Chronicles on African Philosophy of Higher Education by Anonim Pdf

The central argument in this book revolves around the significance of an African philosophy of higher education. Such a philosophy is geared towards cultivating democratic iterations, co-belonging, and critique within human encounters. Together, these actions can enhance intellectual activism within and beyond the encounters. A philosophy of higher education is constituted by a philosophical act of reflexivity according to which (how), freedom (both autonomous and communal), cosmopolitanism (learning to live with differences and otherness), and caring with others (ubuntu) can be rhythmically practised. What makes an African philosophy of higher education distinctive and realisable is that practices ought to be based on iterations, co-belonging, and critique. If intellectual activism were not to become a major act of resistance on the basis of which educational, political, and societal dystopias can be undermined, such a philosophy of higher education would not have a real purpose. An African philosophy of higher education is an intellectually activist endeavour because of its concern to be oppositional to constraints in and about higher education. In conversation with such an understanding of this philosophy, contributors to this volume offer responses to why human freedom, cosmopolitanism, and caring with others (ubuntu) can be rhythmically enacted.

Towards an Ubuntu University by Yusef Waghid,Judith Terblanche,Lester Brian Shawa,Joseph Pardon Hungwe,Faiq Waghid,Zayd Waghid Pdf

This book explores the argument to reconsider the idea of a university in light of the African ethic of ubuntu; literally, human dignity and interdependence. The book discusses, through the context of higher education discourse of philosophy and comparative education, how global universities have evolved into higher educational institutions concerned with knowledge (re)production for various end purposes that range from individual autonomy, to public accountability, to serving the interests of the economy and markets. The question can legitimately be asked: Is an ubuntu university different from an entrepreneurial university, thinking university, and ecological university? While these different understandings of a university accentuate both the epistemological and moral imperatives in relation to itself and the societies in which they manifest, it is through the ubuntu university that emotivism in the forms of dignity and humaneness will enhance a university’s capacity for autonomy, responsibility, and criticality. This book would be of academic interest to university educators and students in philosophy of education, comparative education, and cultural studies.

Towards a Philosophy of Caring in Higher Education by Yusef Waghid Pdf

This book advances a re-imagined view of caring in higher education. The author proposes an argument of rhythmic caring, whereby teachers hold back or release their judgments in such a way that students’ judgments are influenced accordingly. In doing so, the author argues that rhythmic caring encourages students to become more willing and confident in articulating their understandings, judgments and opinions, rather than being prematurely judged and prevented from re-articulating themselves. Thus, rhythmic caring can engender a different understanding of higher education: one that is connected to the cultivation of values such as autonomy, justice, empathy, mutual respect and Ubuntu (human dignity and interdependence). This book will be of interest and value to students and scholars of caring within education, as well as Ubuntu caring through the African context.

African Philosophy of Education Reconsidered by Yusef Waghid Pdf

Much of the literature on the African philosophy of education juxtaposes two philosophical strands as mutually exclusive entities; traditional ethnophilosophy on the one hand, and ‘scientific African philosophy on the other. While traditional ethnophilosophy is associated with the cultural artefacts, narratives, folklore and music of Africa‘s peop

Education, Crisis and Philosophy by Yusef Waghid Pdf

This book brings together a discussion of educational philosophy, nihilism and humanity to rethink education in times of crisis, with a particular focus on teaching and learning in universities. The book argues that an educational crisis manifests when the value of academic institutions come under attack, looking closely at how higher education practices have been devalued. The book is situated in the context of three intertwined crises; the coronavirus pandemic, economic decline resulting in poverty and unemployment, and the crisis of human migration. It questions what the role of education is, or ought to be, in times of crisis and how our humanity ought to be cultivated during such turbulent times. This novel and timely text will be of great interest to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the fields of educational philosophy, higher education and international education.

