Entangled Otherness by Charlotte Hammond Pdf

Entangled Otherness explores the dynamics of cross-dressing and gender performance in contemporary Francophone Caribbean cultures. Through examination of archival texts, artistic works and oral histories the author reveals how strategies of crossing, mimicry and masquerade have enabled resistance to the racialised, gendered and patriarchal classifications of bodies that characterized Enlightenment thought during the French transatlantic slave trade.

Engaging with Everyday Sounds by Marcel Cobussen Pdf

'Engaging With Everyday Sounds' is a rich and inspiring exploration of the role of sounds in everyday life, including their impact on human actions, emotions, and imagination. Marcel Cobussen intertwines sonic studies with philosophy, sound art, sociology and more to create an impressively lucid and innovative guide to sonic materialism, calling for a re-sensitization to our acoustic environment and arguing that everyday sounds have (micro)political, social, and ethical impact to which we should attend. Exploring the intellectual history of sound studies as well as local, global, and temporal sonic geographies, Cobussen weaves audio files, images, and journal excerpts into his work to create a multimodal monograph that explores the relationships of humans, nonhumans, and their environments through sound. This accessible and interdisciplinary collection of short, powerful essays will be valuable reading for both academics and the general reader interested in sound studies, sound art, philosophy, or the sociology of everyday life—and for anyone keen to think about the sonic in new and engaging ways.

Walking as Critical Inquiry by Alexandra Lasczik,Amy Cutter-Mackenzie-Knowles,David Rousell Pdf

This book is a transdisciplinary, international collection situated within a genealogy of experimental walking practices in the arts, arts-based research, and emergent walking practices in education. It brings together emerging cartographies of relation amongst walking practices ranging across arts-based, ecological, activist, decolonising, queer, critical and posthuman modes of inquiry. Its particular investment is in the proliferation of artful modes of inquiry that open up speculative practices and concepts of walking as an orientation for pedagogy, inquiry, and the everyday, resisting the gaze of privilege and the relentless commodification of human and nonhuman life processes. This is important work for the burgeoning demand for creative methodologies in the social sciences, and more specifically, for arts-based educational research.

Entangled Identities and Otherness in Late Antique and Early Medieval Europe by Jorge López Quiroga,Michel Kazanski,Vujadin Ivanišević Pdf

Much has been written in recent years about Identities, understood as social, nested or constructing identities; or 'Ethnic Identity', presented as a strategy of distinction and/or identification, as a multidimensional or endogenous ethnicity, or also interpreted as a social construction, social network, negotiated or group identity; and concerning the 'Archaeology of the Identity', including the explicit relation between mortuary practices and Social Identities in a 'multi-ethnic' perspective or as a 'constructed strategy of shifting identities'. This book is not 'another brick in the wall', but a contribution to 'break the wall' between different disciplines in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary framework. We present in this volume fifteen papers focused on theoretical and interpretative proposals from the textual, archaeological and bioarchaeological record, as well as a series of 'case studies' on certain European areas essentially throughout the analysis of the funeral world in the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.

Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake Pdf

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A “brilliant [and] entrancing” (The Guardian) journey into the hidden lives of fungi—the great connectors of the living world—and their astonishing and intimate roles in human life, with the power to heal our bodies, expand our minds, and help us address our most urgent environmental problems. “Grand and dizzying in how thoroughly it recalibrates our understanding of the natural world.”—Ed Yong, author of An Immense World ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR—Time, BBC Science Focus, The Daily Mail, Geographical, The Times, The Telegraph, New Statesman, London Evening Standard, Science Friday When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave. In the first edition of this mind-bending book, Sheldrake introduced us to this mysterious but massively diverse kingdom of life. This exquisitely designed volume, abridged from the original, features more than one hundred full-color images that bring the spectacular variety, strangeness, and beauty of fungi to life as never before. Fungi throw our concepts of individuality and even intelligence into question. They are metabolic masters, earth makers, and key players in most of life’s processes. They can change our minds, heal our bodies, and even help us remediate environmental disaster. By examining fungi on their own terms, Sheldrake reveals how these extraordinary organisms—and our relationships with them—are changing our understanding of how life works. Winner of the Wainwright Prize, the Royal Society Science Book Prize, and the Guild of Food Writers Award • Shortlisted for the British Book Award • Longlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize

The Entangled Eye by James Krasner Pdf

Because evolutionary nature can be seen only through the product of evolution - the human eye - the observer must always be aware of the physical limitations inherent in the act of perception. Krasner's study is an exploration of how Charles Darwin's representational techniques, intended to emphasize the spatial and temporal limitations besetting the human observer without diminishing the grand scheme of evolutionary nature, transformed his opulently "entangled" nature into a formless, psychologically interior landscape. Evolutionary nature's abundance and variety required Darwin and the turn-of-the-century British nature writers who followed him to portray the world as though seen through a physiologically limited, human eye. Investigating the shift from Victorian to modernist sensibilities in the context of evolutionary biology and perceptual theory, Krasner shows that, while profoundly attentive to landscape and biology, nature writers chose a mode of representing nature based on visual perception that led them toward a more abstract and psychological portrayal of natural landscapes. Using the visual perception theories of Berkeley, Hamilton, Brewster, Koffka, and James, Krasner investigates the ways in which Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and D.H. Lawrence, as well as other naturalists and nature writers, came to portray nature as the locus of optical illusion and visual failure. Narrative portrayals of nature become narrative portrayals of the perception of nature in which the physiological limitations of the human eye determine the structure of the representation. Bringing together literary, scientific, and popular texts, Krasner establishes the extent of Darwin's impact on theEnglish literary tradition.

Reading American Novels and Multicultural Aesthetics by Lou Freitas Caton Pdf

Using romantic theories, Caton analyzes America’s contemporary novel. Organized through the two sections of “Theory” and “Practice,” Reading American Novels and Multicultural Aesthetics begins with a study of aesthetic form only to have it reveal the content of politics and history. This presentation immediately offers a unified platform for an interchange between multiple cultural and aesthetic positions. Romantic theory provides for an integrated examination of diversity, one that metaphorically fosters a solid, inclusive, and democratic legitimacy for intercultural communication. This politically astute cosmopolitan appreciation will generate an intriguing “cross-over” audience: from ethnic studies to American studies and from literary studies to romantic studies, this book will interest a range of readers.

Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo Pdf

Lee Mandelo's debut Summer Sons is a sweltering, queer Southern Gothic that crosses Appalachian street racing with academic intrigue, all haunted by a hungry ghost. Andrew and Eddie did everything together, best friends bonded more deeply than brothers, until Eddie left Andrew behind to start his graduate program at Vanderbilt. Six months later, only days before Andrew was to join him in Nashville, Eddie dies of an apparent suicide. He leaves Andrew a horrible inheritance: a roommate he doesn’t know, friends he never asked for, and a gruesome phantom that hungers for him. As Andrew searches for the truth of Eddie’s death, he uncovers the lies and secrets left behind by the person he trusted most, discovering a family history soaked in blood and death. Whirling between the backstabbing academic world where Eddie spent his days and the circle of hot boys, fast cars, and hard drugs that ruled Eddie’s nights, the walls Andrew has built against the world begin to crumble. And there is something awful lurking, waiting for those walls to fall. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
