Prescription of Narcotics for Heroin Addicts by Ambros Uchtenhagen Pdf

This is the first volume of the long-awaited research report on a much discussed study on the prescription of heroin and other narcotics to chronic heroin addicts in Switzerland. Data were collected over a period of 3 years on a cohort of 1,035 chronic heroin addicts who had failed in drug-free or methadone substitution treatments and who were prescribed heroin, morphine or methadone within the framework of a comprehensive care program. According to the findings of the study, heroin maintenance is considered to have a positive effect on both patients and their social environment due to an improvement in health and social status of the patients as well as a significant decrease in drug-related delinquency. This report provides a unique source of information on pharmacological, medical and psychosocial aspects of heroin maintenance. It is indispensable reading for psychiatrists, doctors, and social workers working with drug addicts as well as for pharmacologists, social scientists, criminologists and public health officials concerned with the treatment and management of drug addiction.

Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Health and Medicine Division,Board on Health Sciences Policy,Committee on Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder Pdf

The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.

Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Health and Medicine Division,Board on Health Sciences Policy,Committee on Pain Management and Regulatory Strategies to Address Prescription Opioid Abuse Pdf

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment by Committee on Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment,Institute of Medicine Pdf

For nearly three decades, methadone hydrochloride has been the primary means of treating opiate addiction. Today, about 115,000 people receive such treatment, and thousands more have benefited from it in the past. Even though methadone's effectiveness has been well established, its use remains controversial, a fact reflected by the extensive regulation of its manufacturing, labeling, distribution, and use. The Food and Drug Administration regulates the safety and effectiveness of methadone, as it does for all drugs, and the Drug Enforcement Administration regulates it as a controlled substance. However, methadone is also subjected to a unique additional tier of regulation that prescribes how and under what circumstances it may be used to treat opiate addiction. Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment examines current Department of Health and Human Services standards for narcotic addiction treatment and the regulation of methadone treatment programs pursuant to those standards. The book includes an evaluation of the effect of federal regulations on the provision of methadone treatment services and an exploration of options for modifying the regulations to allow optimal clinical practice. The volume also includes an assessment of alternatives to the existing regulations.

Cost Benefit Analysis of Heroin Maintenance Treatment by Felix Gutzwiller,Dr. Thomas Steffen Pdf

The book series 'Medical Prescription of Narcotics' gives an account of the research reports of a Swiss study on prescription of narcotics to chronic heroin addicts. In this second volume the results are examined from an economical standpoint. The four main aspects analyzed are housing, work, legal behavior and health. The benefits are rated according to the changes in the quantified effects for the participants followed for one year after entry to the trial. The assessment of the partial benefits is expressed per participant and per day and subsequently added to find the overall benefit. These results are compared with the costs of labor, narcotics, medical needs, and further operating costs of the project. The book is a stimulating contribution to the discussion on heroin maintenance, and provides essential arguments for decision makers in public health, politicians, administrators, physicians, therapists and social workers dealing with drug addicts.

New Heroin-assisted Treatment by John Strang,Teodora Groshkova,Nicola Metrebian,European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction Pdf

This publication brought together all the major contemporary studies on the topic of treating heroin dependence to address two key questions : does the evidence available now support the use of supervised injectable heroin treatment for those who have failed to respond adequately to other approaches? and if so, what are the clinical management issues necessary to ensure that this therapeutic option can be delivered in a manner that avoids the obvious risks associated with such an intervention?

More Harm Than Good by Susan C. Boyd,Connie I. Carter,Donald MacPherson Pdf

In More Harm Than Good, Carter, Boyd and MacPherson take a critical look at the current state of Canadian drug policy and raise key questions about the effects of Canada’s increasing involvement in and commitment to the “war on drugs.” A primer on Canadian drug policy, the analysis in More Harm Than Good is shaped by critical sociology and feminist perspectives on drugs and incorporates insights not only from individuals who are on the front lines of drug policy in Canada — treatment and service workers — but also from those who live with the consequences of that policy on a daily basis — people who use criminalized drugs. Finally, the authors propose realistic alternatives to today’s failed policy approach. “Your book really expanded thinking and understanding and had a big influence on students critical and reflective thought. Readings sparked rich conversations about their own hopes and wishes for the field, broader social and political responses and the impact on youth and families affected by substances.” - Stephanie McCune, University of Victoria Please note: an error occurred with the printing of this book, and one of the sidebars was not printed.