Rupturing African Philosophy on Teaching and Learning by Yusef Waghid,Faiq Waghid,Zayd Waghid Pdf

This book examines African philosophy of education and the enactment of ubuntu justice through a massive open online course on Teaching for Change. The authors argue that such pedagogic encounters have the potential to stimulate just and democratic human relations: encounters that are critical, deliberate, reflective and compassionate could enable just and democratic human relations to flourish, thus inducing decolonisation and decoloniality. Exploring arguments for imaginative and tolerant pedagogic encounters that could help cultivate an African university where educators and students can engender morally and politically responsible pedagogical actions, the authors offer pathways for thinking more imaginatively about higher education in a globalised African context. This work will be of value for researchers and students of philosophy of education, higher education and democratic citizenship education.

Education for Decoloniality and Decolonisation in Africa by Chikumbutso Herbert Manthalu,Yusef Waghid Pdf

This book focuses on understandings of higher education in relation to notions of decoloniality and decolonization in southern Africa. The volume draws on a range of case studies in multiple politico-cultural contexts on the African continent, and examines some of the challenges to be overcome in order to achieve education for decolonization and decoloniality. Acknowledging that patterns of exclusion, inequality and injustice are still prevalent in the African higher education landscape, the editors and contributors proffer bold attempts at democratizing education and examine how to cultivate just, equal and diverse pedagogical relations. Featuring case studies from South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, the authors and editors examine how higher education can be further democratized and transformed along the lines of equality, liberty and recognition of diversity. This hopeful and bold collection will be of interest to scholars of decoloniality and decolonization in higher education, as well as higher education in southern Africa more specifically.

Fostering Values Education and Engaging Academic Freedom amidst Emerging Issues Related to COVID-19 by Anonim Pdf

This volume contributes to the advancement of comparative education in the world, more specifically in expanding understandings of the discourse of comparative education vis-à-vis educational transformation. Throughout the text, three critical elements that reflect comparative education as an open, inconclusive discourse come up: (1) There is sufficient pedagogical space for dissonance. It is always possible to compare one’s own authenticity with the epistemological position others hold dear and argue for. (2) The contributions in this book should not be read as absolute pieces of writing as that would undermine the flexible nature of education. It is important to point out that the opinions of the authors are temporary moments of attachment to persuasive claims. However, these claims are not cast in stone as new views continue to emerge from epistemological (re)positioning. (3) Our own reading of the book corroborates our interest in comparative education as a continuous discourse in the making. The contributions of scholars at the third symposium organized by WCCES provided a platform for them to pursue their knowledge interests. In addition, these interests have and will or ought never to be homogenous for that would be incommensurate with a defensible practice of comparative education.

Philosophical, Educational, and Moral Openings in Doctoral Pursuits and Supervision by Yusef Waghid Pdf

This timely volume conceptualises and applies the philosophical notions of wonder, wander, and whisper, serving as evaluative paradigms for objective assessment of quality doctoral research work and supervision in South African higher education. Written by one of the foremost academics in the field, the book combines the normative philosophical, educational, and moral notions of wonder, wander, and whisper with academic life and studies, focusing on doctoral work and supervision not just as cognitive or scientific processes, but also as existential, ethical, and political shaping of the self. By reflecting on three decades of doctoral supervision, the author gives an account of how his students have been initiated into moral discourses of democratic citizenship education and the intellectual adventures they have embarked upon through scholarly texts. The book also presents itself as a decolonial venture that repositions and resituates doctoral education in resistance to the hegemony of colonisation, inhumanity, inequality, unfreedom, and injustice in Southern Africa. Ultimately arguing for the relevance of wonder, wander, and whisper in academic culture, the book will appeal to scholars, researchers, and postgraduates in the fields of higher education, philosophy of education, and sociology of education as well as African education and doctoral studies more broadly.

African Epistemologies in Higher Education Research by Kolawole Samuel Adeyemo Pdf

Bringing a needed perspective on African Epistemologies on the critical topics of higher education in relation to knowledge systems, this book highlights how knowledge creation processes influence higher education systems, society, and African development. This book uses an interdisciplinary approach to frame the connections between academic knowledge systems. Specifically, it seeks to answer questions on the trends in knowledge mobility, histories, and sociological dimensions in knowledge production in post-colonial Africa. The discussion explores how existing knowledge systems can better align with past and present narratives throughout African history and philosophies. The primary thought behind this book is to deconstruct the idea of a free market, the issue of corruption, racism and the neoliberalist approach to knowledge creation and transmission. Thus, it seeks to answer questions on the history and sociological dimensions of knowledge production in higher education. The book argues that African epistemologies can be better understood by investigating present sociologies and histories shaping African higher education research. Researchers and university students in the field of sociology of education, economics of education, higher education and policy will find this book very useful.

