Meeting report of the WHO expert consultation on drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment outcome definitions, 17–19 November 2020 by Anonim Pdf

Recent developments in TB treatment have prompted the need for revision of the TB treatment outcome definitions. An online expert consultation meeting organized by WHO’s Global TB Programme in November 2020 was to determine recent changes in TB treatment affecting treatment outcome definitions and discuss options for changing the definitions. The consultation led WHO to propose new treatment outcome definitions for drug-susceptible TB (DS-TB) and drug-resistant TB (DR-TB). The purpose of this publication is to summarise changes in the definitions of tuberculosis treatment outcomes, arising after the expert consultation. The publication is to inform a wide audience about the new definitions of TB treatment outcomes so that these definitions are readily adopted and used, globally.

The first high-priority Target Product Profile (TPPs) for new tuberculosis diagnostics were launched in April 2014. Following advances in the TB diagnostics and treatment pipelines since the release of these TPPs as well as recent updates to WHO TB treatment and diagnostics guidelines, a revision process of this TPP was initiated. The objective of the revision was to steer the R&D pipeline discussions to address current diagnostic gaps, seeking alignment with and patient and population needs.

WHO consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis. Module 4 by World Health Organization Pdf

Between 2011 and 2019, WHO has developed and issued evidence-based policy recommendations on the treatment and care of patients with DR-TB. These policy recommendations have been presented in several WHO documents and their associated annexes, including the WHO Consolidated Guidelines on Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Treatment, issued by WHO in March 2019. The policy recommendations in each of these guidelines have been developed by WHO-convened Guideline Development Groups, using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach to summarize the evidence, and formulate policy recommendations and accompanying remarks. The present WHO Consolidated Guidelines on Tuberculosis, Module 4: Treatment - Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Treatment includes a comprehensive set of WHO recommendations for the treatment and care of DR-TB. The document includes two new recommendations, one on the composition of shorter regimens and one on the use of the BPaL regimen (i.e. bedaquiline, pretomanid and linezolid). In addition, the consolidated guidelines include existing recommendations on treatment regimens for isoniazid-resistant TB and MDR/RR-TB, including longer regimens, culture monitoring of patients on treatment, the timing of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in MDR/RR-TB patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the use of surgery for patients receiving MDR-TB treatment, and optimal models of patient support and care. The guidelines are to be used primarily in national TB programmes, or their equivalents in Ministries of Health, and for other policy-makers and technical organizations working on TB and infectious diseases in public and private sectors and in the community.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Its Prevention by Takefumi Saito,Masahiro Narita,Charles L. Daley Pdf

Every year, 10 million people fall ill with tuberculosis (TB) in the world, and of those, 1.5 million people die even though it is a preventable and curable disease. As a result, TB remains the world’s leading infectious cause of death. On the other hand, in industrialized countries, the TB incidence has fallen to a historic low, and clinicians’ experience with TB diminished significantly in recent years. Additional challenges for clinicians include atypical presentation of TB in the immunocompromised, especially among the elderly, and an increasing number of patients with drug-resistant TB. Delayed diagnosis of TB leads to the spread of TB including nosocomial transmission because TB is an air-borne infectious disease, and suboptimal treatment can result in development of drug resistance. Furthermore, treatment of latent TB infection (LTBI) can prevent future TB cases but it has been under-utilized despite recent innovations in diagnosis and treatment regimens of LTBI. This book focuses on advances in diagnostic tools and treatment for both TB disease and latent TB infection. Each chapter/topic is written by one of the top TB experts in the field and the authors are from Japan and the US. Pulmonary Tuberculosis and its Prevention offers up-to-date information that can be incorporated into a busy practice of clinicians while they can appreciate broad international perspectives and gain in-depth knowledge on TB.

WHO operational handbook on tuberculosis. Module 5 by World Health Organization Pdf

The aim of this operational handbook is to provide practical guidance on the implementation of the World Health Organization (WHO) policy recommendations on the prevention and management of TB in children and adolescents under programmatic circumstances and at different levels of the health system. The practical guidance aims to inform the development or revision of national policies and related implementation guidance (e.g. handbooks, standard operating procedures) on the management of TB in children and adolescents. This handbook can also help countries adequately plan for the uptake of interventions to better address the specific needs of children and adolescents with or at risk of TB. It can contribute to national efforts to build capacity among national and subnational programme managers and among health workers at all levels of the health care system. The target audience for this handbook includes NTPs and other child health programmes that provide care for children with or at risk of TB, including maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health programmes, HIV services, and PHC programmes. The handbook also targets paediatricians and other health care workers (HCWs) in the public and private sectors, school health services, civil society and community-based organizations, and health care educators.
