The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint) by Catholic University Of America Pdf

Excerpt from The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 3 The Sisters College is a response to two of the mo st obvious needs of Catholic education in the United States, viz., the teacher's need of adequate training and the need of system and organization in our Catholic schools. The many grave problems which the deep seated social and economic changes of the past few de cades have presented to the schools for solution, demand the highest attainable training in the teachers engaged in all grades of school work. The state school systems have provided for this training by the creation of city training schools, state normal schools, and the depart ments of education in the various state universities. Our teaching communities have endeavored, according to the measure of their means, to provide normal training for their members, but it has often been felt that this train ing was insufficient and recourse was had in some in stances to the state normal schools and state universities to complete the academic and professional training of at least a few of the Sisters. This, on the face of it, is a strange anomaly. The aim of education in our state schools is to present to the pupils a world from which God is banished and to organize in their minds 9. System of truth that has no need of Revelation, of divine eu thority back of moral law, or of redeeming grace. How, then, may a Sister be expected to find in such an institu tion adequate training for the solution of the problems of Catholic education which are precisely to show God back of all natural phenomena and to read His will in the law engraven on the human heart and proclaimed through divinely constituted channels of autho rity? Moreover. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 16 by Catholic University Of America Pdf

Excerpt from The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 16: July-December, 1918 We must not forget that scholars have, as technical aids to study, divided our language and literature into three great epochs: Old English, extending from the earliest times to the year 1100; Middle English, 1100 to 1500; and Modern, 1500 to the present. These periods are still so long, that each may again be divided; this is true especially of Middle English, when our speech was undergoing very considerable changes. Accordingly, Sir Fred erick Madden, whose authority is generally accepted, makes a subdivision of the latter and calls the period from 1100 to 1230 semi-saxon. It is to this class that the piece of literature we are now going to study belongs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 12 by Catholic University Of America Pdf

Excerpt from The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 12: June-December, 1916 It is the singular advantage Of our Catholic schools that they are conducted by women who devote themselves with out reserve to their task, whose hearts and minds and lives are wholly given to developing, in knowledge and in virtue, the souls of our children. And for this very reason it is essential to the success Of Catholic education that our Sisters should be prepared, not only as teachers, but also as Catholic teachers. They need all the instruc tion that university courses can supply, but they must receive that instruction from a Catholic source. Here at the University, while they are trained in the science and art of education, they are also imbued with the true spirit Of the teacher, the spirit of Christ himself. They are taught to see and to appreciate all knowledge in the light of God's eternal truth, to understand the facts of nature, the events Of history, the vicissitudes of civiliza tion and the institutions established by man, as so many items in the order which is ruled by Divine Providence. And thus seeing God in all things, they are able to keep God ever before the minds of their pupils. They are prepared to make religion not merely a part Of their teaching, but the very life and soul of all that they teach. They are trained to unify their teaching, and, what is more important, to make God the source and center of that unification. The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 6 (Classic Reprint) by Catholic University Of America Pdf

Excerpt from The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 6 Under the little ray of sunshine which Governor Bourke 's Act brought to Catholics, Bishop Polding, who arrived in 1836, was enabled to establish about 17 schools, some of them fairly large. Two years later the Irish Sisters of Charity came to the settlement, the first of the many bands of devoted teachers whom the Green Isle has sent to the sunny South. The agitation for the Irish National system was continued under the leadership of Robert Lowe, who later became the English politician, Lord Sherbrooke. Their efforts met with success in 1848, when a National Board was formed to govern 50 schools and a Denominational Board to manage 37 schools, most of which were Catholic. Catholics were not enamoured with this system, which was unfairly administered, but in spite Of obstacles their schools increased. The admirers of secularism attempted repeatedly to Obtain its repeal, which they succeeded in doing in 1866, when the State contained 385 National schools having scholars, and 445 Denominational schools with on the rolls. The Catholic Educational Review by Catholic University Of America Pdf

Excerpt from The Catholic Educational Review: January, 1911 Of religion. They were in the possession Of the Church from the earliest days, and their application antedates by centuries the formulation Of theories that are now widely accepted as the psychological basis Of education. It is indeed interesting to note that as a clearer insight is Obtained into the activity and development Of the mind, the principles which the Papacy has followed in its teach ing are seen to be the best sort Of applied psychology. On the other hand, the rejection Of these principles by many who nevertheless desire that Christianity should prevail, explains in some measure the difficulties pre sented by the question of religious and moral instruc tion. At all events, it has been claimed that the teaching Of religion must be kept apart from the teaching Of other subjects on the ground that its methods are incompatible with those that are employed in the regular work Of the school; and it is worth while inquiring whether the Church in her long experience has not made use of meth ods that are free from any such Objection. The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 7 (Classic Reprint) by Catholic University Of America Pdf

Excerpt from The Catholic Educational Review, Vol. 7 We find, e. G., in one part of the Catechism, in the seventh article, the last judgment, and in another the seven corporal works of mercy. But how many pupils are aware that the practice or neglect of these works will decide our place at the last judgment? The theological virtues of faith, hope and charity are treated separately in different parts of the Catechism; they are also enumerated as virtues, but how many chil dren are made aware of the fact that they are infused in holy Baptism? Again, the Sins against these virtues are usually mentioned in connection with the first command ment, but few children are made aware of the fact that all mortal sins destroy charity, all mortal sins against hope destroy both hope and charity, and that every mortal sin against faith destroys the whole spiritual life. If the knowledge of these truths were put more clearly and elaborated more thoroughly, our people would better realize the importance of the practice of religion, whereas superficial knowledge and mere cramming of the memory will be of little practical use. Here the formal steps serve as a useful warning and reminder. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Flannery O'Connor by R. Neil Scott,Irwin H. Streight Pdf

Despite Flannery O'Connor's brief life, her work, comprising novels, short stories, essays, and articles, has had a great impact on American literature and to some extent popular culture, of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Her writing has become well loved, well read, and often studied. This book reprints complete book reviews and excerpts from review essays on the works of Flannery O'Connor that appeared in newspapers and periodicals during the author's writing life (1945-64) and after her early death. The more than four hundred edited reviews are prefaced with a substantial Introduction that situates O'Connor within the critical milieu of post-war American letters and Southern literary tradition, and provides an overview of contemporary critical responses to her collected stories, novels, and occasional pieces. An important resource for scholars of O'Connor and of Southern literature generally, this volume reveals much about her early reception and the continuing relevance of her work.
