English Education in Oman by Rahma Al-Mahrooqi,Christopher Denman Pdf

This book explores an area that has been somewhat overlooked in the literature to date – the current status and future trends of English education in Oman. It offers a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to the subject and explores areas of English education in Oman that have, until now, been little investigated. It explores these issues from a variety of perspectives: the professionalization of English teachers in the country; the implementation of novel teaching methodologies, curricula, and assessment approaches, into what are, in many ways, still very traditional education settings; the integration of learner identity into English language instruction; country- and culture-specific concerns with conducting research with Omani participants; the strategic demands of building stronger links between education and workforce needs; and developing learner autonomy and motivation.

Issues in English Education in the Arab World by Rahma Al-Mahrooqi,Christopher Denman Pdf

Though diverse, the Arab world boasts a unique culture and native language, both of which are unlike those found in English-speaking countries. Perhaps due to the nature of these differences, Arab-Western relations have been described as existing on one of the world’s great cultural fault-lines. Debate about the potential effects, both positive and negative, of English-medium education and the learning of English in the region’s schools and universities is one expression of this. Even as debate continues, issues of politics, culture, social mobility, and identity are played out in the English language classrooms of the Arab world on a daily basis. The current volume explores some of the concerns related to the place of English and English-medium education in the Arab world. It examines issues of the relationship between English, Arabic, cultural identity and power in the region within a historical and contemporary framework; the experiences of learners from Arabic-medium secondary schools adjusting to English-medium colleges; and the challenges and potential rewards of promoting student-centered classrooms and technology in traditionally teacher-centered environments. These issues are explored from the perspectives of teachers, students, researchers and other stakeholders in Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Sudan.

Omani English Language Teachers First Year in the Classroom by Amira Al Shabibi Pdf

The principal aim of this study is to investigate the experience of novice English language teachers in the Sultanate of Oman. Within this broad perspective, the study focuses on the critical period of transition of these novice teachers from teacher education into the actual world of teaching. It also highlights the challenges of this transition and emphasizes issues related to it such as the socialisation process and the support required in this regard. The ultimate aim of the study is to develop insights into the experience of novice ELT teachers in Oman from their own perspectives in order to make this transition easier and their experience a more positive one. The study followed the experience of four novice ELT teachers over the course of a full academic year, their first year of teaching. The study adopted a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews as the principal method of data collection. The study highlights the interaction of a range of interrelated factors which collectively shape the experience of ELT novice teachers. It provides evidence of the complexity of this experience and focuses on the importance of considering the novice teachers' own perspectives on this experience. The study also emphasizes the impact of the workplace context on their experience, especially on their socialisation process. The study shows that the four novice teachers of this study went through a number of stages in their development during their first year of teaching. The major challenge that the participants of this study encountered was reality shock.

Neoliberalism and English Language Education Policies in the Arabian Gulf by Osman Z. Barnawi Pdf

Over the past two decades, the Arabian oil-rich Gulf countries have faced enormous social, political, economic, cultural, religious, ideological and epistemological upheaval. Through detailed, critical comparative investigation, Neoliberalism and English Language Education Policies in the Arabian Gulf examines the impact of such disruption on education policies in a political and economic union, consisting of six countries: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. Using data collected from a wide range of sources, this thought-provoking book documents the inner workings of neoliberalism across a strategic geographical area of the Islamic world. The book teases apart the complex issues surrounding the ways in which access to English has been envisioned, contested, and protected from being challenged among different players within and between the Gulf countries. Osman Z. Barnawi explores the intensifying ideological debates between Islamic culture and Western neoliberal values, and questions whether Islamic values and traditions have been successfully harmonised with neoliberal capitalist development strategies for nation building in the Arabian Gulf region. Neoliberalism and English Language Education Policies in the Arabian Gulf will be of interest to academics, researchers and postgraduates working in the fields of language education and, more specifically, TESOL, applied linguistics, education policy, and teacher education.

Integrating TPACK and CALL in English Language Teaching by Alotumi, Mohialdeen Pdf

Teaching English, or any other language, in the 21st century requires teachers to be competent in using computer-assisted language learning (CALL) to alleviate learning of subject matter and assess methods of instruction in different contexts. To be CALL competent, English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers should have acquired the seven subdomains of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) regarding their subject matter before going into their teaching practice. As the learning environment evolves, technology plays a crucial role, so EFL teachers need to be well-prepared to deal with it. Therefore, English language teacher education (ELTE) should bear the onus of acquainting student teachers with all the necessary knowledge domains connecting content, pedagogy, and technology. Integrating TPACK and CALL in English Language Teaching presents the EFL context of the world and examines the underpinnings of ELTE and its connection to technology. It emphasizes that current EFL student teachers in the ELTE programs across the world should be empowered with TPACK applicable to their subject matter to integrate CALL effectively into prospective instruction. Besides foregrounding current challenges and exploring germane research in the world, the book provides an insightful examination of the field of CALL. Covering topics such as English language teacher education (ELTE), computer-assisted language learning (CALL), and EFL TPACK, this premier reference source is ideal for professionals, researchers, policymakers, and executives concerned with implementing technology integration in EFL teacher education programs.

Education and Society in the Middle East and North Africa by Milton George,Sergio Saleem Scatolini Pdf

In the past, the Middle East and the so-called Muslim world used to be beacons of learning and critical thought. Although historical variables—such as conquest, internal conflict, and colonization—demoted their position on the global stage, changes are now in the offing. In these interesting times, a growing number of educators, thinkers and visionaries are trying both to find and to generate new approaches to the past, present, and future of the region. This book is a collection of articles which reflect on various aspects related to education and society in the Middle East and North Africa (also known as the MENA region), their peoples and educational processes. It provides a platform for people to join the global conversation and to contribute to it with data which are relevant to regional concerns, research and practices. This is necessary because many of the theories and research findings which are still being used to understand the region were generated elsewhere and, despite their lack of regional representativeness, were generalized as the most trustworthy interpretive tools across the world. Hence, there is a need for the world to open up to the voices from the MENA region.
