Higher Education in Taiwan by Angela Yung-Chi Hou,Tung-liang Chiang,Sheng-Ju Chan Pdf

This book discusses the situation of Taiwanese universities facing a rapidly changing domestic and global environment. It examines the social structure, drawing on professional perspectives, data-based and systematic analysis. The book fills gaps in the literature of higher education systems in East Asia, of which Taiwan is a representative nation. It provides the readers with great opportunities to understand the historical, political and cultural background of the higher education system in Taiwan and shares Taiwan’s experience of how higher education institutions respond to the new challenges such as an ageing society, the pursuit of equity and inclusion, execution of talent recruitment, and the use of technological innovation. Finally the book discusses the implication of institutional research in university governance.

University Rankings by William Yat Wai Lo Pdf

This book adopts a qualitative case study approach to provide the readers with a systematic delineation and interpretation of the implications of the university ranking phenomenon for Taiwan’s higher education system. It reviews the literature on different theories concerning the global transformation of higher education and presents basic information on higher education in Taiwan. The author develops a four-dimensional framework for the analysis of the ranking phenomenon in the island-state. First, the technological/ecological dimension aims to look into how the rankings have impacted Taiwan’s higher education based on empirical findings from five Taiwanese public universities. Next, the technological/geographical dimension examines how Taiwan can use rankings to promote its interests in global higher education. The two conceptual dimensions focus on the relationship between the rankings and power in higher education. They show how the phenomenon can be read and explained through theoretical lenses from ecological and geographical perspectives. From an ecological perspective, the empirical evidence suggests that the influence of rankings varies throughout the academic hierarchy in Taiwan. The theoretical analysis then illustrates the relationship between the ranking phenomenon and the power structure in academic hierarchy. Geographically, while the empirical analysis is based on data from Taiwan, the theoretical analysis offers essential insights that help readers to understand the changing global landscape of higher education and its implications in East Asia.

English as a Medium of Instruction in Higher Education by Wenli Tsou,Shin-Mei Kao Pdf

This book presents the multiple facets of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in higher education across various academic disciplines, an area that is expected to grow constantly in response to the competitive global higher education market. The studies presented were conducted in various EMI classrooms, with data collected from observing and documenting the teaching activities, and from interviewing or surveying EMI participants. Through data analysis and synthesis, cases across disciplines – from engineering, science, technology, business, social science, medical science, design and arts, to tourism and leisure service sectors – are used to illustrate the various EMI curriculum designs and classroom practices. Although the cases described are limited to Taiwanese institutions, the book bridges the gap between planning and executing EMI programs across academic domains for policy makers, administrators, content teachers, and teacher trainers throughout Asia.

Teacher Education in Taiwan by Shen-Keng Yang,Jia-Li Huang Pdf

Since the Teacher Education Act was in place in 1994, student teachers were educated through diverse educational institutions instead of the traditional normal schools (Taiwan’s equivalent of teachers’ colleges). But such market-based teacher education has been altered by politics, society and culture in the direction of government-controlled teacher education, particularly in the quality evaluation of teacher education. Taiwan maintains teacher education quality by controlling the number of teachers, using teacher assessment to eliminate teachers who are not up to standard, evaluating teacher education institutions, evaluating professional development of teachers to raise elementary and secondary teacher quality. This book uses Taiwan as a case study to analyze the transformation of teacher education in a country which goes through political, economic and societal transitions, along the axis of state regulation vs marketization. It analyzes the uniqueness of Taiwanese teacher education for international reference, and draws implications for teacher education policies in the context of education reform. The Formation of Two Approaches to Teacher Education Teacher Education Policy and Policy Direction in Taiwan The Ideology, Implications, Applications of Teacher Profession Standards The Teacher Education Strategic Alliances in Taiwan This book will interest policy makers, researchers and students in the field of education, especially in teacher education and comparative education.

Higher Education and Belief Systems in the Asia Pacific Region by Alexander Jun,Christopher S. Collins Pdf

This book underscores the role of belief and knowledge that are outside the canons of science, as they are not often considered within the core functions of a university. It explores various ways in which belief systems are part of the fabric of higher education – either implicitly or explicitly – and pursues a deeper understanding of the role of belief practices as it plays out in both private and public higher education. The broad variety of geographic locations and belief systems represented here demonstrate the ways in which implicit and explicit belief systems affect higher education. The book is unique in its breadth of coverage, but also in its depth of exploration regarding how belief systems function in society through the avenue of higher education, which is often a central site for the production and dissemination of knowledge.

Handbook of Education Policy Studies by Guorui Fan,Thomas S. Popkewitz Pdf

This open access handbook brings together the latest research from a wide range of internationally influential scholars to analyze educational policy research from international, historical and interdisciplinary perspectives. By effectively breaking through the boundaries between countries and disciplines, it presents new theories, techniques and methods for contemporary education policy, and illustrates the educational policies and educational reform practices that various countries have introduced to meet the challenges of continuous change. This volume focuses on policies and changes in schools and classrooms. The studies on school changes present the differences in the policies and challenges of K-12 schools and universities in different countries and regions, and in connection with the contradictions and conflicts between tradition and modernization, as well as the changing roles of various stakeholders, especially that of teachers. In terms of curriculum and instruction, many countries have undertaken experiments and introduced changes based on two major themes: “what to teach” and “how to teach”. International education assessments represented by PISA not only promote the improvement and extensive application of educational assessment and testing techniques, but have also had far-reaching impacts on education policies and education reforms in many countries. Focusing on the changes in educational policies at the micro level, this volume comprehensively reveals the complex interactions between school organizations, teachers, curricula, teaching and learning, evaluation and other elements within the education system, as well as the latest related reforms worldwide.

Internationalization of Higher Education in East Asia by Ka-Ho Mok,Kar Ming Yu Pdf

The rise in demand for higher education in the Asia-Pacific region is an undeniable reflection of the growing pace of globalization and the subsequent pressures imposed by it. Aspiring to become globally competitive and to position favourably in the global university league tables, governments in Asia have either engaged in a serious quest to become a regional education hub or they have concentrated on developing transnational higher education to create more opportunities, in order to meet their citizens’ pressing demand for higher education. Internationalization of Higher Education in East Asia critically examines and provides comparative perspectives on the major strategies that selected Asian countries and societies have adopted to transform their higher education sector and enhance their national competitiveness in the increasingly globalized world. This volume by leading scholars in the field of education development and policy studies makes critical reflections on how Asian governments in particular and universities in general have responded to the growing challenges of globalization by promoting more internationalization, student mobility and entrepreneurship in higher education. This book is an essential collection for policy makers, researchers and postgraduate students studying higher education, Asian education and international education.
