The Emancipation of Massachusetts (Classic Reprint) by Brooks Adams Pdf

Excerpt from The Emancipation of Massachusetts I wrote this little volume more than thirty years ago, since when I have hardly opened it. Therefore I now read it almost as if it were written by another man, and I find to my relief that, on the whole, I think rather better of it than I did when I published it. Indeed, as a criticism of what were then the accepted views of Massachusetts history, as expounded by her most authoritative historians, I see nothing in it to retract or even to modify, I do, however, somewhat regret the rather acrimonious tone which I occasionally adopted when speaking of the more conservative section of the clergy. Not that I think that the Mathers, for example, and their like, did not deserve all, or, indeed, more than all I ever said or thought of them, but because I conceive that equally effective strictures might have been conveyed in urbaner language; and, as I age, I shrink from anything akin to invective, even in what amounts to controversy. Therefore I have now nothing to alter in the Emancipation of Massachusetts, viewed as history, though I might soften its asperities somewhat, here and there; but when I come to consider it as philosophy, I am startled to observe the gap which separates the present epoch from my early middle life. The Emancipation of the Negroes in the British West Indies by Ralph Waldo Emerson Pdf

Excerpt from The Emancipation of the Negroes in the British West Indies: An Address Delivered at Concord, Massachusetts, on 1st August, 1844 Friends and Fellow-Citizens, We are met to exchange congratulations on the anniversary of an event singular in the history of civilization; a day of reason; of the clear light; of that which makes us better than a flock of birds and beasts: a day which gave the immense fortification of a fact, - of gross history, - to ethical abstractions. It was the settlement, as far as a great empire was concerned, of a question on which almost every leading citizen in it had taken care to record his vole; one which for many years absorbed the attention of the best and most eminent of mankind. I might well hesitate, coming from other studies, and without the smallest claim to be a special labourer in this work of humanity, to undertake to set this matter before you; which ought rather to be done by a strict co-operation of many well-advised persons; but I shall not apologize for my weakness. In this cause, no man's weakness is any prejudice; it has a thousand sons; if one man cannot speak, ten others can; and whether by the wisdom of its friends, or by the folly of its adversaries; by speech and by silence; by doing and by omitting to do, it goes forward. Therefore I will speak, - or, not I, but the might of liberty in my weakness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Massachusetts in the American Revolution (Classic Reprint) by Ainsworth Rand Spofford Pdf

Excerpt from Massachusetts in the American Revolution While the outbreak and progress of the revolution incontestably led to a great ex pansion of the human mind, that movement was felt rather in the field and the council, than in the closet or the schools. The war against England, which requiredfor its successful prosecution great powers and distinguished talents, happily appeared to create and to foster both. Whenever the occasion arose, there were always found men worthy of the occasion. Those who had manifested no special commanding faculties in the piping times of peace, were found, under the rousing stimulus of war.
