Inflammation and the Microcirculation by D. Neil Granger,Elena Senchenkova Pdf

The microcirculation is highly responsive to, and a vital participant in, the inflammatory response. All segments of the microvasculature (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) exhibit characteristic phenotypic changes during inflammation that appear to be directed toward enhancing the delivery of inflammatory cells to the injured/infected tissue, isolating the region from healthy tissue and the systemic circulation, and setting the stage for tissue repair and regeneration. The best characterized responses of the microcirculation to inflammation include impaired vasomotor function, reduced capillary perfusion, adhesion of leukocytes and platelets, activation of the coagulation cascade, and enhanced thrombosis, increased vascular permeability, and an increase in the rate of proliferation of blood and lymphatic vessels. A variety of cells that normally circulate in blood (leukocytes, platelets) or reside within the vessel wall (endothelial cells, pericytes) or in the perivascular space (mast cells, macrophages) are activated in response to inflammation. The activation products and chemical mediators released from these cells act through different well-characterized signaling pathways to induce the phenotypic changes in microvessel function that accompany inflammation. Drugs that target a specific microvascular response to inflammation, such as leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion or angiogenesis, have shown promise in both the preclinical and clinical studies of inflammatory disease. Future research efforts in this area will likely identify new avenues for therapeutic intervention in inflammation. Inflammatory Processes: by L. Gordon Letts,Douglas W. Morgan Pdf

In November 1998 many of the key leaders of new drug discovery for inflammatory diseases gathered at Hershey, Pennsylvania for the 9th International Conference of the Inflammation Research Association. The Conference was held over a five day period and provided a stimulating environment for the open exchange of important advances in basic inflammation research as well as new drug discovery and development. This book encompasses some of the highlights of several presentations made at the Conference. It contains some of the latest and important developments in the field of inflammation research. Topics include the status of eotaxin and chemokines in asthma and allergy, signal transduction and regulation of diverse mediators such as the JNK group of MAP kinases, TNF and IL-1 signaling of NF-kB as well as regulators of AP-1, macrophage metalloproteinases, lymphotoxin and further insights into the role of MCP-1 in disease. Also discussed are drug targets in rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, fibrotic diseases,...

Fundamentals of Inflammation by Charles N. Serhan,Peter A. Ward,Derek W. Gilroy Pdf

The acute inflammatory response is the body's first system of alarm signals that are directed toward containment and elimination of microbial invaders. Uncontrolled inflammation has emerged as a pathophysiologic basis for many widely occurring diseases in the general population. This book provides an introduction to the cell types, chemical mediators, and general mechanisms of the host's first response to invasion.

The Inflammatory Process by Benjamin W. Zweifach,Lester Grant,Robert T. McCluskey Pdf

The Inflammatory Process, Second Edition is an account of the inflammatory process and covers topics ranging from cell surface phenomena and connective tissue to the role of the formed elements of the blood in inflammatory states, particularly in the light of the rapidly burgeoning literature on platelet physiology. The life history and functional capacities of leukocytes are also examined, along with chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and the mechanisms responsible for tissue damage in inflammation. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the experimental approach to the study of inflammation, followed by a discussion on the biochemistry of the mammalian plasma membrane. The reader is then introduced to cell injury; chemotaxis; phagocytosis; and lysosomal mechanisms in the inflammatory process. Subsequent chapters deal with the inflammatory process at the cellular level, paying particular attention to neutrophil leukocytes; the metabolism and physiology of mononuclear phagocytes; the role of platelets in inflammatory reactions; and structural and biochemical characteristics of mast cells. This book will be of interest to practitioners in fields ranging from biochemistry to pathology, bacteriology, physiology, and immunology.

Cooperation of Liver Cells in Health and Disease by Z. Kmiec Pdf

It is only during the last decade that the functions of sinusoidal endothelial cells, Kupffer cells, hepatic stellate cells, pit cells and other intrahepatic lymphocytes have been better understood. The development of methods for isolation and co-culturing various types of liver cells has established that they communicate and cooperate via secretion of various intercellular mediators. This monograph summarizes multiple data that suggest the important role of cellular cross-talk for the functions of both normal and diseased liver. Special features of the book include concise presentation of the majority of detailed data in 19 tables. Original schemes allow for the clear illustration of complicated intercellular relationships. This is the first ever presentation of the newly emerging field of liver biology, which is important for hepatic function in health and disease and opens new avenues for therapeutic interventions.

Biochemistry of Inflammation by J. Whicher,S.W. Evans Pdf

Our understanding of inflammation has increased rapidly in recent years, due in large part to the impact of molecular biology and gene identification and cloning. This book brings together ideas from a number of different biochemical disciplines which are frequently not integrated. The first chapter gives a visual overview of the subject; the remaining chapters are organized into three themes: the affector molecules, the regulatory components and the processes of inflammation itself. This book is essential reading for the busy physician or pathologist who wants to be up-to-date with the latest developments in immunology as they affect the diagnosis and treatment of many conditions.

Encyclopedia of Inflammatory Diseases by Anonim Pdf

Inflammation has become one of the most exciting and rewarding areas of medical research. Recent years have seen a revolution in our understanding of how blood and tissue cells interact and of the intracellular mechanisms controlling their activation. This has revealed the underlying inflammatory pathology of many diseases and provided multiple new targets for anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory therapy. The Encyclopedia of Inflammatory Diseases will cover the following areas: Inflammatory Processes and Cells Inflammatory Diseases Mediators of Inflammation Pharmacology of Inflammation Since inflammatory diseases and their therapy cover a broad range of scientific and medical fields, the encyclopedia will be co-edited by four international experts, a clinician and three researchers from the disciplines of immunology, biochemistry, and pharmacology, in this way providing students, basic and clinical scientists and practitioners in academia, hospitals and industry with valuable interlinked information. This living project will serve as a reliable and comprehensive data pool for everybody working in inflammation research. Owing to its dynamic nature, it will grow with time and future editions, becoming an indispensible source of information for academia, clinical practitioners and industry.
