Organization and Management in China, 1979-1990 by Oded Shenkar Pdf

Over the last decade China has engaged in one of the most comprehensive management reforms ever undertaken. These reforms are expected to determine China's ability to modernize and become a major world economic power. At the same time, the reforms touch on major political and social issues within the PRC, thereby affecting the structure and control of Chinese society. The contributors to this volume analyze Chinese management and organizations in seven chapters that assess the impact of the reforms on domestic Chinese enterprises across such diverse issues as decision-making, work values and managerial behaviour, three chapters on foreign joint ventures and three chapters on trade and trade organizations.

Management Issues in China: Volume 1 by David H. Brown,Robin Porter Pdf

This book, first published in 1996, examines the problems associated with the management of change, particularly those brought about by the rapid pace of economic development in China in the ‘reform’ period since 1979. China’s managers were challenged as never before as the country integrated itself into the world economy, introduced new technology, and decentralized control over its industries. This book discusses their successes and failures in chapters by specialists in Chinese management practice.

China After Socialism: In the Footsteps of Eastern Europe or East Asia? by Barrett L. McCormick,Jonathan Unger Pdf

Nine specialists from four continents address the following questions: is China moving toward the type of developmental state and sophisticated economic powerhouse associated with the East Asian miracle? does China's Leninist political system and the heritage of a state-run-heavy-industrial sector present too great a burden for successful transformation? and what is the likelihood that China's party-state will ultimately collapse in a fashion similar to the Leninist governments of Europe? The findings and analyses should prove interesting to followers of China, East Asia as a whole, and the European postcommunist transition.

The transfer of management knowledge to China: building learning communities rather than translating Western textbooks? by Sue Newell Pdf

The People's Republic of China (PRC) is home to 25 per cent of the world's population. This makes it potentially the biggest market for goods and services in the world. It is not surprising, therefore, that following the economic reforms, which were started in 1979, China has been seen as a major growth area for those seeking global market opportunities.

The Management of Enterprises in the People's Republic of China aims to contribute to the knowledge base of management within the Chinese context. The book begins with a mapping of research on management in PRC, and offers theoretical insights for cross-context, institutional, and behavioral studies. It then reports the results of fourteen empirical studies of management issues in the PRC firms. The issues studied include SOE transformation, globalization, governance, employment relationships, managerial networks, corporate culture and leadership. Also included are studies on the knowledge management process and management team characteristics of high technology firms. The methods of study include large-scale surveys, case studies, and interviews. The contributors are international experts in Chinese management research. Finally, we offer executive perspectives on several successful firms operating in China through interviews with their CEOs.

China's Domestic Private Firms: by Anne S. Tsui,Yanjie Bian Pdf

One of the most important outcomes of market reforms in China over the past 20 years has been the emergence of a significant domestic private sector, which now accounts for almost a third of China's GDP and is by far the country's most important source of employment growth. This book is the first in-depth analysis of the management and operation of these domestic private firms, which are defined as companies or organizations created by PRC citizens, including township enterprises and collectives. The book provides a comprehensive and multidisciplinary perspective on the factors important to the successful operation and growth of these firms. It begins with a review of the literature on the topic in three different disciplines - economics, sociology, and management - each followed by several chapters covering recent developments in these areas. Featuring contributions by distinguished scholars and China experts, the work concludes with an insightful chapter on the future of China's public sector in the global economy.

Cultural Problems within International Joint Ventures in China by Michael Amtmann Pdf

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Since the reforms of 1979, the People`s Republic of China`s (PRC) economy has experienced significant growth. There is no doubt that this economic expansion has been a direct result of the opening up of Chinese companies to foreign investors. The number of sino-foreign joint-ventures, which are by the way a privileged form of investment granted by the Chinese government, has been increasing rapidly. According to Chinese statistics, at the end of 1998, Chinese-foreign joint-ventures represented approximately two thirds of about 300 000 foreign investment projects that were approved by Chinese authorities. In fact, among the developing countries, China is currently the one which attracts the most western investments. Joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, China pushed this development even further and while other countries were fighting a recession at the same time, it was able to sustain a growth of 7.8% regarding the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 14.1% with respect to exports and 10.4% regarding imports. Consequently there is steady interest of foreign companies to form joint-ventures in the People's Republic of China. But whereas in the 1980ies mostly the huge corporations where entering this market, nowadays more and more midsized companies, for instance from Germany, are forming joint-ventures too. From the region Mittelfranken for example 320 businesses have developed ties with the People s Republic a plus of 60% from 1996. Many foreign firms are considering entering joint-ventures in China because this seems to offer the most attractive method for gaining access to the huge potential of the labour pool and market of China. Nonetheless, there are many warnings about the problems that have to be faced in order to establish a joint-venture in China. Chief among these is the problem of differing management styles between Foreign and Chinese partners. Very little accurate information is available about Sino-Foreign joint-ventures. An example is the wide disparity in the reports of the numbers of Sino-German joint-ventures. It is not surprising, therefore, that the majority of research studies have focused on identifying the number and the internal structures of these joint-ventures rather than on the practical problems of managing these businesses effectively. Beyond problems of identifying active ventures, research on Chinese-German joint-ventures is hampered by other difficulties: collecting data that [...]

Rivalry and Revolution in South and East Asia by Partha S. Ghosh Pdf

First published in 1997, this study reveals the forces of nationalism and internationalism at work side by side in the populous and volatile regions of South and East Asia which make up the 11 chapters of this volume. They cover regional security, political economy, territorial disputes and national unification. Problems such as those of Cambodia and the nuclearization of India, Pakistan and North Korea create serious international concern, while unresolved regional issues force nationalistic and military conflict. The irresistible popular pressure for economic integration with the global system, often without any corresponding commitment to political freedom, underlies it all. The cumulative effect of these diverse processes creates an explosive mix of international rivalries and national revolutions which raises the question of the possible arrival of the ‘Asian Century’.

Organising Labour in Globalising Asia by Andrew Brown,Jane Hutchison Pdf

This book offers wide-ranging insights into the organising capacities of workers in Asia today. Nine case-studies examine workers' responses to class relations through independent unions, non-government organisations (NGOs) and more (dis)organised struggles. Countering the notion that globalisation holds entirely negative consequences for labour organisation, the authors reveal some of the openings for local activism which can arise from transnational production arrangements. The volume covers the "second-tier" industrializers - China, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Bangladesh. Interdisciplinary in nature, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Asian studies, development studies and international labour studies.
