Roadblocks to Freedom by Andrew Fede Pdf

This new book by Andrew Fede considers the law of freedom suits and manumission from the point-of-view of legal procedure, evidence rules, damage awards, and trial practicein addition to the abstract principles stated in the appellate decisions. The author shows that procedural and evidentiary roadblocks made it increasingly impossible for many slaves, or free blacks who were wrongfully held as slaves, to litigate their freedom. Even some of the most celebrated cases in which the courts freed slaves must be read as tempered by the legal realities the actors faced or the courts actually recognized in the process. Slave owners in almost all slave societies had the right to manumit or free all or some of their slaves. Slavery law also permitted people to win their freedom if they were held as slaves contrary to law. In this book, Fede provides a comprehensive view of how some enslaved litigants won their freedom in the courtand how many others, like Dred and Harriet Scott, did not because of the substantive and procedural barriers that both judges and legislators placed in the way of people held in slavery who sought their freedom in court. From the 17th century to the Civil War, Southern governments built roadblock after roadblock to the freedom sought by deserving enslaved people, even if this restricted the masters' rights to free their slaves or defied settled law. They increasingly prohibited all manumissions and added layers of procedure to those seeking freedomwhile eventually providing a streamlined process by which free blacks "voluntarily" enslaved themselves and their children. Drawing on his three decades of legal experience to take seriously the trial process and rules under which slave freedom cases were decided, Fede considers how slave owners, slaves, and lawyers caused legal change from the bottom up.

In the Shadow of Dred Scott by Kelly Marie Kennington Pdf

The Dred Scott suit for freedom, argues Kelly M. Kennington, was merely the most famous example of a phenomenon that was more widespread in antebellum American jurisprudence than is generally recognized. The author draws on the case files of more than three hundred enslaved individuals who, like Dred Scott and his family, sued for freedom in the local legal arena of St. Louis. Her findings open new perspectives on the legal culture of slavery and the negotiated processes involved in freedom suits. As a gateway to the American West, a major port on both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, and a focal point in the rancorous national debate over slavery's expansion, St. Louis was an ideal place for enslaved individuals to challenge the legal systems and, by extension, the social systems that held them in forced servitude. Kennington offers an in-depth look at how daily interactions, webs of relationships, and arguments presented in court shaped and reshaped legal debates and public at-titudes over slavery and freedom in St. Louis. Kennington also surveys more than eight hundred state supreme court freedom suits from around the United States to situate the St. Louis example in a broader context. Although white enslavers dominated the antebellum legal system in St. Louis and throughout the slaveholding states, that fact did not mean that the system ignored the concerns of the subordinated groups who made up the bulk of the American population. By looking at a particular example of one group's encounters with the law--and placing these suits into conversation with similar en-counters that arose in appellate cases nationwide--Kennington sheds light on the ways in which the law responded to the demands of a variety of actors.

5 Easy Steps to Financial Freedom by Duane Harden,Ted Ruybal Pdf

Book Praise & Reviews "As a how-to guide, this book contains everything you may need to know to turn your passions into profits." Bill Bartmann (Billionaire entrepreneur, author, speaker, educator) Read & Give Program A portion of the sale of this book is donated to charity. Book Description Are you unhappy in your job? Are you tired of living paycheck to paycheck and feel like you just don't have enough money, skills, or education to turn your life around? Even if you're not sure you know what it is you like to do, you can change your life and get rich doing it, says entrepreneur Duane Harden in his wise and entertaining new book, 5 Easy Steps to Financial Freedom: Do What You Love & Get Rich Doing It. Turning your passion into a profitable business is easy, fast, and fun, says Harden, and you can become rich in just five easy steps. First, start by saying yes to financial freedom. Attitude is everything and as the Law of Attraction states, what you put out into the universe is often what you attract. If you imagine yourself financially secure and happy, you will be. Imagining a new life for yourself is the inspiration you need to go out and do the concrete things to turn your dreams into a reality. Conversationally written and filled with humorous drawings, helpful worksheets, and key tips, 5 Easy Steps to Financial Freedom also offers a 90-day action plan that includes blueprints for success that Harden himself used to build his wealth. His own journey included the purchase of numerous real-estate properties, opening a restaurant, starting a music company, and much more. Harden gives you "Life Assignments" that get you thinking and acting differently. Beware of what he calls the "crabs in a pot" mentality, where everyone is trying to pull everyone else down in order to struggle to the top. Instead, he advises, think positively. Stay away from the naysayers and feed your dream. Soon you will realize that your inner life is reflected in your outer life. Harden helps you to discover the real you, what you want, and how much money you want to be there for you now and in the future. He explains how the real difference between rich people and poor people is fear and an unwillingness to keep an open mind to new opportunities. Rich people are not afraid to take risks, and well-planned risks almost always pay off. Success, he reminds you, is your birthright and it's your job to claim it. Review your credit and your financial house. Clean up the clutter in your life, whether it is the wrong way of thinking or a messy desk. Discover what really makes you tick because when you love what you do it's never really work, and when passion is present the money will miraculously follow. Keep daily positive reminders taped where you can see them, or even have a vision board filled with photographs of where you want to be in life. Write your resignation letter to your boss, but don't send it yet. Just the act of writing it puts you in the right frame of mind for moving on to something much better. "You are what you think and will become what you dream," says Harden. You'll learn to be a PIG (passive income generator) Farmer, which requires little work but makes you tons of money. 5 Easy Steps to Financial Freedom shows you how go from rags to riches and is understandable and easy to read. This invaluable guide will change your life!

Freedom Next Time by John Pilger Pdf

John Pilger is one of the world's pre-eminent investigative journalists and documentary film-makers. His best-selling books of reportage, which include Heroes and Hidden Voices, have in the words of Noam Chomsky 'been a beacon of light in often dark times'. In Freedom Next Time he looks at five countries, in each of which a long struggle for freedom has taken place; in each the people, having shed blood and dreams, are still waiting. In Afghanistan, Iraq and South Africa there has been the promise of hope, and even an 'official' freedom, but the reality of these divided societies is that they are still waiting for real freedom. In Palestine, the cycle of violence continues with no resolution in sight. And the island of Diego Garcia, in the Indian Ocean, is a microcosm of the ruthlessness of great powers. The island was sold by the British to the American military in the 1960s. The indigenous population, descended from slaves, were forcibly removed to the slums of Port Louis in Mauritius. They have continued to fight for the return of their homeland ever since - three years ago the High Court granted them the right of return, but this has subsequently been blocked. The island remains the US's third biggest military base; a base from which they are able to launch attacks against the Middle East. Once again John Pilger gives a voice to the people living through these momentous times and, in gripping detail, shows us the lives behind the headlines.
