Post-harvest losses: Global scale, solutions, and relevance to Ghana by Ridolfi, Carlotta,Hoffman, Vivian,Baral, Siddhartha Pdf

This report collates and contextualizes available evidence on post-harvest losses (PHL) in horticultural crops in Kenya. We begin by outlining the extent of PHL in horticultural crops and its repercussions in the context of food security and poverty reduction. We then describe the growing importance of the horticulture sector in Kenya and its growth potential, especially in terms of exports. Following this discussion, we detail PHL for two important horticultural crops, mangoes and tomatoes, for which Kenya-specific evidence is available. We discuss ways to mitigate PHL from three angles: technological, economic or behavioral, and institutional. Documenting cost-effective technological interventions to mitigate PHL, we catalogue ways to tackle PHL at the individual farmer level. We then highlight behavioral bottlenecks to adoption of such technologies and the need to design interventions in ways that address these. Finally, we discuss structural and institutional changes that would need to accompany individual-level interventions to bring about significant reductions in PHL.

Food loss prevention and reduction analysis in Indonesia by Eriyatno, E.,Larasati, L.,Herianto, A.,Fatmaningrum, D.,Bucatariu, C.,Galvez-Nogales, E. Pdf

Food loss and waste within Indonesia's supply chains present significant challenges to both environmental sustainability and efficient natural resource utilization. [Author] This pervasive issue spans from food production to retail, affecting the ability of supply chain stakeholders to invest in essential infrastructure improvements. [Author] Food waste, in particular, accumulates at various stages, including retail, catering services, and households, further straining natural resources and exacerbating climate change impacts. [Author] In Indonesia, the reduction and prevention of food losses assume strategic importance as it directly impacts food availability, accessibility, and the well-being of consumers. [Author] Additionally, it alleviates pressure on natural resources, supports the growth of agribusiness, and enhances the livelihoods of farmers and other actors along the supply chains. [Author] Key factors closely linked to addressing food losses in Indonesia include finance, technology, knowledge, and market dynamics. [Author] Alarmingly, horticultural commodities, especially vegetables, experience losses exceeding 60 percent. [Author] Minimizing food losses not only bolsters productivity for agripreneurs but also improves food security and nutrition for all, from vulnerable smallholder farmers to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). [Author] To address these challenges, Indonesia has enacted national law No. [Author] 13/2020 on horticulture, encompassing fruits and vegetables, with the aim of creating jobs, enhancing production, productivity, quality, added value, competitive advantage, and market share. [Author] In a recent study conducted between June and December 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Center of System, a logistics research institution, analysed food losses in chili, cabbage and shallot supply chains. [Author] These commodities, predominantly cultivated by smallholder farmers, play a vital role in stabilizing food prices, controlling regional inflation, and ensuring food availability and accessibility. [Author] The study not only identifies the extent of quality and quantity losses but also provides practical solutions for their reduction. [Author] Crucially, enhancing the implementation of hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP), good manufacturing practices (GMP), and good hygiene practices (GHP) is emphasized, particularly during harvest, transportation, handling and storage. [Author] Recommendations include establishing post-harvest technical assistance facilities, agrologistic centres, and value-added processing facilities to mitigate losses due to quality degradation. [Author] Furthermore, the abstract underscores the need for innovation in technology, private-sector investment, and raising public awareness as decisive elements in substantially reducing food loss. [Author] In conclusion, addressing food loss is paramount for enhancing food security, supporting sustainable livelihoods, and fortifying the overall food system in Indonesia. [Author]

Tackling post harvest loss in Ghana: Cost-effectiveness of technologies by Baral, Siddhartha,Hoffmann, Vivian Pdf

Postharvest Loss (PHL) refers to measurable quality and quantity loss of food in the postharvest system. The postharvest system consists of inter-connected stages, from the act of harvest, to crop processing, storage, marketing and transportation, to the stage of consumption. PHL can occur at any stage in the postharvest chain. This note describes common types of PHL, approaches to mitigation, and the cost-effectiveness of technologies to achieve this. We begin with a section on common causes of loss, best practices for preventing these, and barriers to adoption of these practices. We then discuss prevention of loss during storage, for which several technological solutions have been developed and evaluated. Finally, we summarize the evidence on the cost-effectiveness of three such technologies that have been scientifically evaluated: hermetic storage bags, metal silos, and a cooling chamber

The Role of Post-harvest Management in Assuring the Quality and Safety of Horticultural Produce by Adel A. Kader,Rosa Sonya Rolle,Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

Basic approaches to maintaining the safety and quality of horticultural produce are the same, regardless of the market to which this produce is targeted. This bulletin reviews the factors which contribute to quality and safety deterioration of horticultural produce, and describes approaches to assuring the maintenance of quality and safety throughout the post-harvest chain. Specific examples are given to illustrate the economic implications of investing in and applying proper post-harvest technologies. Criteria for the assessment of post-harvest needs, the selection of post-harvest technologies appropriate to the situation and context, and for extending appropriate levels of post-harvest information are also discussed.
