From Blood Diamonds to the Kimberley Process by Dr Franziska Bieri Pdf

In the late 1990s, several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused world attention on the issue of conflict diamonds which funded wars, massive death, and refugee crises across Central and West Africa. Several governments, NGOs, and key industry players engaged in negotiations under the so-called Kimberley Process (KP). A voluntary global agreement came into effect leading to a substantial decline in illicit diamond trade. Despite its importance in international affairs, the KP remains understudied in academia. Franziska Bieri's book provides the first comprehensive account of the KP and is the first to reveal how NGOs have become critical actors in their own right, possessing the ability to directly influence policies and to participate in the decision making and the implementation of global agreements. In developing this argument, Bieri explains: why the NGO campaign to raise awareness was successful; why a rapid and comprehensive resolution on such a complex global problem was possible; how the tripartite negotiations between states, NGOs, and industry developed during the implementation of the agreement, which is an on-going process. Based on extensive personal interviews with prominent campaigners, leading bureaucrats, and industry officials, hundreds of KP publications, official UN documents, industry news, and NGO reports, this timely book allows for a much needed engagement in contemporary debates about the campaign against conflict diamonds, the Kimberley Process, and the themes defining today's global governance arena.

Does any of this describe you? You don't feel good or aren't well and your doctor has been unable to help you feel better? You take pills that are supposed to keep you alive but the side effects make you feel terrible? You wake up tired even after eight hours of sleep. You are overwhelmed trying to fit so much into your life that the thought of taking on one more task sends you into a downward spiral of stress. You're short tempered and impatient with so many people and activities during your day. You've forgotten how to laugh, joke or kid around with your friends and family. You crave sweet or salty foods. You feel you can't afford to take a day off, that all your activities and the people around you are more important than you are. You've gained a lot (or lost a lot) of weight because you were eating without paying attention to what you were eating OR you forgot to eat. You seem to suffer from colds and the sniffles way too often or have a lot of body pain such as lower back or joint pain. It's chronic and the doctor can't seem to find any physical cause. You don't recover easily. You have a major illness or high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other "middle age" conditions. You suffer a lot of headaches. Things that didn't used to bother you drive you crazy now. You are sensitive to sounds, especially if there are two or three of them, like the radio, conversation and background sounds. You can't figure out why you've hit a roadblock in your life. After all, you're working hard to get ahead. Your current behavior is causing your relationships to deteriorate. You might even be considering dangerous activities such as illegal drugs, risky behavior, or affairs just to feel alive again. In The Diamond Healing Method, you'll not only see the causes for your symptoms, you will also see the solutions. You'll find there are seven life strategies that are more important than what you eat for you to live vibrantly and abundantly. These solutions have brought about massive changes in the hundreds of clients I have worked with. Which factors affect your health most profoundly? Within the pages of this book, you'll find that there are seven major factors that affect your life, health, mental, emotional, and spiritual well being. It isn't just your mind-set; it is also your environment and your interaction with it, whether it's other people, your surroundings or what you put in your body. It's also about how you treat yourself and what you tell yourself every day. When you look at it this way, it's really all about energy management, which is what this book describes. Small adjustments in your day, your interactions with your environment, others, or yourself can add up to big positive effects on your internal stress levels. Here, you'll discover small simple adjustment techniques that add up to major improvements in your life.

Diamonds the size of footballs, the size of watermelons - billions of tons of diamonds wait for eternity a hundred miles beyond our reach. Spanning centuries of ground-breaking science, bitter rivalry, outright fraud, and self-delusion, The Diamond Makers is a compelling narrative centered around the brilliant, often eccentric, and controversial pioneers of high pressure research. This vivid blend of dramatic personal stories and extraordinary scientific advances - and devastating failures - brings alive the quest to create diamond. Scientists have harnessed crushing pressures and scorching temperatures to transform almost any carbon-rich material, from road tar to peanut butter, into the most prized of gems. CVD Diamond for Electronic Devices and Sensors by Ricardo S. Sussmann Pdf

Synthetic diamond is diamond produced by using chemical or physical processes. Like naturally occurring diamond it is composed of a three-dimensional carbon crystal. Due to its extreme physical properties, synthetic diamond is used in many industrial applications, such as drill bits and scratch-proof coatings, and has the potential to be used in many new application areas A brand new title from the respected Wiley Materials for Electronic and Optoelectronic Applications series, this title is the most up-to-date resource for diamond specialists. Beginning with an introduction to the properties of diamond, defects, impurities and the growth of CVD diamond with its imminent commercial impact, the remainder of the book comprises six sections: introduction, radiation sensors, active electronic devices, biosensors, MEMs and electrochemistry. Subsequent chapters cover the diverse areas in which diamond applications are having an impact including electronics, sensors and actuators and medicine.

This is the first book devoted entirely to diamond inclusions in all its known natural characteristics. The first half of the book defines external and internal inclusions, describing each variety with numerous full color examples. What makes this work outstanding is the section in which inclusions are tracked from the rough to the cut and how the integrity of the diamond can be compromised by depth and position of the remaining inclusions. Additionally, an entire section is devoted to the diamond manufacturing process and its relationship to inclusions. In this area inclusions are examined with regards to heat, pressure, rotation, and other mechanical influences. Inclusions trapped in diamonds are full of information that in many cases is still to be scientifically interpreted. This book take us into the fascinating would of micro-inclusions giving us fresh insight in one of natureżs most sought after gems.
