This manual, intended to serve independent schools, is an update on an earlier evaluation of school heads and trustees. Section 1, "Evaluation and Why It Matters," emphasizes the relationship between performance evaluation and school purposes. "Examples of Evaluation of Performance," section 2, illustrates planned evaluation of six schools. Other considerations are staff opinions and procedures for terminating the head's appointment. "Special Situations, Problems, and Opportunities," section 6, enumerates evaluation circumstances that require emphasis. Situations include the strong, reluctant head or board; the head as the school's most stable, senior person; a board dominating ingroup; and school problems.