Knowledge and Change in African Universities by Michael Cross, amasa ndofirepi Pdf

Besides the ongoing concern with the epistemological and theoretical hegemony of the West in African academic practice, the book aims at understanding how knowledge is produced and controlled through the interplay of the politics of knowledge and current intellectual discourses in universities in Africa. In this regard, the book calls for African universities to relocate from the position of object to subject in order to gain a form of liberated epistemological voice more responsive to the social and economic complexities of the continent. In itself, this is a critical exposé of contemporary practices in knowledge advancement in the continent. Broadly the book addresses the following questions: How can African universities reinvent knowledge production and dissemination in the face of the dominant Eurocentricism so pervasive and characteristic of academic practice in Africa to enhance their relevance to the contexts in which they operate? How can such change, particularly at knowledge production and distribution levels, be undertaken, without falling into an intellectual and discursive ghettoization in the global context? What then is the role of academics, policy makers and curriculum and program designers in dealing with biases and distortions to integrate policies, knowledge and pedagogy that reflect current cultural diversity, both local and global? Against this backdrop, while some contributions in this book argue that emancipatory epistemic voice in African universities is not yet born, or it is struggling with little success, many dissenting voices charge that if Africans do not take responsibility and construct knowledge strategies for their own emancipation, who will?

Real Men Wear Pink by Jonathan T. Smalls Ph.D. Pdf

The genesis of Real Men Wear PINK evolved at the end of a five-year estrangement from my brother Pink McCaskell Jr. After serving time at Mason County Jail in Michigan, Pink returned home with hopes of leaving his past behind to embark on uncharted territory. Pink's journey would begin with unconventional access to college. Ironically, two brothers'--"the thug" and "the scholar"--paths crossed on a college campus. Though I was the scholar, he became my professor and unveiled the mysteries of machismo behavior in the context of racial, gender, and economic oppression. Machismo is the professor of Black men. He proliferates the luxuries of sex, aggression, power, deviance, and aloofness. Real Men Wear PINK uses the creativity of storytelling to unveil how machismo manifests in four Black male collegians from diverse backgrounds--Avery Johnson, Jaleen Gonzalez, Julius Simba-Simbi, and Pink McCaskell Jr. At the crossroads, each is challenged with accepting their past and forging a promising future. The book uniquely captures the struggles of being Black, male, and a collegian by using parables rooted in theory and practice to reimagine Black males' purpose, integrity, nurture, and knowledge--PINK.

Unyoking African University Knowledge by Anonim Pdf

The discourse of decolonisation, though littered with unresolved contestation in the university as an institution of higher learning, has often been blamed on the impact of neoliberal globalisation philosophy. The volume focuses on unfinished project of decolonisation, with an aim on African knowledge and the historical question of canonicity by keeping the emancipative dialogue alive. The authors place great scrutiny on the quality of curriculum offered in universities arguing that a sound relevant curriculum, original to the continent, can save Africa’s citizenry from challenges bedevilling socio-economic development. This book proposes a disruption and potential end to western hegemonic epistemologies that manifest the neoliberal geopolitical terrain in the form of cultural imperialism, epistemicide, and linguicide through a decolonial approach to the curriculum in African universities. It interrogates and challenges the neo-colonial entanglement in regional higher education policy processes coupled with the excessive dependence of regional stakeholders on western external actors for higher education policy and envisages a decolonial alternative future for the regionalisation of higher education in Africa. To this end, the book brings in a more philosophical and practical hermeneutic of knowledge production and dissemination that unyokes post-independence African universities from the bondage of erstwhile colonisers.
