David Chipperfield Architects Berlin and the Kunsthaus Zürich by Kunsthaus Zürich Pdf

This book elegantly traces the genesis of David Chipperfield's extension for the Kunsthaus Zürich. David Chipperfield's new building for the Kunsthaus Zürich now stands in all its splendor on Zurich's Heimplatz, opposite the old museum building of 1910 designed by Karl Moser. Its opening to the public in October 2021 will make the Kunsthaus Zürich Switzerland's largest art museum. Following two previous volumes on Kunsthaus Zürich's architectural history and the design used to turn it into an art museum for the twenty-first century, this book documents the genesis of Chipperfield's extension from proposal through political debates about the entire project to the completed structure. It features a foreword by Chipperfield and an essay by Christoph Felger, executive architect for the project at David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, that discusses the design concept, the promise made with it, and its fulfillment. A conversation between Felger, director of the City of Zurich's Building Surveyor's Office Wiebke Rösler, Kunsthaus Zürich's director Christoph Becker, and architecture critic Sabine von Fischer, as well as numerous illustrations and plans round out this new volume.

Neues Museum Berlin by Julian Harrap,David Chipperfield Architects Pdf

This book, edited by David Chipperfield, documents his most important project to date: the Neues Museum, the centrepiece of the Berlin Museumsinsel. Here he connects the old and new in a completely novel way. As he says himself, he proceeded like a painter, who painstakingly considers every dab of paint. Photographs by Candida Höfer show the rooms after their completion and before they were furnished. As Höfer avoided using artificial light, the rooms are bathed in a soft natural light. These critical moments are perfectly reproduced in the book as matt colour plates. The photographer is inspired by the empty rooms and grandiose corridors of space to then dedicate her attention to the architects interventions. This artistic-photographic documentation is complemented by texts from wellknown architects, architectural historians, art historians and conservation architects. They highlight the fundamental principles of the project of conservation and complementation. Kenneth Frampton discusses the almost historical endeavour to restore such a building and responds to Chipperfields architectural interventions, purely abstract forms that avoid any trace of kitsch. Joseph Rykwert describes the fragmented history of which this building is evidence, thanks to its many layers. An interview with David Chipperfield byWolfgangWolters imparts insights into the problems and questions that the restoration posed, and in his contribution, ThomasWeski takes a closer look at Candida Höfers photography. In addition, a chronology offers an overview of the history of the building, the request for proposals for its reconstruction and the restoration itself.

Everything starts with space. To make space is the first motivation, the first responsibility, the first problem. Space gives form, space gives plan. The plan is not a generator, it is a diagram for a spatial idea.

UnDoing Buildings by Sally Stone Pdf

UnDoing Buildings: Adaptive Reuse and Cultural Memory discusses one of the greatest challenges for twenty-first-century society: what is to be done with the huge stock of existing buildings that have outlived the function for which they were built? Their worth is well recognised and the importance of retaining them has been long debated, but if they are to be saved, what is to be done with these redundant buildings? This book argues that remodelling is a healthy and environmentally friendly approach. Issues of heritage, conservation, sustainability and smartness are at the forefront of many discussions about architecture today and adaptive reuse offers the opportunity to reinforce the particular character of an area using up-to-date digital and construction techniques for a contemporary population. Issues of collective memory and identity combined with ideas of tradition, history and culture mean that it is possible to retain a sense of continuity with the past as a way of creating the future. UnDoing Buildings: Adaptive Reuse and Cultural Memory has an international perspective and will be of interest to upper level students and professionals working on the fields of Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, Conservation, Urban Design and Development.

Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin: Refurbishment of an Architectural Icon by Arne Maibohm,Bundesamt für Bundesamt für Bauwesen und Raumordnung Pdf

The Neue Nationalgalerie on the Berlin Kulturforum is an architectural icon as well as the crowning conclusion of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's life work. An outstandingly successful and sensitive refurbishment and modernization project was carried out for the building's most significant overhaul since its opening in 1968. It complies with the requirements of a contemporary museum exhibition facility, as well as monument-preservation guidelines. David Chipperfield Architects developed the renovation concept under the motto of "As much Mies as possible." This publication provides deep insight into the planning, execution, monument preservation and restoration from the perspective of those involved. The exemplary handling of the historical fabric is presented in design documents and numerous large-format photographs that impressively illustrate the design stage, the construction site and the results of the refurbishment. With articles by David Chipperfield, Bernhard Furrer, Gunny Harboe, Joachim Jaeger, Dirk Lohan, Fritz Neumeyer, Alexander Schwarz, Gerrit Wegener, and some 30 project managers

Neue Nationalgalerie by Joachim Jäger,Constanze Marlin Pdf

The Neue Nationalgalerie, which was erected in 1965-68, is the only building by the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in Germany from after the Second World War. With its steel roof over the glass-walled exhibition hall and its reduced design vocabulary, it is regarded as an icon of modernism and as the legacy of a visionary master builder. Following the restoration by the firm David Chipperfield Architects, the Neue Nationalgalerie is reopening with new glory in 2021. With numerous specialist texts and large-format photographs, the book focuses on the architecture of the museum in three thematic groups: the historical building, the fundamental restoration, and the renovated building. Detailed and large-format photographs heighten awareness of the unique architecture, which Mies van der Rohe designed down to the smallest detail.

Neri & Hu Design and Research Office by Neri & Hu Design and Research Office,Lyndon Neri,Rossana Hu,Nellie Yang Pdf

Founded in 2004 by partners Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, Neri&Hu Design and Research Office is an inter-disciplinary architectural design practice based in Shanghai, China with an additional office in London, UK. Neri&Hu works internationally providing architecture, interior, master planning, graphic, and product design services. Currently working on projects in many countries, Neri&Hu is composed of multi-cultural staff who speak over 30 different languages. The diversity of the team reinforces a core vision for the practice: to respond to a global worldview incorporating overlapping design disciplines for a new paradigm in architecture. Neri&Hu s location is purposeful. With Shanghai considered a new global frontier, Neri&Hu is in the center of this contemporary chaos. The city s cultural, urban, and historic contexts function as a point of departure for the architectural explorations involved in every project. Because new sets of contemporary problems relating to buildings now extend beyond traditional architecture, the practice challenges traditional boundaries of architecture to include other complementary disciplines. Neri&Hu believes strongly in research as a design tool, as each project bears its unique set of contextual issues. A critical probing into the specificities of program, site, function, and history is essential to the creation of rigorous design work. Based on research, Neri&Hu desires to anchor its work on the dynamic interaction of experience, detail, material, form, and light rather than conforming to a formulaic style. The ultimate significance behind each project comes from how the built forms create meaning through their physical representations. In 2014, UK Wallpaper* announced Mr. Neri and his partner Rossana Hu as 2014 Designer of The Year. In 2013, Mr. Neri was inducted into U.S. Interior Design Hall of Fame with partner Rossana Hu and was selected as AD 100 top talents in architecture and interior design by Architectural Digest China. The practice was selected as the 2011 INSIDE Festival Overall Winner, won AR Awards for Emerging Architecture 2010 by Architectural Review (UK) and one of the Design Vanguards in 2009 by Architectural Record (US). In 2006, Mr. Neri was selected by I.D. Magazine as one of the 40 designers globally who deserve more attention in the I.D. 40 . http: //enthepractice.neriandhu.com/content/philosophy This new monograph is the first book ever published on Neri&Hu. In a lavishly illustrated beautiful design concept it presents a selection of their work in architecture and product design. The content is structured in an introduction including also an essay on the topic of renovation, and three sections: Buildings, Products, and Projects. "Buildings" features seven renovation projects in Shanghai, complete refurbishments as well as interior redesigns. The projects include three retail spaces, Neri&Hu s own office building, a hotel, a restaurant, and a private home. "Products" presents tea ware, a chair and table, and a picnic basket. "Projects" documents ongoing and unrealized architectural work: a private residence in Florida (US), two hotel renovations projects in London and Shanghai, and a museum renovation in Kuala Lumpur. An overview on Neri&Hu s projects to date rounds out the book. The illustrative concept zooms from overview to detail: project documentations include with site plans, demolition plans and sections (i.e. showing demolished, and preserved parts of existing buildings as well as proposed additions) as well as detailed paving and furniture plans for interiors and details of selected products.
