Nanotechnology. Challenges and Opportunities by Friederike Berg Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Physics - Applied physics, grade: 4.0, , language: English, abstract: In this paper, it describes nanotechnology as a technology that will change the world. This technology is briefly explained to get a general understanding of the term and its origins. The second chapter states the different types of nanorobotics, their functionality and where they have been invented. The third chapter states the essential applications of nanotechnology and their research progress. The following chapter describes groups of interests and three well-known nanotechnology start-ups. The fifth chapter contrasts the challenges and opportunities of this technology. The conclusion summarizes the paper and ends with a personal opinion. Artificial intelligence and small devices are part of our daily life. According to Elon Musk, a serial entrepreneur, artificial intelligence continues to advance and humans will be subordinated. Avoiding this scenario, humans need a digital layer of intelligence made by nanotechnology on their brains. The digital layer allows people to link their brains to a computer which lets them imagine living in a virtual world, to send messages to their friends and to transmit thoughts to a wireless cloud. Phones and smartwatches are becoming redundant. Besides the implementation of a digital layer on our brains to make us super-humans, nanotechnology can also help our bodies to be hyper healthy. A nanorobotic (short: nanobots or nanorobots) is a machine that builds and manipulates objects at an atomic level from atomic building blocks. It can be imagined similar to Lego bricks which can be plugged, picked and placed like atoms. Humans consist of countless nanobots that operate within our cells and keep them alive. Each of them has a specific function such as creating a unique structure made of proteins or DNA. Nanobots can also build an assembler which is a machine that can create any kind of structure at a nanoscale that is thermodynamically stable.

Nanotechnology and the Challenges of Equity, Equality and Development by Susan E. Cozzens,Jameson Wetmore Pdf

Nanotechnology is enabling applications in materials, microelectronics, health, and agriculture, which are projected to create the next big shift in production, comparable to the industrial revolution. Such major shifts always co-evolve with social relationships. This book focuses on how nanotechnologies might affect equity/equality in global society. Nanotechnologies are likely to open gaps by gender, ethnicity, race, and ability status, as well as between developed and developing countries, unless steps are taken now to create a different outcome. Organizations need to change their practices, and cultural ideas must be broadened if currently disadvantaged groups are to have a more equal position in nano-society rather than a more disadvantaged one. Economic structures are likely to shift in the nano-revolution, requiring policymakers and participatory processes to invent new institutions for social welfare, better suited to the new economic order than those of the past.

Advances and Challenges in Nanomedicine by Susan Hua,Sherry Y. Wu Pdf

Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field that is revolutionizing the way we detect and treat damage to the human body. Nanomedicine applies nanotechnology to highly specific medical interventions for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. They are increasingly being used to overcome biological barriers in the body to improve the way we deliver compounds to specific tissues and organs. In particular, nanomedicines have been shown to be beneficial for stabilizing therapeutic compounds, overcoming obstacles to cellular and tissue uptake, and improving biodistribution of compounds to target sites in vivo. Nanomedicines have demonstrated significant therapeutic advantages for a multitude of biomedical applications, however the clinical translation of these nanotechnology platforms has not progressed as quickly as the plethora of positive results would have suggested. Understanding the advances in nanomedicine to date and the challenges that still need to be overcome, will allow future research to improve on existing platforms and to address the current translational and regulatory limitations. This eBook “Advances and Challenges in Nanomedicine” has brought together experts in the fields of nanomedicine, nanotechnology, nanotoxicology, pharmaceutics, manufacturing, and translation to discuss the application of nanotechnology to drug delivery. This information is presented as original research, opinion, perspective, and review articles. The goal of this eBook is to generate collaborative discussion on the current status, general trends, challenges, strategies, and future direction of pharmaceutical nanotechnology, as well as highlight current and emerging nanoparticulate platforms with potential medical applications.

Triennial Review of the National Nanotechnology Initiative by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,National Materials and Manufacturing Board,Committee on Triennial Review of the National Nanotechnology Initiative Pdf

Nanoscale science, engineering, and technology, often referred to simply as "nanotechnology," is the understanding, characterization, and control of matter at the scale of nanometers, the dimension of atoms and molecules. Advances in nanotechnology promise new materials and structures that are the basis of solutions, for example, for improving human health, optimizing available energy and water resources, supporting a vibrant economy, raising the standard of living, and increasing national security. Established in 2001, the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) is a coordinated, multiagency effort with the mission to expedite the discovery, development, and deployment of nanoscale science and technology to serve the public good. This report is the latest triennial review of the NNI called for by the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act of 2003. It examines and comments on the mechanisms in use by the NNI to advance focused areas of nanotechnology towards advanced development and commercialization and on the physical and human infrastructure needs for successful realization in the United States of the benefits of nanotechnology development.

Gigantic Challenges, Nano Solutions by Maher S. Amer Pdf

For the past three decades, nanoscale science and engineering have provided many systems with unique and unprecedented properties, illustrating that these will definitely determine the trajectory of science and technology for years to come. This book is the first textbook to introduce nanoscale systems in a pedagogical, and not research, style. Through ample examples and problems, it emphasizes the difference between bulk and nanoscale systems from a thermodynamic viewpoint and illustrates the process when a bulk system enters the nanoscale domain. It also brings together results of state-of-the-art research and provides the reader with the scientific foundations of such results. It introduces the fundamental thermodynamic treatment of nanoscale systems as well as the structure, properties, and performance of the three different types of fullerenes, namely, spherical, cylindrical, and planar or graphene. In addition, it discusses 2-D materials systems based on such building blocks. Finally, it shows the thermodynamic criteria allowing nanoscale performance in physically huge systems.
