J.B. Rhine by J.B. Rhine Pdf

During the 1930s a new approach to exploring human consciousness began at Duke University with Professor J. B. Rhine's experimental research on extra-sensory perception, or ESP. His findings on telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition and psychokinesis challenged conventional disbelief. Rhine's findings and his first popular book, New Frontiers of the Mind, ignited excitement and controversy--among not only scientists but the public at large. Rhine's letters chronicle his efforts to find reliable evidence of psychic ability, from the seance room to psychic animals and finally to a university research laboratory. Covering the years 1923-1939, they reveal a gripping story of groundbreaking research, told in the words of the main player as he worked with his team, subjects, critics and supporters alike.

Extra-Sensory Perception After Sixty Years by Joseph Banks Rhine,J. Gaither Pratt Pdf

Extrasensory Perception After Sixty Years: A Critical Appraisal of the Research in Extra-Sensory Perception, which was first published in 1940, represented the follow-up to parapsychologist Joseph Banks Rhine’s 1934 book, Extrasensory Perception. In Extrasensory Perception After Sixty Years: A Critical Appraisal of the Research in Extra-Sensory Perception, Rhine and his colleagues endeavor to present a complete review of the recent research in ESP and to include in their survey “everything that is of importance to know in deciding whether ESP occurs. and what it is like if it does occur.” Using three experiments that they believed demonstrated ESP, namely the Pearce-Pratt experiment, the Pratt-Woodruff experiment, and the Ownbey-Zirkle series, the book’s first two parts deal with the question of whether ESP does occur. The formulation of the problem is presented, the mathematical and experimental methods used in attempting its solution, a survey of results obtained, and a consideration of the adequacy of some 35 hypotheses proposed as explanations alternative to ESP. Part II presents a survey of published criticisms and critical comments invited for this volume, whilst Part III considers the nature of ESP; the incidence of ESP ability; conditions that affect ESP performance; physical relations of ESP; ESP as a psychological process. The final part sketches “the outstanding problems that still remain unsolved, the methods under contemplation by which they may possibly be solved, and the further needs and prospects which confront investigators.” The present volume includes 21 appendices, a detailed glossary, as well as a list of 361 references.

Eyewitness accounts, unpublished photos and never before published documents from the archives of the Rhine Research Foundation provide fresh perspective on the events that inspired the novel, and later the film, The Exorcist.

The Reception Of Unconventional Science by Seymore H Mauskopf Pdf

The issue of perhaps greatest concern to historians of science today is the internalist-externalist dichotomy. This volume directly addresses that issue, at the same time providing a context for the serious study of heterodox science and scientific theories. The book consists of four studies, each of which considers the response of a scientific community to an unconventional theory or claim: the acausal physics of Heisenberg; Wegener's geological theory of continental drift; acupuncture; and the statistical argument for extrasensory perception. As they reveal a wide range of reactions to orthodoxy, the studies themselves exemplify the range of approaches the historian may use in examining scientific unconventionality.

Extra Sensory Perception by Gertrude Raffel Schmeidler Pdf

If extrasensory perception is a common human ability, why can't we all score high on ESP tests? This book answersthe question by describing psychological determinants ofsuccess and failure in extrasensory perception. Some ofthe most signifi cant points raised in the editor's enlighteningintroduction are developed in greater detail in thenine essays that follow, all of them important statementsgiving a clear picture of research into ESP and the debatethat surrounds it. Each essay is followed by a commentrelating the essay to the field as a whole. In essays on the debate about ESP, an attack (by C. E.M. Hansel) is followed by a rebuttal (by J. B. Rhine and J.G. Pratt), off ering the reader insight into the peculiar tensionsurrounding the ESP controversy. The book also includes abalanced overview of problems in the field by J. C. Crumbaugh, and six other essays on the psychological factors thatinfl uence research on ESP. Controversy over ESP is of specialinterest also because the questions critics raise relate closelyto problems within psychology itself. In addition, the essaysreflect a quality common to much research: the excitementof uncovering results that advance our knowledge. This book is intended for supplementary course use.Because of the fundamental problems it addresses, italso off ers richly rewarding reading for all teaching andpracticing psychologists as well as for the interested generalist.A substantial number of research reports are citedthroughout, so that any reader seeking further informationwill find the cited references invaluable. Gertrude Schmeidler is professor emeritus of psychology atCity College, City University of New York. She has held theposition of president of the Parapsychological Association andthe American Society for Psychical Research. She is the authorof Parapsychology: Its Relation to Physics, Biology, Psychology, and Psychiatry; Parapsychology and Psychology: Matches andMismatches; and ESP and Personality Patterns.
