Band Structure Engineering in Semiconductor Microstructures by R.A. Abram,M. Jaros Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Band Structure Engineering in Semiconductor Microstructures held at Il Ciocco, Castelvecchio Pascali in Tuscany between 10th and 15th April 1988. Research on semiconductor microstructures has expanded rapidly in recent years as a result of developments in the semiconductor growth and device fabrication technologies. The emergence of new semiconductor structures has facilitated a number of approaches to producing systems with certain features in their electronic structure which can lead to useful or interesting properties. The interest in band structure engineering has stimd ated a variety of physical investigations and nove 1 device concepts and the field now exhibits a fascinating interplay betwepn pure physics and device technology. Devices based on microstruc tures are useful vehicles for fundamental studies but also new device ideas require a thorough understanding of the basic physics. Around forty researchers gathered at I1 Ciocco in the Spring of 1988 to discuss band structure engineering in semiconductor microstructures.

Optical Properties and Band Structure of Semiconductors by David L. Greenaway,Günther Harbeke Pdf

Optical Properties and Band Structure of Semiconductors, Volume 1 presents the experimental studies of the fundamental energy band structure of semiconductors and insulators. This book provides detailed information of the available measurement methods and results for a large number of both cubic and non-cubic materials. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the fundamental band structure of semiconductors. This text then discusses the instrumentation and methods available for the measurement of absorption coefficient, absolute reflection coefficient, and other optical properties of insulators and semiconductors primarily in their fundamental region. Other chapters consider the interband transitions in the one-electron approximation. The final chapter deals with the equivalence of the transverse and longitudinal dielectric constants in the frequency range under consideration. This book is a valuable resource for solid state physicists. Readers and researchers with interest in the electron and optical properties of semiconductors and insulators will also find this book useful.

Electronic Structure of Organic Semiconductors by Luís Alcácer Pdf

Written in the perspective of an experimental chemist, this book puts together some fundamentals from chemistry, solid state physics and quantum chemistry, to help with understanding and predicting the electronic and optical properties of organic semiconductors, both polymers and small molecules. The text is intended to assist graduate students and researchers in the field of organic electronics to use theory to design more efficient materials for organic electronic devices such as organic solar cells, light emitting diodes and field effect transistors. After addressing some basic topics in solid state physics, a comprehensive introduction to molecular orbitals and band theory leads to a description of computational methods based on Hartree-Fock and density functional theory (DFT), for predicting geometry conformations, frontier levels and energy band structures. Topological defects and transport and optical properties are then addressed, and one of the most commonly used transparent conducting polymers, PEDOT:PSS, is described in some detail as a case study.

Electronic Structure and Optical Properties of Semiconductors by Marvin L. Cohen,James R. Chelikowsky Pdf

We began planning and writing this book in the late 1970s at the suggestion of Manuel Cardona and Helmut Lotsch. We also received considerable en couragement and stimulation from colleagues. Some said there was a need for instructional material in this area while others emphasized the utility of a research text. We tried to strike a compromise. The figures, tables, and references are included to enable researchers to obtain quickly essential information in this area of semiconductor research. For instructors and stu dents, we attempt to cover some basic ideas about electronic structure and semiconductor physics with applications to real, rather than model, solids. We wish to thank our colleagues and collaborators whose research re sults and ideas are presented here. Special thanks are due to Jim Phillips who influenced us both during our formative years and afterwards. We are grateful to Sari Yamagishi for her patience and skill with the typing and production of the manuscript. Finally, we acknowledge the great patience of Helmut Lotsch and Manuel Cardona. Band Theory and Electronic Properties of Solids by John Singleton Pdf

This book provides an introduction to band theory and the electronic properties of materials at a level suitable for final-year undergraduates or first-year graduate students. It sets out to provide the vocabulary and quantum-mechanical training necessary to understand the electronic, optical and structural properties of the materials met in science and technology and describes some of the experimental techniques which are used to study band structure today. In order to leave space for recent developments, the Drude model and the introduction of quantum statistics are treated synoptically. However, Bloch's theorem and two tractable limits, a very weak periodic potential and the tight-binding model, are developed rigorously and in three dimensions. Having introduced the ideas of bands, effective masses and holes, semiconductor and metals are treated in some detail, along with the newer ideas of artificial structures such as super-lattices and quantum wells, layered organic substances and oxides. Some recent `hot topics' in research are covered, e.g. the fractional Quantum Hall Effect and nano-devices, which can be understood using the techniques developed in the book. In illustrating examples of e.g. the de Haas-van Alphen effect, the book focuses on recent experimental data, showing that the field is a vibrant and exciting one. References to many recent review articles are provided, so that the student can conduct research into a chosen topic at a deeper level. Several appendices treating topics such as phonons and crystal structure make the book self-contained introduction to the fundamentals of band theory and electronic properties in condensed matter physic today.

This book describes advanced epitaxial growth and self-aligned processing techniques for the fabrication of III-V semiconductor devices such as heterojunction bipolar transistors and high electron mobility transistors. It is the first book to describe the use of carbon-doping and low damage dry etching techniques that have proved indispensable in making reliable, high performance devices. These devices are used in many applications such as cordless telephones and high speed lightwave communication systems.
