Let the Church Sing! by Thérèse Smith Pdf

An examination of worldviews, religious belief and ritual as seen through the musical performances of one Afro-American Baptist church in a small black community in rural Mississippi. "Let the Church Sing!" Music and Worship in a Black Mississippi Community is based on years of fieldwork by an Irish ethnomusicologist, who examines, in more detail than ever before, how various facets of the Clear Creek citizens' worldview find expression through religious ritual and music. Thérèse Smith, though originally very much an outsider, gradually found herself welcomed into Clear Creek by members and officials of the Clear Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She was permitted to record many hours' worth of sermons and singing and engaged in community events as a participant-observer. In addition, she conducted plentiful interviews, not just at Clear Creek but, for comparison, at Main St. Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky. All of this enables her to analyze in detail how music is interwoven in the worship service, how people feel about the music that they make and hear, and, more generally, how the religious views so vividly expressed help the Church's members think about the relationship between themselves, their community, and the larger world. Music and prayer enable the members and leaders of the Church to bring the realm of the spiritual into intersection with the material world in a particularly active way. The book is enriched by extensive musical transcriptions and an accompanying CD of recordings from actual church services, and these are examined in detail in the book itself. Thérèse Smith is in the Music Department, University College, Dublin.

Sing! by Keith Getty,Kristyn Getty Pdf

Sing! has grown from Keith and Kristyn Getty’s passion for congregational singing; it’s been formed by their traveling and playing and listening and discussing and learning and teaching all over the world. And in writing it, they have five key aims: • to discover why we sing and the overwhelming joy and holy privilege that comes with singing • to consider how singing impacts our hearts and minds and all of our lives • to cultivate a culture of family singing in our daily home life • to equip our churches for wholeheartedly singing to the Lord and one another as an expression of unity • to inspire us to see congregational singing as a radical witness to the world They have also added a few “bonus tracks” at the end with some more practical suggestions for different groups who are more deeply involved with church singing. God intends for this compelling vision of His people singing—a people joyfully joining together in song with brothers and sisters around the world and around his heavenly throne—to include you. He wants you,he wants us, to sing.

Come, Let Us Sing to the Lord by Katherine Kennedy Steiner Pdf

The Word of God as it has been received by the church has embedded in it dozens of songs. Each of these songs has a story to tell us about God and God's people. In brief meditations, twelve faculty at Wycliffe College explore Songs of Scripture in this volume to answer the questions "Why do Scriptures tell us to sing? What are we to sing? What does singing make of us?" Each of these meditations will give you a new appreciation for God's gift of songs. By singing the words of Scripture, we tune our hearts to God's song.

Let the People Sing by Paul Westermeyer Pdf

For centuries, the voices of diverse Christian congregations have been empowered by shared, ecumenical hymns. In Let the People Sing: Hymn Tunes in Perspective, Paul Westermeyer provides a broad overview of selected hymn tunes, analyzing each for genre, earliest sources, creativity, and congregational appeal. Westermeyer completed a survey of 14 modern, multi--denominational English-language hymnals to find the tunes most representative of those sung in today's church. Organized chronologically, this study moves from the earliest tunes to those of the late 20th century. Although not encyclopedic in nature, Let the People Saying was inspired by Erik Routley's comprehensive work The Music of Christian Hymns, to which reference is often made. The author includes perspectives on various topics throughout, including the role of instruments in congregational singing, rote singing, the importance of appropriate tempo, and threats to the people's song. Thoroughly annotated, Let the People Saying also includes an appendix with Tune of the Day suggestions and an extensive bibliography for those desiring further study. This landmark book is a journey worth taking for church musicians, pastors, teachers, and anyone interested in enhancing congregational song. - Jacket flap.
