Peabody in Vintage Postcards by William R. Power Pdf

Peabody was settled in 1626 as Brooksby Village and was originally a part of the town of Salem. In 1752, citizens joined in the area of town known as Salem Village to form the town of Danvers. The separation of the two towns into Danvers and South Danvers took place in 1855. In 1868, the name of South Danvers was changed to Peabody to honor its native son George Peabody. In Peabody, vivid postcards offer a contrasting view of what it was like to live and work in a community having two distinct characters: the town center, with its bustling tanning industries, which soon earned Peabody the sobriquet of "Leather Capital of the World," and the pastoral farming villages of Brookdale, Locustdale, Brooksby, and West Peabody, which portray a sense of life in rural America during this same era.

These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. This fascinating new history of Salem, Massachusetts, showcases more than two hundred of the best vintage postcards available.

Troy in Vintage Postcards by Brian Nielsen,Becky Nielsen Pdf

Troy is situated on the banks of the Hudson River, just ten miles from the state capital of Albany. Well known as the Collar City, it is the home of Uncle Sam and of the largest annual Flag Day parade. It is less well known as being the home of two National Baseball Hall of Famers, Johnny "the Trojan" Evers and Michael "King" Kelly. In its prime, Troy had more than sixty churches, fifteen breweries, and at least a dozen theaters. Troy in Vintage Postcards reveals through the postcard photographer's eyes what the city was like from the early to the mid-1900s, with a few added surprises from the late 1800s. It shows not only how much of Troy has changed but also how much has remained the same.

East Orange captures the tranquillity and innocence of the city at the turn of the century. Columbus, Georgia in Vintage Postcards by Kenneth H. Thomas Pdf

Founded in 1828 as a planned city by the Georgia Legislature, Columbus prospered due to its location on the Chattahoochee River. Industry sprang up along the shores of the Chattahoochee and shaped Columbus's identity as one of Georgia's premier cities. Today a thriving metropolis, it is the Columbus of yesteryear that is illuminated within these pages. Early postcard views reflect the city from around 1905 to 1942, showcasing many of its businesses, neighborhoods, and parks. Included are places virtually unknown to citizens today--the Bell Tower, the City Market, North Highlands Park, and Wildwood Park--as well as those that were landmarks a century ago and landmarks still: the Iron Bank, the Springer Opera House, the Union Depot, the YMCA, and Fort Benning.

The Peabody Hotel by Scott Faragher,Katherine Harrington Pdf

The South's finest and one of America's best-these words have always defined the world-famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. The Peabody emerged from the war-torn, post-Civil War South in 1869 to become one of the finest hotels in America. Its reputation for comfort, service, and fine dining grew along with Memphis's stature as "the river city, cotton capital, and birthplace of the blues." The most famous and infamous citizens of the era stayed at the original Peabody in its day. There, plantations were won or lost on a roll of the dice. After more than 50 years, the original hotel was replaced by a new 12-story, 615-room hotel in 1925. It was then that the hotel's name became synonymous with elegance. It also became the social center of Memphis and the mid-South, and a haunt for the rich and famous. The celebrated ducks swimming in the marble lobby fountain, parties in the skyway, or dancing on the open plantation roof to the music of the most renowned bands and orchestras of the day have all been part of this fabulous hotel's history. Today, the fully restored Peabody retains its reputation for legendary Southern hospitality and tasteful elegance. The hotel continues to serve as an anchor for the restoration and revitalization of the downtown area of one of America's most important cities.

Southampton Cottages of South Main Street, The by Sally Spanburgh Pdf

"In 1887, Southampton was proclaimed 'the most charming of all small cities by the sea.' From 1870 to 1930, the colonial farmsteads that dotted its oldest street made way for the stately second homes of America's most fashionable elite. Hollywood royalty like Ginger Rogers and Jimmy Stewart lived and played in these magnificent second homes. Situated on the east side of Lake Agawam, South Main Street cottagers fished, bicycled, sailed and walked to the beach and into the village throughout the summer season. Today all but five of these grand landmarks survive. Local author Sally Spanburgh uses her historical and architectural expertise to tell the stories behind the construction of these beautiful homes and their remarkable owners"--Publisher description.

Postcards from Exeter by Carol Walker Aten Pdf

In 1904, Frank W. Swallow left behind his short-lived car dealership and began a successful cottage industry, printing his own hand-colored postcards. He was "the First to Introduce the Souvenir Post Card to One-Half of New England," according to the imprint of his trademark swallow. Many of Swallow's photographs are contained within this book, which tells a special history of Exeter, New Hampshire, between 1900 and 1940-a time when the horse and carriage era shifted to the automobile, hemlines rose a few inches, and electricity came to town. Learn about a mysteriously lost statue, hidden waterways, great buildings that burned, forgotten parades, and the famous "Swallow Girls." Most images, never before seen, are from the Exeter Historical Society's collection, and proceeds from the sales of this publication support the society in honor of its seventy-fifth anniversary.

James Purdy by ASSISTANT TEACHING PROFESSOR MICHAEL. SNYDER Pdf

A definitive biography of a twentieth century gay author whose work has recently been rediscovered and enjoys a cult following. One of the most iconoclastic twentieth-century American novelists, James Purdy penned original and sometimes shocking works about those on the margins of American society, exploring small towns, urban life, failure, alienation, sexuality, and familial relations. In his own life, Purdy was a compelling if eccentric figure, declared an authentic American genius by Gore Vidal. James Purdy: Life of a Contrarian Writer is the first full-length biography of the gay American novelist, story writer, playwright, and poet. Michael Snyder has spent over a decade plumbing the mysteries of Purdy's career and personal life, including interviews with those who knew him. From his roots in northwestern Ohio, Purdy moved to the world of Bohemian artists and jazz musicians in Chicago in the late 1930s and 1940s, travelled in Spain, studied in Mexico, enlisted in the Army Air Corps, worked for the National Security Agency, and taught in Cuba and at a Wisconsin college for nearly a decade. All the while, he aspired to become a writer, but struggled to publish. Only when friends financed the private printing of his work did he find a champion in poet Dame Edith Sitwell, who helped get him published in England, which led to publication in the United States. After moving to New York in 1957, he spent nearly fifty years writing in Brooklyn Heights. Although Purdy's critical reputation peaked in the 1960s and he never enjoyed a bestseller, his often queer and edgy content found a diverse following that included Tennessee Williams, Langston Hughes, William Carlos Williams, Dorothy Parker, Edward Albee, Jonathan Franzen, John Waters, and many LGBTQ readers. Difficult and often contrarian, Purdy sometimes hampered his own career as he sought recognition from a conservative, cliquey New York publishing world. Conveying the potency and influence of Purdy's fierce artistic integrity, vision, and self-definition as a truth-teller, this groundbreaking literary biography recovers the life of a highly talented writer with a persistent cult following.
