Bilingual Program by Carole Edelsky Pdf

A year-long study of the writing development of 27 first through third graders in an English/Spanish bilingual program was conducted during the 1980-81 school year. Samples of the children's writing were collected at four intervals, coded for computer tallying, and analyzed in terms of code-switching, spelling, punctuation and segmentation, structural features, stylistic devices, and content. Additionally, the context in which the writing developed was evaluated by classroom observations, teacher interviews, review of familial backgrounds, and a survey of the community language situation. Myths about bilingual language proficiency, biliteracy, bilingual education, teaching writing, and learning to write are all countered by evidence presented in this study. In a discussion of implications, the concept of a whole language approach to writing instruction is supported, in which authentic and functional texts are offered to and produced by children. Examples of the children's writing with appropriate translations are given along with various tables. Informal follow-up information is presented in three epilogues dealing with changes in the researcher's commitment to the study's original writing theories, the writing of some students a year after the study; and a chronological outline of the demise of the bilingual program used in the study. Appendices list interview questions used for teachers and aides and categories for coding the writing data. This book contains 134 references. (ALL)

English in Elementary Schools by Anja Steinlen Pdf

An increasing number of multilingual students, often with a migration background, are attending elementary schools in Germany these days. Also on the rise is the number of schools offering a bilingual program, where content subjects such as science and mathematics are taught in a foreign language. This book explores minority and majority language students' German and English reading and writing skills in elementary schools which offer either regular English-as-subject lessons or bilingual programs with varying degrees of English intensity. The focus is on effects of foreign language input intensity with respect to students' language background, gender, cognitive abilities, and socio-economic background. This book also provides recommendations for English reading and writing activities in the elementary school classroom.

Multilingual Literacies by Marilyn Martin-Jones,Kathryn E. Jones Pdf

The research in this unique collection lies at the interface between the fields of bilingualism and literacy. It deepens our understanding of the significance of reading and writing as social practices and opens up new lines of inquiry for research on multilingualism. The authors incorporate theoretical and methodological insights from both fields and provide detailed accounts of everyday practices of reading and writing in different multilingual settings. The focus is primarily on linguistic minority groups in Britain and on the language and literacy experiences of children and adults in rural and urban communities. Together, the chapters of the volume build up a rich and illuminating picture of specific ways in which literacy is bound up with cultural practices and with different ways of seeing the world. They also address fundamental questions about the relationship between language, literacy and power in multi-ethnic contexts.

Innovative Curricular and Pedagogical Designs in Bilingual Teacher Education by Cristian R. Aquino-Sterling,Mileidis Gort,Belinda Bustos Flores Pdf

This edited volume extends our field of studies by highlighting novel 21st century curricular designs and pedagogical practices in the preparation of future bilingual teachers and their relevance for advancing curriculum, instruction, and educational achievement across bilingual school contexts. In particular, the volume provides a much-needed overview of innovative bilingual teacher preparation practices designed and implemented to develop bilingual teacher professionals equipped to effect curricular and pedagogical changes in bilingual settings. As such, two main questions guiding the orchestration of the volume are: (a) What innovative curricular and pedagogical designs characterize the field of bilingual teacher education in 21st century? and (b) How do or could these innovative curricular and pedagogical approaches for educating future bilingual teachers influence teacher practices in bilingual contexts for advancing curriculum, pedagogy and the achievement of bilingual learners? ENDORSEMENTS: "This collection of chapters in English and Spanish offers readers novel place-based ways of transforming bilingual/biliterate teacher education programs to ensure that new teachers gain pedagogical language, literacy, and content practices that expand language and literacy in heretofore unimagined ways. All bilingual/biliterate teacher educators should read this extraordinary book." — Christian J. Faltis, Texas A&M International University "This volume deftly addresses a topic of great currency on the bilingual education agenda: how to orchestrate curricular and pedagogical innovation in teacher development and how to enact change at the grassroots level through its impact on teaching practices. A must-read tour de force for anyone interested in the development, implementation, or research of quality bilingual teacher education." — María Luisa Pérez Cañado, Universidad de Jaén "Enduring critiques of teacher education, once the sole province of conservative policymakers, now includes many thinkers we formally considered allies. This excellent collection, which includes a host of new and powerful voices, forces all sides to sit up and pay attention." — Kip Téllez, University of California, Santa Cruz
