The Evolution of the Bioenergetic Processes by E. Broda Pdf

The Evolution of the Bioenergetic Processes deals with the evolution of the bioenergetic processes, from fermentation to photosynthesis and respiration, and their interrelationships in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Topics covered range from the origin of life to the evolution of eobionts, organisms, and energy-rich compounds. Fermentation, photoorganotrophy, and photosynthesis in bacteria and plants are also discussed. Comprised of 25 chapters, this book begins with an overview of energy and entropy in the biosphere, followed by a detailed treatment of the evolution of bioenergetics based on the pattern of the bioenergetic processes in extant organisms. The reader is then introduced to the events involved in the origin of life; the evolution of eobionts and organisms; and the origin of energy-rich compounds, particularly nucleotides of the adenylic acid system. Subsequent chapters focus on fermentation and photosynthesis; assimilation of carbon dioxide; photoorganotrophy, chemolithotrophy, and photolithotrophy; and aerobic and anaerobic respiration of prokaryotes. The book also considers the energy supply of protozoa and fungi before concluding with an analysis of the history of atmospheric oxygen. This monograph will be of interest to evolutionary biologists.

Bioenergetic Processes of Cyanobacteria by Guenter A. Peschek,Christian Obinger,Gernot Renger Pdf

This publication is unique among a number of books on cyanobacteria because it focuses on the bioenergetics of these widespread organisms which are the evolutionary prerequisite for the development of all higher forms of life on our "blue" planet. The book primarily addresses questions of energy conversion by the fundamental bioenergetic processes: (oxygenic) photosynthesis, (aerobic) respiration, and (anaerobic) fermentation which uniquely occur together in these prokaryotic cells. Thermophilic cyanobacteria offer the most suitable material for high resolution structure analyses of Photosystem I and II and other electron transport complexes by X-ray crystallography (for example, at present the structure of Photosystem II at atomic resolution is only known for these organisms). These achievements during the last decade represent a milestone in our understanding of the complexes which are crucial for solar energy exploitation through photosynthetic water splitting. The present work represents an ambitious attempt to achieve the goal of a synoptic state-of-the-art picture by casting together the mosaics of detailed knowledge described by leading experts in the field. It contains 24 chapters written by 35 authors from Europe, USA, India and Japan. The book is aimed at reaching a broad audience ranging from students to experienced scientists. The editors wish all readers a pleasant and stimulating journey through the fascinating “world” of the bioenergetics of cyanobacteria and sincerely hope that this book will not only be of great value for the experts but also entice young people into this exciting research area with the aim to address successfully the challenging problems of high relevance that are still waiting for a satisfactory answer.

Bioenergetics by Peter Gräber,Giulio Milazzo Pdf

Bioenergetics, the topic of volume 5 of this Series, is concerned with the energetics, the kinetics, and the mechanisms of energy conversion in biological systems. This phenomenon can be investigated on diffeƯ rent levels of complexity. On a global level the role of biological proƯ cesses for the steady state of our environment is considered. At the physiological level, the relation between energy input and the physioloƯ gical state of an organism is of interest, while at the cellular level the biochemical pathways for degradation and synthesis of all relevant substrates is investigated. At present the majority of bioenergetic stuƯ dies pertain to the molecular level. The processes in a cell are catalyƯ zed by a large number of proteins called enzymes. The enzymes inƯ volved in energy transduction can be considered as molecular maƯ chines which transform energy from one form into another, or transfer energy from one process to another. Living systems operate far from equilibrium and are open in the therƯ modynamic sense, i. e. they exchange energy and matter with the surƯ roundings. Chapter 1 presents the principles of non equilibrium thermoƯ dynamics applied to biological systems. About 0. 05% of the energy from the sunlight which reaches the surface of the earth is used by plants and algae as well as some bacteria to synthesize organic comƯ pounds, and thus supplies all organisms with the energy necessary for life.

Bioenergetics by Davor Juretic Pdf

Bioenergetics deals with the very first energy transformation steps performed by living cells. Increased dissipation is the primary effect of processing external energy packages. Enzyme-supported charge separation is the minor but essential outcome for maintaining life. This book explores the usefulness of dissecting the entropy production of enzymes involved in cellular defenses, fermentation, respiration, and photosynthesis, assuming that tightly regulated dissipation is the hallmark of life. Researchers, educators, and students of life sciences can find in this text many examples of how we can use the interdisciplinary approach to study cells' virtuoso ability to connect the microscopic to the macroscopic world. Each chapter is a self-contained unit with a glossary and selected references for further reading.

Physics of Bioenergetic Processes by L. A. Blumenfeld Pdf

According to its definition, synergetics is concerned with the cooperation of indi vidual parts of a system that produces macroscopic temporal, spatial or functional structures. A good deal of the volumes published within this series dealt with the formation of truly macroscopic structures which we can s. ee with our eyes. A common scheme could be developed to understand the formation of many patterns through self-organization. In particular, we have to use concepts which go beyond conventio nal thermodynamics. New ideas became crucial. We have to study kinetic processes, and often few highly excited degrees of freedom play the decisive role in the evo lution of structures. Over the past years it has turned out that quite similar lines of approach apply to a world which at first sight would be classified as "microsco pic". That world consists of processes in which biomolecules are involved. An impor tant example for the problems occurring there is provided by Manfred Eigen's theory of evolution of life at the molecular level (cf. his contribution to Volume 17 of this series). Another important example has been provided by Blumenfeld's book on problems of biological physics (Vol. 7 of this series). There it was proposed to treat biological molecules as machines which, in a certain sense, work through "macros copic" degrees of freedom.

Principles of Bioenergetics by Vladimir P. Skulachev,Alexander V. Bogachev,Felix O. Kasparinsky Pdf

Principles of Bioenergetics summarizes one of the quickly growing branches of modern biochemistry. Bioenergetics concerns energy transductions occurring in living systems and this book pays special attention to molecular mechanisms of these processes. The main subject of the book is the "energy coupling membrane" which refers to inner membranes of intracellular organelles, for example, mitochondria and chloroplasts. Cellular cytoplasmic membranes where respiratory and photosynthetic energy transducers, as well as ion-transporting ATP-synthases (ATPases) are also part of this membrane. Significant attention is paid to the alternative function of mitochondria as generators of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that mediate programmed death of cells (apoptosis and necrosis) and organisms (phenoptosis). The latter process is considered as a key mechanism of aging which may be suppressed by mitochondria-targeted antioxidants.

Mitochondria and Anaerobic Energy Metabolism in Eukaryotes by William F. Martin,Aloysius G. M. Tielens,Marek Mentel Pdf

Mitochondria are sometimes called the powerhouses of eukaryotic cells, because mitochondria are the site of ATP synthesis in the cell. ATP is the universal energy currency, it provides the power that runs all other life processes. Humans need oxygen to survive because of ATP synthesis in mitochondria. The sugars from our diet are converted to carbon dioxide in mitochondria in a process that requires oxygen. Just like a fire needs oxygen to burn, our mitochondria need oxygen to make ATP. From textbooks and popular literature one can easily get the impression that all mitochondria require oxygen. But that is not the case. There are many groups of organismsm known that make ATP in mitochondria without the help of oxygen. They have preserved biochemical relicts from the early evolution of eukaryotic cells, which took place during times in Earth history when there was hardly any oxygen avaiable, certainly not enough to breathe. How the anaerobic forms of mitochondria work, in which organisms they occur, and how the eukaryotic anaerobes that possess them fit into the larger picture of rising atmospheric oxygen during Earth history are the topic of this book.
