Ordinary People, Extraordinary Violence by Chitralekha Pdf

The book engages with an urgent and disturbing question: how are ordinary people readied to willingly kill others in the name of a cause? It compares narratives of actors in domains often assumed incomparable in academic discourse: Naxalites studied within the framework of peasant rebellion, social movement or recently even terrorism, and Hindu rioters viewed mostly under the broad rubric of ethnic violence. The book draws from the author’s extensive and painstaking fieldwork, first with Naxalite armed cadre across seven districts in Jharkhand and Bihar, and later with participants in the 2002 riots in Gujarat. Viewed from the standpoint of the perpetrator or foot soldier, the book bridges hitherto sacrosanct boundaries between left-extremist and communal violence, making available a whole new dimension to the study of social mobilisation, the politics of identity and, with far reaching implications, discovers deep commonalities in the life-worlds and aspirations of those motivated to kill in the name of a cause in apparently disparate contexts. The findings of this compelling analysis of human actors — ordinary people driven to extraordinary violence — will interest the informed general reader, as also those interested in sociology, politics, violence studies, ethnic movements, Naxalism, policy studies, and peace & conflict studies.

Broken Soul by Tina Irene Lynch Pdf

In Broken Soul, the author tells the story of her mother's alcoholism, and fanatic love for her father; which nearly destroyed her entire family from the late 1940's to the present. She believed that her baby brother suffered the most, and was also let down by the local agencies which should have come to his rescue. The author expresses how her father's side of her family may possibly contain DNA of high achievers, which led her to compare her family's life experiences with her father's extended family, especially a cousin who rose up to become President Obama's appointed US Attorney General. The author later determined that her brother and her cousin played opposite roles at the justice department since as a teenager, her brother served a life sentence in prison for murder. He served his time at Attica State Prison during the infamous 1971 riot; and due to his high achievement capability, he became one of the first prisoners in the nation to be awarded a BA degree (he majored in psychology) while serving his time in prison. He had never even completed elementary school before going to prison. Her brother played a part in developing the prison's college program while still an inmate, where he worked immediately upon his release. There was also an eighty–five–year–old cousin who formerly owned a gas station in Rocky Mount, North Carolina back in the Jim Crow era, which was unheard of at the time. The family also includes a cousin who retired in his early thirties from the Philadelphia Phillies as a major–league baseball player. Today he is an author and sports analyst for ESPN Sports TV. The story follows her brother's painful journey, from the beginning of his childhood, until his early death ended his suffering. The journey takes us deep into the reasons why so many souls die, unable to be resuscitated. The journey caused her brother a broken soul!

The Ethical Vision of Clint Eastwood by Sara Anson Vaux Pdf

Clint Eastwood is a Hollywood icon, with five Academy Awards, five Golden Globes, and numerous other accolades for his work as an actor, director, producer, and composer. Yet because he rose to fame in "spaghetti westerns" and Dirty Harry shoot-em-ups, few critics have ventured to explore Eastwood's philosophical, ethical, and artistic agenda as an intellectual filmmaker. Addressing this void, film scholar Sara Anson Vaux analyzes fifteen of Eastwood's best-known films from narrative, artistic, and thematic perspectives. She traces the nuanced development of Eastwood's unfolding moral vision over a forty-year continuum, showing how this vision has grown more sophisticated even as many of the motifs expressing it -- justice, confession, war and peace, the gathering, the search for a perfect world -- have remained the same.

Twentieth Century Drifter by Diane Diekman Pdf

Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins is the first biography of this legendary country music artist and NASCAR driver who scored sixteen number-one hits and two Grammy awards. Yet even with fame and fortune, Marty Robbins always yearned for more. Drawing from personal interviews and in-depth research, biographer Diane Diekman explains how Robbins saw himself as a drifter, a man always searching for self-fulfillment and inner peace. Born Martin David Robinson to a hardworking mother and an abusive alcoholic father, he never fully escaped the insecurities burned into him by a poverty-stricken nomadic childhood in the Arizona desert. In 1947 he got his first gig as a singer and guitar player. Too nervous to talk, the shy young man walked onstage singing. Soon he changed his name to Marty Robbins, cultivated his magnetic stage presence, and established himself as an entertainer, songwriter, and successful NASCAR driver. For fans of Robbins, NASCAR, and classic country music, Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins is a revealing portrait of this well-loved, restless entertainer, a private man who kept those who loved him at a distance.
