Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world. Still the only major text on the subject, the completely revised and updated second edition of Parkinson's Disease: Diagnosis and Clinical Management comes at a time when specialists have made important advances in our understanding of the etiology, pathogenesis, investigation, and management of Parkinson's disease. The book includes 23 completely new chapters, and has updated information on: Genetics Pathology Biomarkers Pathogenesis Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease Updated outcome measures Complementary and alternative medicine for the treatment of Parkinson's disease Together the chapters form a comprehensive review of the many issues facing PD physicians today. Lucid and easily readable from beginning to end, each chapter may also stand on its own as a scholarly review of the individual subject. Each one is concisely written and heavily referenced for this purpose. The second edition of Parkinson's Disease: Diagnosis and Clinical Management provides a state-of-the-art review of where we've been, where we are now, and where we are going in treating this disease.

Natural Products and Neuroprotection by Cristina Angeloni,David Vauzour Pdf

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, are the most common pathologies of the central nervous system currently without a cure. They share common molecular and cellular characteristics, including protein misfolding, mitochondrial dysfunction, glutamate toxicity, dysregulation of calcium homeostasis, oxidative stress, inflammation, and ageing, which contribute to neuronal death. Efforts to treat these diseases are often limited by their multifactorial etiology. Natural products, thanks to their multitarget activities, are considered promising alternatives for the treatment of neurodegeneration. This book deals with two different forms of natural products: extracts and isolated compounds. The study of the bioactivity of the extracts is extremely important as many studies have demonstrated the synergistic effect of the combination of different natural products. On the other hand, the investigation of the activity of specifically isolated natural products can be also important to understand their cellular and molecular mechanisms and to define the specific bioactive components in extracts or foods. This book can be considered an important contribution to knowledge of the neuroprotective effect of natural products and presents a great deal of information, related to both the benefits but also the limitations of their use in counteracting neurodegeneration.

Neurological disease affects nearly 25%–30% of the world’s population, exerting enormous financial strain on the healthcare system. Estimated current costs are around $800 annual billion, and this number is expected to increase exponentially as the global population ages. As such, new and alternative neuroprotective strategies are urgently needed. This book examines some of the most promising approaches in neuroprotection as well as discusses current goals and prospects. Organized into three sections, chapters cover such topics as the use of cannabinoids, medicinal plants, and essential oils in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; protein misfolding and the neuroprotective potential of vitamin E in cerebral ischemia; and potential new neurological treatments and their mechanisms of action.

Neuroprotection is a strategy to prevent or delay the progression of chronic neurodegenerative diseases, acute neurological disorders, or even mental disorders. The major aim of this book is to focus on different approaches to achieve neuroprotection. In this book, there are chapters discussing imidazoline ligands and opioid ligands in Alzheimer's disease, the beneficial effects of adenosine A2A receptor antagonist, adrenergic receptor agonists and antagonists modulating microglial responses, and different approaches to achieve neuroprotection against aging-associated macular degeneration. This book will give insights to scientists in the field to stimulate their research, medical professionals to review their clinical practices, and others who would like to learn more about different neuroprotective approaches.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease — State of the Art by Horst Przuntek,Thomas Müller Pdf

Expert clinicians and basic scientists with a special interest in Parkinson’s disease review the current state of science and clinical therapeutics of the disease. Therefore these articles represent an authorative review of the current state of knowledge regarding preclinical course and symptomatology, subtypes with their impact on the pathology, genetic alterations, novel mechanisms of neuronal cell death, diagnostic tools and old and novel therapeutic approaches with respect to neuroprotection and neuroregeneration in Parkinson’s disease. Particular emphasis has been placed on a novel antiparkinsonian drug called budipine with various modes of action also influencing altered non dopaminergic systems in Parkinson’s disease. It is evident, that many questions on the cause, course and treatment of Parkinson’s disease are still unanswered and therefore the ideal way to treat a parkinsonian patient remains to be defined.

Mechanisms of Cell Death and Approaches to Neuroprotection/Disease Modification in Parkinson’s Disease by Anonim Pdf

Mechanisms of Cell Death and Approaches to Neuroprotection/Disease Modification in Parkinson’s Disease explores the results of numerous studies surrounding in vitro and animal model evidence that looks at the impact of a-synucleinopathy on neuronal dysfunction and behavioral impairments, (ii) how research in animal models supports the development of therapeutic strategies, and (iii) how findings in animal models might relate to the disease process in humans. In this book, the author's shed light upon the complex scenario of the mechanisms of cell death and approaches to neuroprotection/disease modification in PD, both in vitro to in vivo. Along with degeneration, the pathological hallmark of PD is the presence of intraneuronal proteinaceous cytoplasmic inclusions, named Lewy Bodies (LB) that invade the whole nervous system as the disease progresses. Several fundamental discoveries have shed light upon the implication of the a-syn protein in the pathogenesis of familial and sporadic forms of PD. Other proteins also accumulate in LB, but a-syn is a major protein component of the pathological landmarks. Updates on the latest research surrounding Mechanisms of Cell Death in Parkinson’s Disease Includes In vitro and In vivo models of synucleinopathy Presents therapeutic strategies in Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson's Disease by Charles S. Mittel Pdf

It is an insidious illness with no known cure, afflicting those who suffer from it with near-uncontrollable tremors, speech impairment, and balance problems. In addition, one's intelligence experiences decline. Among its most prominent victims are Muhammad Ali and Michael J Fox. Parkinson's disease is a disorder of certain nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine, which is a chemical messenger that the brain uses to help direct and control movement. In Parkinson's disease, these dopamine-producing nerve cells break down, dopamine levels drop, and brain signals directing movement become abnormal. Usually, the disease begins in later life (in one's 50s or after), although there are cases of 'early-onset' Parkinson's affecting those in their 20s and 30s. Medical science has yet to determine a cause for this illness, although recent tests have seemed to rule out genetics. In addition, there is no known cure, but treatment can lessen some of the symptoms. The importance of understanding Parkinson's disease is quite clear, and medical research in the field is moving ahead, although there are continual battles for funding. across the world. After giving a thorough overview of Parkinson's, the book gives a carefully selected list of abstracts of relevant literature, then provides easy access via author, title, and subject indexes.
