Contemporary Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction by Kevin T. McVary Pdf

Erectile dysfunction can affect all age groups. Numerous physical and emotional risk factors may contribute to the problem. These risk factors can range from chronic diseases and medications to psychological factors. In the U.S. alone, it has been estimated that 18 to 30 million men suffer from erectile dysfunction. This number has increased significantly as awareness of the disorder has heightened. Researchers and health care professionals now have a better understanding of what causes erectile dysfunction and the effective medications and non-medication treatments used to treat the condition. Comprehensive and state-of-the-art, Contemporary Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction: A Clinical Guide synthesizes the literature and covers all aspects of treating erectile dysfunction and other related male sexual dysfunctions. This invaluable title offers all physicians, residents, and fellows -- and even medical students and other health professionals such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants – an essential reference for enhancing diagnosis and treatment of this debilitating disorder.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Erectile Disturbances by R. Taylor Segraves Pdf

This book is the result of an informal association between the editors which extends back to 1974. At the beginning, it was a tenuous alliance between physicians in quite different medical subspecialties-urology and psychiatry. As the alliance was forged, subspecialty rivalries and mistrust were replaced by a common clinical interest in the diagnosis and treatment of erectile problems. We quickly became aware of the high prevalence of such disorders, how poorly prepared we were to make accurate and re sponsible diagnosis and treatment plans, and how complicated an etiol ogical diagnosis could prove to be. A variety of biological and psychological influences bear on sexual function, and in many clinical contexts, diagnosis and treatment planning involves consideration of complex interactive var iables. The need for an expanded multidisciplinary team became obvious. The requisite knowledge base extended across too many subspecialty boundaries, and the necessary information was not available in a conve nient source. As we began accumulating the information base, we became aware that this information might be of value to other physicians. The authors enjoy the luxury of an academic setting in which special expertise can be readily assembled. Such resources are often unavailable to the physician in practice. Thus, it is our hope that this text can serve as a multi specialty team for the physician in solo practice. R. TAYLOR SEGRAVES New Orleans, Louisiana HARRY W.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction by U. S. Department of Health and Human Services,Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Pdf

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a complex condition involving psychosocial and biological factors. It is defined as the persistent inability to achieve or maintain penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. ED is a common disorder of male sexual function, affecting all age groups with a considerable impact on quality of life. Oral phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE–5) inhibitors are the first-line treatment options offered to patients with ED. This systematic review of the recent evidence on clinical benefits and harms associated with different pharmaceutical treatments used in the management of male ED is to clarify uncertainties in the field, as well as to identify existing knowledge gaps and directions for future research. The purpose of this evidence report was to review systematically the literature on the diagnosis and pharmaceutical treatments of erectile dysfunction (ED) and to address the following objectives put forth by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the American College of Physicians (ACP). The primary objectives of this evidence report were: KQ 1. To determine the clinical utility of routine blood tests - testosterone, prolactin, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) - in identifying and affecting therapeutic outcomes for treatable causes of ED. KQ 2. To determine the benefits of pharmaceutical treatments for patients with ED. KQ 3. To determine the harms of pharmaceutical treatments for patients with ED. The secondary objectives of this evidence report were: KQ 2a. To explore how patient-specific characteristics (e.g. specific symptoms, age, comorbid conditions) may affect prognosis and treatment success for ED patients. KQ 2b. To determine if the likelihood of treatment success varies by underlying cause of ED. KQ 3a. To identify specific harms, such as nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) and penile fibrosis of pharmaceutical treatments in patients with ED.

Male Sexual Function by John J. Mulcahy Pdf

The first edition of Male Sexual Function: A Guide to Clinical Management was published in 2001. Since that time, two new oral medications for erectile dysfunction ® ® (ED), Vardenafil (Levitra ) and Tadalafil (Cialis ), have been introduced. Links between ED and lower urinary tract symptoms have been postulated, advances in the basic science of erectile physiology have occurred, and the appreciation of ED as a form of endothelial dysfunction and a harbinger of other more potentially lethal forms of vascular disease has become more widespread. In some instances, third-party payers have reduced or eliminated coverage for ED treatments in an attempt to cut costs. They have classified sexual activity as “recreational,” “lifestyle,” or not medically necessary, but have failed to appreciate the negative consequences of ED, such as depression with all of its ramifications. Male Sexual Function: A Guide to Clinical Management, Second Edition is a comp- hensive overview of the field of male sexual function and includes a chapter on female sexual dysfunction, an emerging field with a very high incidence in the population and an ever-growing following.
