The Byzantine Achievement: an Historical Perspective CE 330 - 1453 by Robert Byron Pdf

"Of that Byzantine Empire the universal verdict of history is that it constitutes, without a single exception, the most thoroughly base and despicable form that civilization has yet assumed...There has been no other enduring civilization so absolutely destitute of all the forms and elements of greatness, and none to which the epithet mean may be so emphatically applied...Its vices were the vices of men who had ceased to be brave without learning to be virtuous. Without patriotism, without the fruition or desire of liberty...slaves, and willing slaves, in both their actions and in their thoughts, immersed in sensuality and in the most frivolous pleasures, the people only emerged from their listlessness when some theological subtlety, or some chivalry in the chariot races, stimulated them to frantic riots...They had continually before them the literature of ancient Greece, instinct with the loftiest heroism: but that literature, which afterwards did so much to revivify Europe, could fire the degenerate Greeks with no spark or semblance of nobility. The history of the empire is a monotonous story of the intrigues of priests, eunuchs, and women; of poisonings, of conspiracies, of uniform ingratitude, of perpetual fratricides."

The Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire by J. M. Hussey Pdf

This book describes the role of the medieval Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire (c.600-c.1453). As an integral part of its policy it was (as in western Christianity) closely linked with many aspects of everyday life both official and otherwise. It was a formative period for Orthodoxy. It had to face doctrinal problems and heresies; at the same time it experienced the continuity and deepening of its liturgical life. While holding fast to the traditions ofthe fathers and the councils, it saw certain developments in doctrine and liturgy as also in administration.Part I discusses the landmarks in ecclesiastical affairs within the Empire as well as the creative influence exercised on the Slavs and the increasing contacts with westerners particularly after 1204. Part II gives a brief account of the structure of the medieval Orthodox Church, its officials and organization, and the spirituality of laity, monks, and clergy.

Byzantinum in the Year 1000 by Paul Magdalino Pdf

One thousand years ago, the Byzantine Empire was reaching the height of its revival as a medieval state. The ten contributions to this volume by scholars from six European countries re-assess key aspects of the empire's politics and culture in the long reign of the emperor Basil II, whose name has come to symbolise the greatness of Byzantium in the age before the crusades. The first five chapters deal with international diplomacy, the emperor's power, and government in Asia Minor and the frontier provinces of the Balkans and southern Italy. The second half of the volume covers aspects of law, history-writing, poetry and hagiography, and concludes with a discussion of Byzantine attitudes to the Millennium.

In Laudem Iustini Augusti Minoris by Flavius Cresconius Corippus Pdf

The few scraps of information which we have about Flavius Cresconius Corippus come almost exclusively from his two poems, the lohannis and the In laudem lustini Augusti minoris. Despite this he was still the last important Latin author of Late Antiquity. Corippus's poem on the accession of Justin II is considered a most unusual work. Unlike the lohannis, so far as we know the only other product by the same author, it tells of no epic battles against barbarian peoples. Instead we have a narrative poem, covering in great detail the accession of an emperor, the first week of his reign and (in part, for the poem breaks off before the end) his inauguration as consul. This is the first book to utilize or interpret this immensely valuable body of evidence as a whole. Cameron has contributed to one of the most urgent tasks of modern scholars of late antiquity and (still more) of the Byzantine period-the provision of a readable text with translation and commentary of this important work which until now was only available in plain and inadequate editions.
