Expanding Horizons in Open and Distance Learning by Jennifer Roberts,Mutuota Kigotho,Adrian Stagg Pdf

This book brings together a collection of articles that were presented at the Open and Distance Learning Association of Australia (ODLAA) conference in February 2017. The authors share the common agenda of creating meaningful research in the field of distance education. Distinct themes in educational research including open, distance, and flexible education emerged from the conference and this collection addresses each of these themes. The themes explored include: teaching and learning playing an integral role in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) research; ways in which technology is used in the teaching of science subjects; how technology is applied in everyday lives, specifically in the areas of transport, accommodation, and in ordering food; the important and often neglected area of research related to staff development and competencies; research regarding Open Educational Practices (OEP); and the importance of distance education in developing countries, where online interaction is often a challenge – largely because of the lack of stable internet connectivity. This book was originally published as a special issue of Distance Education.

Online Distance Education by Olaf Zawacki-Richter,Terry Anderson Pdf

Online Distance Education: Towards a Research Agenda offers a systematic overview of the major issues, trends, and areas of priority in online distance education research. In each chapter, an international expert or team of experts provides an overview of one timely issue in online distance education, summarizing major research on the topic, discussing theoretical insights that guide the research, posing questions and directions for future research, and discussing the implications for distance education practice as a whole. Intended as a primary reference and guide for distance educators, researchers, and policymakers, Online Distance Education addresses aspects of distance education practice that have often been marginalized, including issues of cost and economics, concerns surrounding social justice, cultural bias, the need for faculty professional development, and the management and growth of learner communities. At once soundly empirical and thoughtfully reflective, yet also forward-looking and open to new approaches to online and distance teaching, this text is a solid resource for researchers in a rapidly expanding discipline.

Using Virtual Worlds in Educational Settings by Lisa Jacka Pdf

The building of communities outside of the traditional brick-and-mortar base of a school or university is at a significant point in time; virtual worlds bridge the gap between 2D web spaces online and 3D physical spaces of the classroom, providing teachers and students alike with opportunities to connect and collaborate in ways that were previously unimaginable. Providing insight into this new age of teaching, Using Virtual Worlds in Educational Settings presents a collection of practical, evidence-based ideas that illustrate the capacity for immersive virtual worlds to be integrated successfully in higher education and school settings. Examining research and stories from more than 1,000 students and six faculty members who introduced virtual worlds into their teaching and learning, this book contains practical examples of how virtual worlds can be introduced and supported, as well as reflections from faculty and students about their response to virtual worlds. This research will help teachers understand how to approach such a fundamental shift in pedagogy, how to liberate themselves from teacher-focused instruction and how to help students to develop their skills through collaboration. Outlining how and why virtual worlds could be the shift in pedagogy that teachers have been waiting for, Using Virtual Worlds in Educational Settings is an accessible, practical resource for educators to support their use of virtual worlds in teaching.

IEA is an independent cooperative of national educational research institutions and governmental research agencies dedicated to improving education. TIMSS is conducted regularly for every four years to assess students’ achievement in science and mathematics at both the fourth and eighth grades. The project is dedicated to providing participating countries with information to improve teaching and learning in science and mathematics. This book is written especially for the interest of undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and educators of science education who wish to know more about the contributing factors to Grade 8 students’ science achievement in TIMSS. This book is also resourceful for individuals who are involved, directly or indirectly, in the administration and implementation of TIMSS at the national, state, district, and school levels. This book consists of seven chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to TIMSS which includes the TIMSS curriculum model and TIMSS science assessment frameworks. The subsequent chapters compare the contribution of various factors, i.e., home environment support, school resources, school climate, teacher preparation, and classroom instructions on Malaysian and Singaporean Grade 8 students’ science achievement in TIMSS 2011. Last but not least, recommendations on ways to improve Malaysian Grade 8 students’ science achievement in the forthcoming TIMSS are suggested based on the experiences of the Singaporean education system.

Distance Education by David Sewart,Desmond Keegan,Borje Holmberg Pdf

Distance education, for long the Cinderella of the educational spectrum, had emerged in the 1970s and early 1980s as a valued component of many national educational systems in both developed and developing countries. The foundation of the Open Universities, developments in communications technology and in audio-, video- and computer-based learning, a new sophistication in the design of print-based materials and better support systems for the student learning at a distance had all contributed to the availability and quality of distance education programmes. Originally published in 1988, this book chronicles this great change in distance education. It presents the best writings on the subject published during the previous ten years. The articles selected for this volume provided a new scholarly basis for the theory and practice of distance education. The editors have brought together contributions from many countries and present authoritative introductions to each of the nine sections. This book provided those in both developed and developing countries with a guideline to one of the most rapidly expanding areas of education at the time.
